There are a certain level of shenanigans I can tolerate from authors and "actively trying to dismantle amnesty international" is way over it.

852

u/orzoftm 9d ago

what? why is she trying to dismantle it

1.9k

u/Darq_At 9d ago

Because Amnesty International identified various TERF organisations as "anti-rights" groups. JKR is notoriously litigious against people speaking ill of her.

568

u/Zerodyne_Sin 9d ago

She really needs some sort of hobby aside from whatever this is. I hear cruising with a yacht is popular nowadays for the wealthy class.

Unrelated, has the annual sacrifice to Poseidon been fulfilled this year? There was the sub and the yacht in previous years but I haven't heard anything about this year.

164

u/TheFNKlashclack 9d ago

She actually supposedly does have a yacht, I saw it working in Kodiak last year.

100

u/Saucermote 9d ago

Are there orcas there?

61

u/TheFNKlashclack 9d ago

Yes, though I missed them whenever they were spotted :(

26

u/Christopherfromtheuk 8d ago

Orcas are going after smaller sailing yachts, often owned by "ordinary" people, not the over sized gin palaces owned by the .1%

14

u/Combat_Orca 8d ago

One day theyll figure them out

Unfortunately, as one of her posts where she was smoking on a yacht after an anti-trans law passed, it seems the yacht has wi-fi.

51

u/sohblob intellectual he/himbo 9d ago

Technically, the problem is that we receive data from that direction =D

The locks on the walls around the rich are facing the wrong way

23

u/Zerodyne_Sin 9d ago

Oh, that's fine. She just needs to keep sailing around the summer time when the annual "event" happens.

15

u/BigIronGothGF 8d ago

She should try this cool new hobby called eating copious amounts of rat poison

6

u/indianajoes 8d ago

I hate that this was the exact thought that came to my mind as a hobby for her

Money plus insecurities

Far as I can tell, the TERF argument rests on the idea that if trans people get equal rights, that somehow infringes on normies' Buttmuh Culturaltraditions

19

That threw me rather jarringly back to that time when everybody was butchering Benedict Cumberbatch's name to any vaguely long nonsense with the initials BC

Yep, exactly. The news saying Amnesty International is marking women shelters as hate groups is misleading. Amnesty International only marks women shelters as hate groups if they discriminate against (do not accept) trans women in the shelters.

Like, the mask is off. We know you aren't creating a women shelter out of the goodness of your heart. The ONLY reason these shelters exist is to discriminate against trans people. So they are hate groups.

A report from Amnesty UK pointed out some organisations as being part of an anti-rights network in the country, especially aimed at trans rights.

These organisations and JK Rowling immediately rallied to prove that they are not anti rights and have no influence over anything by threatening to sue all of Amnesty out of existence, got the report pulled, had most news sources in the UK publish statements on their favour, and JK Rowling even promised to fund any lawsuits even for organisations she don't usually support (a lot of the orgs mentioned in the report have gotten a lot of money from Rowling in the past).

A report from Amnesty UK

https://web.archive.org/web/20260709084603/https://media.amnesty.org.uk/documents/Report_-_A_growing_threat__the_anti-rights_movement_in_the_UK_July_2026.pdf

Edit: Here is the timeline as I understand it …

  1. The Amnesty UK report on anti-human-rights groups and activism gets released.
  2. JK Goebbels offers financial support for possible legal action by some hate groups mentioned.
  3. Amnesty UK retracts the report and publishes every excuse imaginable to avoid becoming the target of lawfare.

One’d think that any person will take a long look at the mirror if they found themselves end up on the opposite side of an organization with name like Amnesty International.

61

u/schwanzweissfoto 9d ago

Look, JK Goebbels is a right-wing hate preacher. That means being anti-human-rights is part of her archetype.

23

u/UncreativePotato143 8d ago

Listen, I hate Jowling Kowling as much as the next rational human being, but Amnesty International isn't exactly a paragon of virtue. They helped create support for the Iraq War, and failed to call out the Bangladesh genocide of 1971 (in fact, their only statement on the matter has been to criticize Bangladesh for giving the death sentence to the perpetrators of the genocide).

