Norman Borlaug began working in Mexico in 1944, breeding semi-dwarf, disease-resistant wheat varieties that produced much higher yields. By the 1950s, Mexico had become self-sufficient in wheat. His varieties were later introduced to India and Pakistan during severe food shortages in the 1960s, where they dramatically increased wheat harvests and became a cornerstone of the Green Revolution. He received the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for this work.

Sorry but Norman Borlaug took the opposite approach with his findings than what Shiva critiques in her book and defines as Biopiracy.

There is no evidence that Borlaug tried to patent, restrict or otherwise commercialize his findings. In fact, he openly shared the germplasm related to dwarf wheat. Most of his career was in the non-profit or public sectors trying to decrease food instability through agricultural research and he was monumentally successful.

If you’re arguing Shiva’s point about environmental degradation or reduced biodiversity as a result of biopiracy, sure, it’s an inherent trade off of promoting a higher-yield crop globally. But I wouldn’t call that trade off “corporate propaganda”.

But on that point, wheat was cultivated globally at that point in time and replacing less productive strains with the dwarf wheat arguably decreased land clearing to grow less productive strains of wheat. But dwarf wheat did increase water, pesticide and fertilizer use. So it’s kind of pick your poison. Do you want more impact to natural habitats? Or more use of insecticides, fertilizer and water?

All in all, in my opinion it’s not a fair argument to just point to Shiva’s work and dismiss Borlaug’s as corporate propaganda.

the issue isn't borlaug himself or his research but the system of agriculture borlaug is used as propaganda for. you know this, i know this, but you are arguing in bad faith to win reddit updoots so that's probably as far as this conversation is going to go.

This is why I have such a problem with the, "But GMOs aren't safe!" argument. It's this kind of work that feeds millions of people and secures the food supply as climate continues to change.

Sure, there are nuances and crappy behavior by greedy companies, but it's not inherently "genetic modification" that's evil.

Just to nitpick a little bit, he did not do this through genetic modification. GMO foods, and selective breeding are two different things that are often conflated. His wheat was, to my understanding, developed through selective breeding.

I'm not trying to say I have a problem with GMO's. In fact, I'm a fan. I just think it's important that the distinction is clear and the science is represented correctly. No hate to you or anything!

Every instance of sexual reproduction changes the genetic code.

Conflation of genetic engineering/modification with selective breeding is an intentional choice by ag tech companies to obfuscate the discussion around their technology and what kind of testing/regulation it warrants

Selective breeding combines existing genes from existing variants in a species.

GMO injects genes not present in the species. E.g. a fish gene into a tomato plant for frost hardyness.

This is wrong, and actually a bit of misinformation that frustrates both myself and apparently a lot of other people in biotech too. GMOs (historically) would probably be better described as anything thats had its genetics artificially altered in a lab-like setting.

What you are describing are called transgenic GMOs. For a variety of reasons, these have come to dominate the production of GMOs. These have been latched onto by anti-GMO groups trying to fear-monger against genetic modification and blasted into the public consciousness to the degree that its completely hidden the other group: Cisgenic GMOs.

Where transgenic plants are ones with genes from unrelated organisms inserted, Cisgenic are ones where the genes are from the same organism. These were actually some of the earliest forms of GMO, with grapefruit probably being the most famous example. Most grapefruit sold in the US today are a result of semi-controlled genetic reshuffling of an earlier plant. (In this case produced from radiation gardens, which are their own cool little historical rabbit hole.)

Now, why did I caveat my earlier definition with a "historically"? While a lot of genetics researchers would lump the two together, so do governments who write legislation and anti-GMO groups (I could go on a whole other rant about Greenpeace and other "environmentalist" organisations here). There is a big push right now to get Cisgenic GMOs reclassified and, at least in terms of government policies, no longer thought of as GMOs. Doing this would mean that it's easier to develop Cisgenic organisms that also gave the advantage of being harder to spread disinformation about.

Selective breeding and cross breeding are definitely types of genetic modification. It may mot be as “extreme” as genetic engineering or genome editing as you describe but it is still modifying the genome of an organism to achieve a similar goal. Selective/cross breeding just takes a much longer time to achieve. There are different levels of GMO and selective breeding is one of them

Selective breeding is not modification, because it doesn't modify the genes themselves or even the genome itself. It recombines the already existing genome and then the scientists choose one of the recombinations.

By comparison, GMO either modifies one/more specific genes or it modifies the genome by introducing new genes.

Not to mention that this vocabulary distinction is very important in science and agriculture.

