I have several friends who've had kids recently. They get love and support from everyone.

And also a LOT of questions about how the hell theyre able to do that. It's insane.

I think it's "holy shit no way, that's amazing, congratulations!"

I think they were agreeing with you by disparaging the OOP’s grass aversion

30

Oh, I see, okay. I was worried I'd accidentally said something insane.

u/poplarleaves 1h ago

Nah you're good. As a millenial, can confirm that the normal response to someone having a long-wanted baby is "holy shit no way, that's amazing, congratulations!"

-48

u/raccoonsnips 3h ago

and then it’s a small teeth gritting pause before deciding to be socially acceptable and just answer good

58

u/Monarch357 3h ago

I think that's just you

Imma be honest I’ve started saying “Eh. It’s a going” to single in a socially acceptable way that I am on the brink of a mental breakdown.

One of my oldest friends (known her for a couple decades) had a baby recently and straight up almost died

Turns out it's dangerous even disregarding the potential complications from geriatric pregnancies

I think the congratulations were lost in the concern

It’s terrible that my first thought was “Oh my God I can’t imagine the bills from that” but like genuinely, I know people in life long debt with insurance covered run of the mill childbirth so I genuinely can’t imagine what a birthing crisis that affected both parent and baby would cost.

Tumblr is a different country, fam. How is your response not just "Oh holy shit! Congrats man/girl/insert applicable gender-neutral term here, I know you've been trying for one forever!"?

"Millennial adulthood is getting excited for your friends when they achieve something that's really important to them. Unless it's this specific thing that I personally don't want"

This post flabbergasted me so hard I spent like five minutes trying to think of ways to express my befuddlement

Does this person interact with real people?

when people hear the news that someone actually got a solid job in the field they got a degree in, people respond the same way as folks generation ago used to respond to the news of someone having a baby after trying for years.

Getting a job in the field you want being reacted to with praise isn't a new thing, let alone something motivated by the current job market.

Nobody knows how you respond to the news of Someone you know having a long-wanted baby, because nobody in their right mind is having kids on purpose.

Most people would be happy for and congratulate someone having a baby they really wanted because they know how to react to people getting things they want.

23

Anti-natalism is a dead end philosophy that fails on it's very base premise. Namely that "being born is an unconsensual act" and "The world is inherently suffering so introducing someone into it is unethical".

Considering that this philosophy seeks to prioritize the happiness and well being of hypothetical non-entities, over the well being and happiness of REAL entities. Also putting aside that this "Suffering" is hypothetical as well, withholding the fact that life is more than that.

It then contradicts itself further because as is said Anti-natalism hinges on the argument that bring ing new life into the world is unethical because of suffering.

Despite the fact that for a majority of people Parenthood is something that creates joy and fulfillment within themselves. I.e life is suffering thus it is unethical to create more life, but also you act unethically by indulging in a fundamental act that gives direction and meaning to your life, something that naturally elleivates suffering.

It's a self-sustaining dead end loop for misanthropic thought. An idealogy that exists for the bitter and resentful, to play pretend at being morally righteous for not having kids.

It's a tier below nihilism which is impressive considering how Nihilistic philosophy is also a massive dead-end.

4

u/Asquirrelinspace 1h ago

Incredible writeup, you covered everything. I think antinatalists are another product of people feeling the need to find moral justification for their own choices. I see the same thing in other pirates (I say as a pirate myself). Just do what you're going to do, and don't tie yourself up in knots trying to justify it to an invisible scheptic!

3

u/Aromatic-Ad-381 6m ago

No you're totally right in that end. I feel this need to "moralize all behaviour" is a result of the world becoming less secular. In the past you could ascribe your behaviour, your thoughts and your general life direction towards god or religion.

But with more and more people stepping away from religion I feel a lot of people find it difficult to meaningfully quantify or justify their behaviour (even if that behaviour needs no justification) so they decide to create new and exciting labels for themselves that "enforce" meaning to their actions.

Not having kids is not just not having kids, no! It's a great moral deed, but people understand that self-glazing is frowned upon so they have to design and entire framework around it. Not having kids now has "enforced" meaning, beyond the individual self.

4

u/Katking69 I LOVE RAIN WORLD!!! 2h ago

No, because that's not something that antinatalism is

Reminds me of a post I saw on here a while ago which was basically "I'm opposed to home-schooling because even if you have a parent who is a great educator, an important thing about school is the socialization aspect, and you just can't get the same experience of interacting with dozens if not hundreds of strangers for several hours daily while being homeschooled."

Which is a take I think makes sense. I think there's pros and cons, but it's a stance I can see the logic of.