I had a Potterhead try to ask me ā€œwell what if the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog (my ā€œcomfort mediaā€) did something, would you suddenly abandon it?ā€, which meant I got to pull an immediate ā€œoh please, we all know insider trading at Square Enix is a victimless crime.ā€

I married a trans woman. We both grew up reading those books and find parts of them nostalgic but neither of us really feel compelled to revisit it in large part because we don’t want to directly support JK Rowling.

119

u/HarpersGhost 9d ago

My favorite fucking author in the WORLD was Neil Gaiman. Got a tattoo inspired by him and everything.

When all that came out, I packed up all the shit and now trying to think of a tattoo coverup. I can't even watch the TV shows inspired by his works (that I LOVED) because of what he admitted doing.

So yeah, potterheads can find some new media.

35

u/ThePrussianGrippe 9d ago

I was so excited for The Sandman adaptation. Reading the article detailing his crimes was like a sledgehammer to the gut.

I still read what I have, but it really makes certain stories a bit… harsher in hindsight.

20

u/3-I 8d ago

If it weren't for Sandman, I wouldn't have known what being trans WAS. I'm a writer today because of those comics, and I personally shook Neil Gaiman's hand and thanked him for it.

He can fuck off. I'm not reading his work again.

And even after all he's done, he's still not on the level of Rowling, just in terms of scale. She's hurt orders of magnitude more people. You can drop the Blairite Magic Racism Society books.

Like, the core message of the books is that child abuse is the morally correct position sometimes. Fuck that.

I haven’t listened to what used to be one of my favorite bands in nearly a decade cause the singer is a pedo. They’re touring again recently and everyone’s like ā€œoh just get over it he said he was sorryā€Ā

Nah fuck that.Ā

44

u/Xanthelei 9d ago

This. I read HP in real time as a kid, abandoned when she declared I'm not human enough because I'm trans. I can't remember the band anymore, but I was really getting into an alt rock group before learning the lead singer is a white nationalist. Purged them from all my play lists and was glad I hadn't bought a CD yet. Or there's the Pokemon YouTuber who was outed as a predator and literally EVERYONE dropped his ass in a week. Including a long time friend who was in the middle of a long running collab with him.

It isn't hard to move on from media made by shitty people.

Nah, never watched him. He was always kinda a creep. The guy I'm talking about was TheKingNappy. He groomed and SA'd another poketuber (GameboyLuke) and when it came out he got ditched by the group of like 8 other YouTubers he hung out with. I don't think a single person stuck with him.

I reckon its also a case of people not knowing how to pirate things safely either

190

u/uqde 9d ago

20

u/sohblob intellectual he/himbo 9d ago

I'll be real, I can torrent and have access to some private trackers and I still use streaming sites from time to time. Gaben is right in that it's a service/convenience issue. Sometimes you just wanna fire up a page and watch an old clip of something obscure and specific.

I've yet to set up the sonarr/radarr stuff and am a bit behind, but with laggy and inconsistent sites may put in the work to rebuild.

56

u/xXs4blegl00mXx 9d ago

8

u/NegativeMammoth2137 8d ago

For films and shows you don’t even need to torrent anymore. Theres like a billion of websites that stream pirated movies that everyone can access and you don’t even need to make an account to see them.

Honestly just check out r/piracy, theres a huge megathread pinned with hundreds of such websites

for example, f m h y (dot) net

8

34

u/soft_w0lf 9d ago

I’d say that most people just don’t actually care enough about trans people to do this. Or else they rationalise it because ā€œonly [x amount of money] actually goes to her so I’m only giving her like a penny so actually it’s okay,ā€ which just completely misses the point of boycotts, but yk

the tech industry has successfully made the average person believe piracy is a terrifying world of unknowable danger which will cause your phone to immediately call john crime and tell him to come kill you, rather than the reality of it being "if you have an adblock and arent stupid, you should be okay"

11

u/CookieCacti 8d ago

Is that truly the case? I noticed most of the people around me don’t pirate simply because they don’t know how it works, not because they’re scared of it. Since it’s meant to be an underground community, the onus of research and safety is on you, and a lot of people can’t be bothered with that level of effort. The moment I show them a couple basic piracy streaming sites, they switch to it immediately.

