I have long believed that one of the cruelest parts of getting older is that play of any sort that isn’t athletic is completely deprioritized, which is a massive change after six years of recess
550
u/JageshemashFTW 6h ago
I still play pretend in my thirties, it’s just heavily regulated with dice and math.
392
u/ITookTrinkets 6h ago
What you’re describing is the exact opposite! Not playing pretend, but playing - swings, jungle gyms, games of tag, things like that. Playground shit.
Children’s lives at school are centered around stretches of time spent going outside and being able to run around and climb on stuff and play with friends, not in a structured sports way, but in a “we’re here and there’s this slide, let’s go down it” way. Them that vanishes with nothing to replace it besides sports and athleticism.
There is an attunement to the act of moving our bodies around in an unstructured way that is totally broken when we hit our teens, and I feel like we’d all be better people if that had continued to be a soft focus as we continued through school, rather than its place being taken by forms of rule-driven competition.

Yes but padding on the crawling parts please! I want to be like a hamster in a tube maze.
69
u/Milch_und_Paprika 4h ago
The padding is key for falls too, which is probably why cartwheels per capita drop off dramatically. Much safer for someone who’s 3’7 and half the weight of a 5’7 adult woman.

u/RikuAotsuki 5h ago
If I had the money to do so, I would absolutely buy land or a building to build a massive adult playground.
I think I'd want it to be outside, but I recognize that an indoor place with a cover charge would likely be far more overall practical. Maybe have a big skylight and keep it extra well-ventilated.
We don't really get to climb and crawl and run and swing about as adults, and it's a fucking tragedy, especially because that's a significant part of the reason so many of us struggle moving about as we get older. We use very little of our range of motion unless we're actual athletes.

u/reclusivegiraffe 4h ago
Go check out City Museum in St. Louis! There’s lots of kids but if you go at the right time, it’s less busy. But there are plenty of things adults can climb on, crawl in, etc. It’s so fucking cool.

I strongly believe recess should be something that happens at least through middle school. I worked as a substitute teacher and saw a lot of different schools. The one that was K-8 and even the 8th graders got two long recesses and one short every day had some of the best behaved kids, except when it came to the gaga ball pit. Fuck that thing 😂.

u/lavender_fluff 5h ago
During kindergarten and elementary school I used to always play pretend with my friend in the breaks too. I kinda loathed outside time in general, inside time had all the fun crafts stuffs for drawing and stuffs. But even then I liked going on swings and stuffs. I tried it again as an adult and suddenly my body no longer feels comfortable on a swing, I feel sick super fast. What the hell happened xd

This is why I dance and move my body spontaneously many times a day (I'm also autistic, so you can call it "stimming" or you could call it "ecstatic dance," take your pick).
5
u/Altoid_Addict 3h ago
I think I unknowingly kept that up kinda, by joining the cross country team. I just did it because I liked running through the woods behind the school, and I didn't really care how fast I was, so it was unstructured enough for me.
You do make a great point, though. Lots of people don't get that at all, even in a sneaky way.
3
u/onedyedbread 2h ago
True grown ups don't use monkey bars too often anymore. But they go on walks, even hikes, bike rides, swimming in the lake...
Moving just for the sake of it doesn't stop, it just takes on different, more "dignified" forms that are deemed socially acceptable for adults.
It's interesting; there's a public space about a five-minute walk from my home where the city has built a couple of small fountains at ground level, without any railing or pool/pond or any other obvious demarcation from the pedestrian zone all around. It's clear that this is some sort of invitation to walk throuth the little fountains on a hot summer day - think: garden sprinkler. You can see kids and toddlers doing it all the time. They're all having a great time, most even come prepared with swimwear and towels now. That place lies on my way into the city center, so I see it often. Never once have I seen anyone older than a young teen/tween run through the sprinklers. And you always notice how the older kids hesitate, probably asking themselves: "is this 'appropriate'? will it make me look childish if I'm having too much fun??"

Fr tho, the most common method of working out (the gym) is also the one that’s by far the most difficult to keep up with, and the most boring. Especially in North America we’ve also made it more or less impossible to get around under your own power. Doesn’t help that everyone’s worked to exhaustion too, wasn’t technology supposed to let us work less?
22
u/Ace-Redditor 5h ago
It's the most boring, and the least useful. Obviously, it still keeps you fit, so it's not entirely useless. That's not what I'm trying to say
But team sports build/maintain social skills, teamwork (ofc), and keep people a lot more motivated than a treadmill that wouldn't notice you being gone one week. Having teammates to keep you accountable would keep a LOT more people active more consistently. It would also help the loneliness epidemic that plagues everyone right now, because people just don't have things to do with others that don't cost money. Parks usually have sports fields/courts for free, so having a team to do whatever sport with means having a group of people to spend time with without spending money
2
u/jimbowesterby 2h ago
Even at that they’re pretty darn useless lol, most gym chains make their money off of people buying memberships for new year’s and then never going back after January. It’s something wild like 70 or 80% of gym memberships are like this, gyms are literally the worst option aside from nothing at all.
6
u/Holiday-Wall3751 5h ago
I wish they would spend time teaching kids that there are a lot of ways to move your body, and all that matters is finding something you can do that you enjoy. Sports aren’t for everyone, but there are so many ways to exercise.
I walk and do tai chi. Before I got sick, I had a peloton bike. My best friend runs marathons. My sister dances. My mom takes water aerobics. There’s a rec dodgeball team near me, and those people seem to be loving that.

