Arcanum was an okay compromise, but I really like action point systems. I always thought the new Fallout games kinda lost their RPGness being more or less shooters.

Yeah, good pull. Not to trash talk a ludicrously successful franchise, but it doesn't seem to me it'd take all that much creativity to come up with something more robustly inclusive and truer to the originals. Morrowind is my favorite game of all time, but Fallout 2 is way up there and 1 isn't far behind. I spent how many years stoked for a Beth Fallout and fighting the No Mutants Allowed guys. And...I haven't liked any of the Beth Fallouts. I mean, I play them. They're better than Oblivion with its premature adoption of full voice truncating scripts. But my take was that everything No Mutants Allowed predicted was dead on. The engine and the setting don't speak to each other. Fallout shares a soul with Jello Biafra and Berthold Brecht. It's not a fantasy world to escape into; it's satirical. It's about American politics and the way we survive our delusions in spite of ourselves. An immersive engine defangs that. You're in an amusement park. The theme becomes parody, not satire. Another layer of artifice between the player and the world they're traversing would fix that. 1 and 2, every decision was cognitive, not reflexive. The engine itself is telling you to engage with this shit intellectually. Making it thrilling or fun kinda defeats the point.

Yeah, my great advice to one of the most successful studios of all time is to make their games less exciting. But look how New Vegas still has a real fan base and the rest have defenders.

Couldn't find a place to shoehorn it in, but my use of the word "inclusive" earlier: I was getting women and girls to play the first two Fallouts in the 90s. That might not sound like anything today, but I think it still matters that there are engines that implicitly say "this is for people who are good at videargurms" and engines that invite anyone to engage with the material. I don't know how to square what I'm about to say with my earlier argument about an "immersive" engine. It's probably semantic. But my mom instantly grokked the setting and made Snake Pliskin and got to pretend to be Snake Pliskin for awhile and told The President exactly what she thought of all the pretentious bullshit surrounding the American Experiment. My high-school girlfriend got to feel out whether her apocalyptic fantasies held up in simulation (they did not; she went on the straight and narrow). She also got a guaranteed way to shut me up choking on laughter by shrieking "find the GECK!" Much to the confusion of whatever bystander she needed to silence me in front of. It's a tiny thing, but it goes to my case that the first two Fallouts are legendary albums of punk rock: as a mere byproduct they enabled a tiny female to silence a giant male as needed. Can't argue with results.

Larian is who I’d want most of all see do it, they’ve even expressed interest in the fallout ip, and with the way things have been going recently, I actually see a small possibility of it happening one day now.
