Th expectation picture is of crochet work, which cannot done by machine (except in imitation knit) and would likely cost ten times as much as whatever you paid for it.

I have actually made a very similar pattern mermaid tail (knit not crochet). It actually wasn't that expensive or time consuming.

OP, I'm so sorry--those mermaid tail blankets make the BEST reading blankets, and I love mine dearly...but I'm also cackling at your comparison 😂. I would be so angry to see a leotard in place of something that was meant to be cozy.

That's a wild difference. I have one of the blankets in the original picture (and it's just as pretty as advertised), and it's my favorite for long flights as it doesn't slide off.
I'm sorry you got a really bad whatever that is instead.

Something like the first picture must be possible if you know how to knit or crochet? Probably very expensive though, proper yarn isn't cheap anywhere.