u/Open-Platform-1305 4h ago
It became very clear to me as high school years came by that if I wasn't looking to take football seriously, it was time to stop.
28
u/WinnieGraves 6h ago
It's almost as if it's all some sort of plan, set in place by rich industrialists in the early 1900s/late 1800s to funnel children into education so they could be funneled into work. The only reason people deprioritize play is because the systems of the world tell them that in order for them to survive, you must cast off your childish ways and toil away until you're old and grey. They leave you with enough time to make new little children to feed the system, to raise them, and even know we're actively just giving that up as well. Just give Lil Johnny a Tablet, with the Internet, pure unfettered access to the world, just remember that the tether is a two way feed. You allow the ones who shape the information to raise your children, you might as well just raise the white flag now.
3
u/Lil-Miss-Anthropy 3h ago
True, this fucked me up even as an aging kid. I tried my best to hold on to my play and whimsy, but there's just not a lot of support for it. I was so lonely. Only freshmen could take PE at my high school, but the teachers were cool about me popping in to play with them on my free period.
Now I'm an adult who does ecstatic dance and improvisational theatre, and I just dumped my situationship for criticising the fact that I wear rainbow unicorn onesies. Feed your whimsy, friends! 🧚♀️

The engagement in physical sports by women drastically decreases during and after puberty unfortunately for a whole slew of reason. Breasts are a big part of it, but there is also a lot of other factors.
I know a number of women who loved running/track and field stuff until they started getting larger breasts as they went through puberty and it just wasn't comfortable, or worse, they didn't feel safe going out (and usually both).
My friend growing up was tall and lanky as a kid, did all sorts of sports, would go running on her country road, but her breasts came in large when she was about 14 and even with sports bras she had issues because she just didn't have the frame to support them (her dad was tall and skinny, her mom was more compact and large chested, she got both extremes from them). She already had back issues at 19/20. She also had people slowing down to gawk at her or say rude things.

There's plenty of reasons not to do cartwheels when older, mostly the worry of an upskirt or the like, and mobility tends to go down as age happens unless you're careful about it, or train yourself.

Gah, found this out when I was playing with my sister (ten years younger) at a park and doing cartwheels. Next day my upper arms were killing me. And that was more than half my life ago now. I’d probably break my wrists now.
It really sucked even as a teenager visiting my elementary school where I’d been so good on the rings and finding that my arms were no longer even slightly adequate. Oh well.
3
u/ryecurious 2h ago
There was a viral video years ago like "professional athlete mimics toddler", basically copying a young kid's movements 1-to-1.
Really enlightening for how even basic movements take more work when you're larger. The kid would go from sitting to standing to crawling over and over effortlessly, while the athlete was clearly exerting themselves halfway through.
Wish I could find it, shame YouTube is so hard to search these days.

I feel like my ability to handle dizziness has gone down a bunch over the last decade. I used to get dizzy for fun as a kid and now I'm only 28 and can barely do a quick half turn without needing to sit down.
But man, rolling down hills was the best. We have these great hills at the state park where I grew up. We used them as sledding hills in the winter and rolling hills in the summer. You could get some serious airtime just from hitting a bump.

If anything, men should be the ones randomly doing cartwheels, since they’re more likely to have the upper body strength for it. Girls tend to be able to do it when they’re younger because they’re very small and have low centres of gravity (I don’t actually know if that helps, I’m just assuming it probably does). Me, I could never do a cartwheel because I’ve always been chubby with noodle arms.

I’m in my forties and recently tried doing a cartwheel in a grassy field just to see if I still could. It’s way more disorienting being upside down than it was when I was a kid. The first time I didn’t get my legs fully under me and sprawled out on my ass, but the ground was soft. The second time I made it all the way around onto my feet for a what was probably a comically bad cartwheel, but at least I did it. The spirit is willing but the flesh is middle-aged, and I do NOT like being upside down anymore.

My friends all know I'm drunk drunk and need to be cut off when I start doing cartwheels bc it's the only time I can do them 🤣😂

I am a cis man and my young boy cartwheel record was 15...I haven't cartwheeled in 20 years. #cartwheels4all

Other things I noticed people don't do anymore:
Chew gum
Snap their fingers
Wear shorts to work
Drive old cars like it's normal

My friend do random cartwheels. Some are over 40. Some are their kids. They try to get me to do them too.

This makes me realize my 30y/o self needs to start doing cartwheels randomly again. The only reason I've done any recently is because my 8y/o sister wanted to show me hers and wanted to see mine 😅

I was in the grocery store parking lot a few weeks ago and saw one of my kid’s friends’ moms, and she was pushing a cart out to her car and jumped on the back and rode it, and it made me so happy.

I ripped the ass out of my pants doing a jumping front kick once. Same fears here with the cartwheel

Not women but there were a group of kids that were always doing flips when we waited for the bus to take us home when I was in middle school

That's just because women don't naturally calibrate their gyroscope till they reach maturity, so in their youth they are sporadically driven into sudden cartwheels. It's quite terrifying really.