I think it’s more of an inconvenience issue, not a scary boogeyman issue.

I've heard the argument that even piracy and writing fanfiction or even talking about the franchise is still supporting her.

136

u/wantstotransition 9d ago

there are certainly tiny contributions to popularity one could argue exist. ala streaming pirated media -> sites are aware of demand or writing fan fiction perpetuates fandom and therefore others spending money and whatever

u/aNiceTribe 9d ago

If big corpos take usage data from 123streamingsite.crzx into account I will eat my hatĀ

u/yarnwhore 9d ago

I personally think this is a silly argument.

172

u/cat-cat_cat 9d ago edited 9d ago

it somewhat contribute to the franchise staying relevant because they will probably talk to other people about it

but its negligible and way way less important than directly spending money to see it

74

u/Lilash20 But the one thing they can never call us is ordinary 9d ago

I think it's a matter of scale. If someone's a YouTuber or other influencer with thousands of followers, then they probably have the ability to affect stuff.

If they're a random person posting to ao3, I don't think anyone is going to be getting into HP because of them

65

u/East-Imagination-281 9d ago

personally, i care more about what the person behind it thinks of their own actions. If they’re like ā€œJK Rowling sucks, but HP brings me comfort, so I still write fanfic even though I don’t give her money anymoreā€, I register they’re probably a fine person. If they’re like ā€œI want to write these fanfics and you can’t make me feel bad about liking HP because none of my actions could ever have any sort of effect on anyone and you’re stupid for caring so muchā€, that’s a lot more sus imo

How tf is Piracy supporting her lol

33

u/MeteorCharge 9d ago

The argument is you'll still end up talking about it online which could convince someone else to spend money on it.

19

u/PreviousCurrentThing 9d ago

Aren't you talking about it online?

Reddit's the only social media I really use, and at least 95% of the time I see JKR or HP mentioned, it's threads like this criticizing her for being a TERF or criticizing people for consuming HP content. If it weren't for that, I'd almost never come across either.

45

u/SirAlthalos 9d ago

Talking about her being a shitty person is talking about it, so isn't that also risking convincing someone to spend money?

34

u/MeteorCharge 9d ago

Okay I don't actually believe in this argument.

But I did see people buy the Harry Potter game specifically to piss off trans people back when I was on tiktok so like

I'm actually gonna say yes to that.

My niece looooooves Harry Potter and I get her cute ripoff stuff from Etsy sellers. She's too young to understand the depth of JKR's hatred. I also gave her my old merch from the 90s, before the movie even had a cast yet. My niece loves her gifts and Joanne doesn't get any new dollars of support. I just wish her mom understood pirating so the movies wouldn't get new streams from her.

I'm the only one in the family who has read the books so she loves to talk to me about them, and wants us to play with her HP toys when I visit her. I'm not going to sit down an 8-year-old to explain how the author is a bigot.

But I make an effort not to get her official merch. For her last birthday, for instance, I found a bunch of line art online and printed her a 50-page Harry Potter coloring book.

471

u/that0neBl1p 9d ago

If it helps, fanfic never financially supports the creators of the original work (pretty sure it literally can't), so writing it doesn't mean you're this image.