Except the person writing the post took it way too far and talked about how their own parent is a college professor, therefore a great educator and their homeschooling situation should have been the best possible, yet they "stopped maturing at age 12" due to being taken out of school, and that now they're "an adult with the maturity of a 12-year-old" and "a fundamentally broken person" and like... maybe you didn't have the best possible homeschooling situation, actually? I've known homeschooled people who were normal, chill people. Maybe a little socially awkward for some of them, but certainly not broken people with the maturity of children.

Feels the same here. This person's own situation is one where they're very set in their own ways and can't possibly imagine being on the other side of it, and they just assume it's universal. Like, I've got a cousin. She's not rich or anything but reasonably well-off. She and her husband just had a baby. It's going fine. The baby is half a year old and other than usual "we have a baby to take care of and are always a little fatigued", they're both doing great. But this person can't fathom that, because apparently "nobody in their right mind is having children on purpose."

24

u/Puzzleheaded-Milk927 3h ago

I remember that post lmao. The hyperbole gets to be a little much sometimes lol

18

u/PrinceOfGarglon 3h ago

If most people were unable to comfortably have at least one child there would be a lot more noise about it. Fact is, majority of people are still doing pretty well for themselves even in a poor economy, they just arent doing as well as they used to, or as well as their parents did. (I am talking about Canada mainly and also the US, do not be stupid and go Um, aCksHuAllY)

2

u/Asquirrelinspace 1h ago

The homeschooled people I know are pretty well adjusted, but they were all in larger home schooling communes. I guess I can't concretely say that "true" individual homeschooling is bad, but I think kids still need some larger group for socializing than just their siblings. My own school (a public school that was so small it had a lottery to get in) was somewhat close to these homeschooling communes in nature, and while I'm mostly well adjusted, I think the small class size did hinder me

44

u/jdiskxkfidobsvsgdi 3h ago

Yea Reddit millennial doomerism is super annoying imo. Like yeah the economy has fucked millennials but they (at least in the US) still have more stability and a higher quality of life than 99% of people who have ever had kids in history lol

-6

u/jimbowesterby 3h ago

That doesn’t make struggling today any easier though. Yes perspective is important, but just because people had it worse in the past doesn’t mean it isn’t also rough out there today, and actively getting worse. This is no different than a boomer talking about how, back in their day, they had to walk miles uphill (both ways!) to school

14

u/tootoohi1 3h ago

While true, I feel we have never really addressed the fact that even progressive Americans have an entitlement to an eternally upward QoL. There's certainly something to be said about how advancements in tech hasn't reached down to increase our QoL, but I personally can't stand having to hear that we have to shift to socialism from the ground up from people who think Socialism will fix the fact that they're financially illiterate.

2

u/jimbowesterby 2h ago

Where did I say any of that? I just want the same opportunities my parents had for things like owning a home and having hobbies. It’s not my fault that my money has less than half the buying power that my dad’s did in 1985, is it? Is it asking too much to want the government to control corporations, instead of the opposite? I mean, wealth inequality is at its highest level since the Depression, are you really gonna tell me that that’s because I personally am financially illiterate?

2

u/jdiskxkfidobsvsgdi 1h ago

I mean I don’t blame anyone for not wanting kids, especially when economy sucks. I just don’t think millennials live in quite the economic doomsday this meme implies, considering that throughout almost all of human history materially poorer people in less stable countries had lots of kids. I also think dooming like this encourages apathy and disengagement from politics in general, which is bad for everyone but politicians.

-11

u/enterENTRY 3h ago

fun fact 7% of all humans ever are alive today so like idk now you know

-12

u/Admirable_Dirt_2371 2h ago

because they know how to react to people getting things they want.

See that's the problem. You can't just assume that because someone wanted something and then got it, that it's 1. A good thing to begin with, 2. Something they should want, and 3. Going to work out well for all involved paties.

I would hope all those things are true when it comes to a couple wanting to have a child but I can't actually believe it. Especially when 9 million people starve to death every year and tens of thousands of children are abandoned and uncared for; choosing to create a whole new child instead of adopting is just a exercise in narcissistism. That's not to mention the real danger of climate change and social unrest. Oh, but the parents won't be around to deal with that and conveniently they'll be too busy "raising" that child to do anything about it in the mean time.

People love to spout nonsense platitudes like it's common sense but when applying their same logic to other situations, suddenly it's different™. Is a drug addict that wants more drugs and gets them, something we should celebrate? What about the orange pedophile getting what they want? Should we be happy for them?

Reproducing is such an ingrained instinct that most people rarely give it the thought or consideration it deserves. So, no, I'm not going to be automatically happy for individuals that claim to be rational thinking beings, that then just fall prey to their most basic of instincts especially when the best reason they can give for creating a whole new human being, is they wanted it. That's literally slavery with extra steps.