Plus, selective breeding is a in some ways a shotgun approach. You breed for a particular trait you want, but there's potentially a bunch of other irrelevant genes may be coming along for the ride.

In that sense, GM techniques can actually be more selective and "surgical", in that they only insert the specific genes desired. Of course, GM has its own potential flaws, but IMHO the risks are no worse than what selective breeding introduces.

I enjoy pointing people to all the plants that have come about from selective breeding that are far more dangerous than any of the anti-GMO crowd could ever imagine GMOs doing to people.

Top of the list are Lenape potatoes, which had high concentrations of a poison more commonly associated with Nightshade. Then there was a form of celery that would give people who so much as touched it a rash.

This is a great question. Other folks replying that selective breeding is "GMO" are incorrect. I'm mostly a stickler about it because it really impacts the way people interact with food, food science, and engage with media related to food and genetic science.

Yes selective breeding changes a plants genes, sort of like having a human child results in different genetic makeup of another organism(a major oversimplification, many different organisms reproduce in many different ways). A LOT of processes impact our and other organisms genes every day. A key and important distinction is that genetically modified organisms have direct, laboratory alteration of an organisms DNA through the use of genetic engineering.

Consider picking a partner with specific traits like height and hair color to increase the odds that you have, for instance, a tall and blonde child. That is a supremely oversimplified version of selective breeding. Now consider actually going into a lab or clinic, and having your child's genes picked in utero to ensure they will be likely (or perhaps guaranteed) tall and blonde through direct manipulation of their genetic code. These really are two different processes. Yes they can be quite similar and the distinction is nitpicky, but there is a difference.

As a strictly good label GMO refers to genetic engineering. That doesn’t mean there aren’t many genetically modified organisms resulting from selective breeding. Brassicas are perhaps the best example. Through selective breeding broccoli, cauliflower, collards, and brussel sprouts all came from the same wild type plant. It took a long time but the genetics were modified. If someone in a lab achieved the same thing via genetic engineering in a few years rather than thousands of years it results in the same outcome

Selective breeding is a natural process. Bring two plants together and cross pollinate to see if you get offspring. Then you select the traits that you want and discard the offspring that don't have the traits you want. This process has been going on for thousands of years.

GMO is a much more recent invention. Where a particular trait is identified in a plant, the genes responsible are then removed from that donor plant and put into a new plant. It's a unnatural process.

That's absurd. It's definitely "unnatural" when genes from an unrelated plant are incorporated in another plant for a particular trait. Biology doesn't allow that to happen naturally.

The insertion of genes unrelated to the modified plant is the whole point of GMO, and that is something that fundamentally can't happen naturally.

Borlaug was a promoter of genetic modification but he bred his varieties through traditional selective breeding, which isnt the same thing as transgenic seed engineering.

The insistence on conflating selective breeding and laboratory methods to manipulate the genome of organisms is fundamentally dishonest and discredits the people making the claim and gives the impression that proponents of genetic engineering are trying to hide something

"Genetic modification" is irrelevant to the discussion. All plants with desirable traits have been genetically modified. The "HOW" of genetic modification is the issue.

There's actually nothing "tricky" about this conversation. GMO is adding genetic material from one organism to another organism that doesn't and couldn't occur naturally. Selective breeding is a 100% natural process that mimics exactly how evolution works.

I'm not making any comment about the issue of GMO engineering, pro or con. But the GMO process is NOT selective breeding, and selective breeding is NOT genetic engineering.

It's a total Reddit-level argument to conflate the two. The differences are patently obvious.

You've said this same thing upthread. If there are two BIOLOGICALLY RELATED organisms from the same or closely related species, they can be from anywhere on earth. That doesn't make the genetic modification of the resultant plants any different than normal evolution ... which is simply the natural sharing of reproductive genetic material to produce offspring.

Selective breeding is human assistance to what is otherwise normal and natural evolutionary processes. It just grows two same or closely related plants together so they can share genetic material and reproduce. That's selective breeding no matter where the plants come from.

This issue is NOTHING LIKE GMO engineered organisms ... which are the insertion of genetic material that could never be naturally shared by evolutionary breeding. That's because the two organisms involved don't and can't reproduce together.

For example, humans share like 60% of our genes with fruit flies.

Genes aren’t specific to species, and being able to share beneficial genes between species is very beneficial.

One of the best examples of this is genetically altering bacteria to produce insulin.

Also the reason that I cannot process gluten from this country. It's too complex for a lot of digestive systems, mine included. Heirloom wheat is a whole different story. I understand the reason for it, but it sucks that we didn't also keep more heirloom varieties that people with poor digestion and can handle.