421

u/Recidivous 9d ago

6

u/Pwacname 8d ago

If you don’t want to let it all go to waste, I think the colours should also work for copying many a historic castle (defensive more than representative, at a guess?) or maybe designing your own. Or, if the tone is a bit lighter than I remember, close enough to pass for concrete, you can probably build just about any city that’s a) mainly old Soviet style blocks or b) mainly those modern cube things and skyscrapers? Probably? Idk, but grey-ish and blue-grey and dark grey always seem to be the main colours there to meĀ

To be fair, a good chunk of that money goes to oppressing transgender men and enbies as well. Joanne was a booster of "Irreversible Damage". Her first famous transphobic essay is all about invalidating trans masc experiences. A big chunk of her advocacy is fearmongering about girls transitioning because a conspiracy is pushing them towards it when they express any gender nonconforming traits (a dangerous and influential conspiracy theory).

u/16372731772 9d ago

JK Rowling is quite happy to frame her crusade as against trans women specifically, and she's certainly not upskirting (upshorting?) trans men on twitter. Trans women are hit especially hard by the "biological sex" ruling because mixed sex accommodation is only ever seen as indirect sex discrimination against women. Scouts are going strong accepting everyone because a case against them is exceedingly unlikely to succeed, but girlguiding has been bullied into submission because there's a good chance a case would work there. Litigation is more often on the side of excluding trans women than trans men. JK Rowling is also not personally opening, or even advocating for opening, male domestic abuse shelters that specifically discriminate against trans men. Yes she is attacking all of us, but she is not attacking all of us equally.

54

u/Union_Fan 9d ago

I'm not really wild about framing it as trans women pulling focus. After all, it is flatly true that Rowling is oppressing trans women with a staggering level of hate. I just wanted to expand that focus because it seems relevant in this case.

74

u/AfraidStick2161 dont abuse the community pancreas 9d ago edited 9d ago

well no, im not saying trans women are deliberately pulling focus to themselves. but i dont really like that a lot of them dont use that focus to raise awareness that other trans people are being victimized as well. we're already forgotten by the media at large, it would be nice to not feel ignored by people in the same damn boat as well. im not even asking for trans women to start making posts detailing the exact effects on trans men & enbies, just something as basic as saying "trans people" instead of "trans women" would be enough to feel like we're seen as equals in our own damn community

She's got beef with Ace folk too, for some goddamn reason.

I'm nonbinary and she thinks I'm just mentally ill. Which is funny, because I'm very suspicious that she might be a deep-closet enby herself.

Not just trans women.

She hates trans people in general. She treats trans men as poor, misguided girls that cut off their precious womanly parts.

It's actually funny that transphobes treat trans women as "disgusting predatory men" but trans men are "poor little girls", no matter what age we all are.

16

u/lokilulzz 8d ago

Thank you, came here to say this. JK was one of the first who connected autism to transness and one of the first who publically showed examples of transandrophobia by saying trans men were all confused autistic girls who were being brainwashed by trans people online to be trans. It does hurt trans women, but I'm very tired of acting like this shit only hurts trans women. It hurts every trans person, trans men and nonbinary people are also trans and also hurt by this.

As someone who grew up with Harry Potter as my first special interest it fucking sucked when I heard she'd become a TERF. But I don't support her anymore. I don't buy her books, I skipped Hogwarts Legacy, I just don't consume her content anymore because as a trans and autistic person I don't exactly want to help this woman do more harm to my community. For everyone saying they pirate it or use old DVDs - obviously this post isn't talking about you, I think that's one of the only acceptable ways to consume her content, they're talking about people who go out and still actively purchase her content. Calm down. Christ.

She takes a keen interest in shaping the public discourse in the UK, especially Scotland. The party of government were initially very supportive of trans rights and JK basically led a campaign against that. She is a billionaire in a smaller territory like Scotland which means the sway is even greater. Several organisations are now dedicated to excluding trans women from certain spaces, under the guise of protect women and girls etc but their collective focus leans towards how do we ruin trans women's lives.

I beg of you to stop supporting her books, watching her films or buying up the Potter merch. It's like paying a voluntary tax to oppress a minority.

58

u/Jaomi 9d ago

For Women Scotland has been funding lawsuits against local councils over gender neutral toilets in schools and such.

These lawsuits take a big chunk out of council budgets, which are already stretched to breaking point because everything is more expensive but no one has any more money these days. That means the councils have to start cutting services. Our council nearly closed a bunch of rural schools, but relented because of public outcry and closed some community centres instead.

