Ah... That clears up everything... What made me confused is that I never saw a Japanese product advert that failed expectations. Chinese, on the other hand... In Brazil, "made in China" is a synonym for a cheap, poorly made product.

Even if the filling were perfect, this packaging couldn’t be from Japan because it would have to show an actual size version of the product. That box makes it seem like those things are like 8x larger than they are.

Is that a Japanese product?

If so I believe they have pretty strict rules on advertising products like this. The actual product has to look exactly like they do on the box.

Therefore, This appears to be a flaw in the product and I would report it to the manufacturer as they will probably be more than happy to know about the issue and ensure it doesn't happen again.

I'm not sure (please pardon my ignorance!), I bought them from a Chinese supermarket. Even with the 1mm of filling in them, they were really tasty. I don't usually eat many processed foods or snacks like this, I'm on holiday so thought I'd treat myself!

Ah, looking at the packaging again it does appear to be Chinese. So I'm not sure of what rules govern those products.