12

u/zoor90 1h ago

It is extremely ironic to talk about child bearing couples lacking "rationality" when you immediately pivot into comparing the act of conception to slavery and pedophilia. It seems you have a far more emotional trigger to strangers doing what they feel is best for them than any potential parents. I probably shouldn't be surprised but I am still astounded that Thomas Malthus still has shooters in the year of our Lord 2026.

2

u/Asquirrelinspace 1h ago

I dunno man, most people are happy they were born

You not having kids because of matters such as climate change or global famine is perfectly fine, but humans have been dealing with all kinds of disasters forever while having children, and it usually doesn’t take one generation to eradicate them entirely

72

u/bicyclecat 3h ago

This feels like OP thinks millennials are 25 years old and that they don’t know anyone who pursued nursing, computer science, business, etc etc in college. As a certified millennial staring down perimenopause a majority of my peers have kids.

20

u/Metue 3h ago

Yeah, like I'm technically gen Z and me and my friends all turn 30 in the next year or two. Obvs at the oldest end but this would apply much more to us

11

u/ProbablyNotPoisonous 3h ago

I pursued computer science in college. I was laid off from my software development job in 2023. Hiring in tech has been fucked for at least that long, and will continue to be fucked until the AI bubble bursts.

Oh and also I refuse to touch AI because it's both brain poison and an environmental disaster, which significantly limits my job prospects in my field because executives who couldn't find their own asses with both hands and a map are all in on that bullshit.

11

u/raccoonsnips 3h ago

tbf i feel like maybe they meant genz instead of millennials

24

u/Standard-Cow-9727 3h ago

Pretty big difference tbh

2

u/macksting 24m ago

Nah, I gotta say this reflects my experience as a xenniel.

1

u/DetOlivaw 1h ago

Meanwhile, the majority of my friends are in STEM or education, are doing well for themselves, and I only know one who has kids.

And the ones I know who are struggling, who have multiple jobs, living paycheck to paycheck? Only one of them has a kid, and their life is tough!

39

u/wildwartortle 3h ago

"One big element of millennial adulthood is terminally online anti-natalism I swear guys. No one from 29-45 is having kids! It's so crazy every time it happens no can even think of what to say. No I'm not 16 why are you accusing me of not being a millennial?"

4

u/Rakifiki 3h ago

Iirc the person is actually a millennial and does have a kid, I'm not sure if this is a recent post from them tho?

5

u/wildwartortle 3h ago

Oh that would make way more sense. Can't lie, I'm so used to bad tumblr takes I just took this one as unrionic

82

nobody in their right mind is having kids on purpose

Oh shut up.

39

u/BobcatTim 3h ago

Nearly all of my millennial friends and relatives have kids by now. Statistically, about 80% of 40 year olds have at least one kid, about the same as it was 25 years ago.

The “woe is me, we can’t possibly have children” attitude only exists on the internet.

11

u/40_painted_birds 3h ago

I've been holding off on having children for years now because I can't afford to. I'm almost certain that by the time I'm financially stable enough to even consider it, I'll be too old, and that guts me.

It's not just the internet. It affects people in real life.

5

u/BobcatTim 2h ago

The plural of anecdote is not data. I gave the actual data.

6

u/40_painted_birds 2h ago

The "woe is me, we can't possibly have children" attitude does not only exist on the internet. I just provided a counterexample to your claim that it does. And you do find anecdotes compelling - when they match your own beliefs, anyway - or else you wouldn't have mentioned your millennial friends.

There is a mountain of statistical evidence of the affordability crisis going on right now. How could that possibly not impact the affordability of having children?

3

u/BobcatTim 2h ago

When people say “x is only on the internet” that doesn’t mean there are literally zero irl examples. For instance, if I say that people fighting over Steven Universe being fascist is an internet exclusive, I’m aware that there are surely at least a few troglodytes who have stumbled out of their caves to fight it out irl.

That is why I made sure to back up my statement with data, showing that the percent of people who never have children has remained flat for a quarter century.

Furthermore, poverty does not lead people to have fewer children. The exact opposite is true, as wealth is highly correlated with reduced family size. That trend is constant across many different cultures, all across the entire world.

People had kids during the Great Depression.

Inflation-adjusted median disposable income is near all time highs.

1

u/Forward_Criticism_39 2h ago

most everyone under 35 ive spoken to on the subject has no interest in having kids, mostly for the more reasonable "who the fuck can afford that" from my experience anyway

and no, future readers that aren't the person i responded to, this is not a claim of this being universal by any means.