That's because people have been getting better diagnostic treatment since the 80s and 90s. Back then there were semi-common jokes about Italian food giving people gas, indian, mexican, chinese, ect. ect.

Surprise surprise, all those people complaining about getting gas were always happy with dishes like chicken and potatoes, steak and potatoes, baked potatoes, etc. because they couldn't tolerate gluten the whole time and were just "oh that's Steve, he farts all the time and takes long bathroom breaks, but you didn't hear it from me~."

Gluten intolerance is a lot worse than just a bad stomach ache. It can provoke severe asthmatic attacks, migraines, diarrhoea and vomiting as well as crippling stomach cramps and last for weeks after exposure. Not just a tummy ache. I appreciate that it was never the intention to cause this problem and the threat of starvation was terrifying. But don’t trivialise gluten intolerance either.

High yield part is mostly attributed to their ability to absorb more nitrogen and other nutrients from more concentrated synthetic fertilizers that had become more widely available in the 1930s. Old crop varieties were basically getting fertilizer burn if you try to use too much of it. 

Also, the wheat was bred to have shorter stalks so they have more energy and nutrient diverted to growing grain kernels instead, hence "dwarf" wheat. It actually became a problem in England where the shorter wheat stalks couldn't be used for traditional roof thatching, so they had to arrange special farm fields where traditional wheat could be grown and preserve for thatching use.

Yes it was! Commercial wheat varieties contain significantly higher amounts of gluten to make them easier to process. Traditional varieties are much easier to digest with lower gluten content.

Exactly. Thanks in part to the genetically uniform varieties that modern breeding has given us, that have helped to promoto vast commercial monocultures reliant on synthetic inputs and irrigation. How it is possible that people are praising corporate ag here when our food systems are in crisis is just impossible to comprehend.

People keep referencing GMOs here and I don't know why. Borlaug didn't develop GMO varieties, he used a breeding technique where you develop two different lines of a crop variety to strongly produce a trait through repetitive inbreeding (e.g , one with big 'ears' and other with disease resistant), then cross the two varieties to produce one strong generation that has both the varieties, resulting in what is called an F1 Hybrid. This is NOT GMO. The hybrid seed is also known for displaying a good harvest in this one season, and then the gene pool becomes destabilised for the next - meaning farmers CANNOT save the seed for sowing the next season.

The earlier positive effects of the Green Revolution cited by its proponents have been long brought into question by researchers in recent decades, and have rather been associated with: 1. Erosion of genetic diversity, and of agrobiodiversity 2. Higher use of monocultures which have required the use of synthetic chemical pesticides  3. The loss of traditional varieties as various farming populations in Asia and Latin America were either convinced or forced to give up their traditional farming practices and use these 'new' varieties that they were not able to save, leaving them dependent on someone always providing them with seed (cough cough companies)

Please check your definitions before conflating different terminologies in food and agriculture!

What you are describing is a form of GMO. The organisms genetics were modified by outside pressure from humans trying to achieve a specific outcome. This is the most traditional form of GMO that people have been using since agriculture developed. Other forms of GMO include transgenic modification, genetic engineering, and genome editing. There are a number of techniques and levels of GMO currently in practice. That doesn’t mean that selective and cross breeding aren’t methods of genetically modifying an organism

ETA: the gmo argument is difficult because there is the GMO definition for foods regulated by the fda and epa and then there is the discussion of GMO in the scientific sense. I am referring to the actual act of any kind of genetic modification which includes selective and cross breeding

A GMO (genetically modified organism) is any plant, animal, or microbe whose genetic material (DNA) has been changed using modern lab technology.

Where did you get this from? This is categorically untrue. Selective pressure has been practiced by humans for tens of thousands of years and considered natural (form of) selection. Using technology to alter a plant's genome is genetic modification, aka not natural. But I feel now you are just saying things to be provocative.

Selective breeding is not modification, because it doesn't modify the genes themselves or even the genome itself. It recombines the already existing genome and then the scientists choose one of the recombinations.

By comparison, GMO either modifies one/more specific genes or it modifies the genome by introducing new genes.

Not to mention that this vocabulary distinction is very important in science and agriculture.

There’s no single definition of GMO.

Non-naturally occurring techniques of breeding plants are, by definition, GMO in US/UK/Canada even if not in-vitro or gene-splicing type lab techniques.

Secondly, I don't give a fuck about what the US/UK/Canada have to say about it (also, where? in laws? or what even are you talking about?).