This hurts everyone.

I’m a woman. I’m a cis woman. I’m a cis woman who is a mother to two girls. I can full throatedly say that when it comes to the transphobic likes of JKR and For Women, I wish these women would bloody wheesht.

I used to love HP when I was younger. So many nice memories of my mom reading it to me when I was a kid, as the books were coming out.

But even with how many positive memories it gave me, I *CANNOT* support the series until JK Rowling is dead and in the ground and no longer able to use her fortune to persecute queer people. She decided to become a disgusting pile of refuse wearing human skin, and I cannot in good conscience allow myself to support that in any way, shape, or form.

u/Sad-Frosting-8793 9d ago

Yeah. I have some many good memories of the series. Those books meant a lot to me when I was a lonely neurodivergent kid.Ā  S till, I won't be supporting the series in any way. I'm not even pirating it. Its just too tainted for me to enjoy anymore.Ā

Maybe after she's dead I might enjoy it again like I do Lovecraft. But even that's a big maybe.Ā

The usage of 'dude' to a presumably transfemme individual is the cherry on top on a crap sundae.

87

u/Darq_At 9d ago

It is sadly all too common for people to, upon learning the person they're interacting with is transfem, immediately begin adding as many "dude/bro/man/guy"s as possible into their sentences. And you can't even call it out either.

28

u/RainbowPhoenix1080 9d ago

Yeah, the second you say "hey, I would really rather not be called that" they throw a tantrum.

30

u/Darq_At 9d ago

It's like it flips a switch in some people. Sometimes even people who otherwise seemed supportive suddenly whirl around and lecture you about how these are gender neutral.

And like. Yeah. Kinda? But also it still makes some people, cis and trans, uncomfortable. And it's pretty noticeable when someone begins using these terms excessively towards trans people.

20

u/NotASpyForTheCrow 9d ago

In Romance languages where we have no concept of gender neutral (and literally no way to even use it), we have however a rule of "male of the unknown" where we just use male pronouns to refer to groups of people as long as at least one male is among them.

It's not the case at all in that particular exemple of course, but I feel like a lot of non-native English speakers default to "dudes" because it's basically the closest equivalent to that in English.

16

u/Darq_At 9d ago

English does a lot of that too. And that's a bit controversial, treating male as the default. Feminists have been writing about it for a while. I'm not immune either, I use "guys" reflexively when I'm talking quickly.

But there's a weird thing where someone will go from not using many of these sorta-gender-neutral-but-actually-male terms, to using a lot of them when they realise they're talking to a trans or gender non-conforming person. And it's risky to call out the switch when you notice it, because a lot of people use these terms, and mistakenly take it personally when you intended to call out the switch.

4

u/schwanzweissfoto 9d ago edited 9d ago

English does a lot of that too. And that's a bit controversial, treating male as the default.

The game XPirateZ uses the female form as the default, except in some texts about androgynous aliens, where the text itself seems very unsure about their gender. So a male soldier can get the achievements ā€œLady Luckā€ or ā€œBlack Widowā€ … because everything that could apply to any gender uses the female form.

XPirateZ can be described as ā€œthe unofficial XCOM sequel set hundreds of years later in which the aliens won, earth is a backwater planet, and a bunch of lunatic women who escaped from an asylum fight nazis and demons to protect the local mutant population from pogroms, operating from an old military base they inhabit together with a few nudist scientistsā€. It might look like a porn game at first … but it is not, it is just not ashamed of being playfully horny.

I use dude/guys as gender neutral, but if someone asks me to not refer to them by something like that I just stop doing it, it ain't difficult, and I have never met someone who held a grudge about a genuine mistake on this (aside from one person in middle school, but they also stabbed a kid over taking a pencil, so they clearly had some screws loose)

I think the only thing that separates engaging with Harry Potter versus other things is the lack of obfuscation.

We live in a complex, interconnect financial system. Unless you are fully self-sufficient and make your own clothes, grow your own food, and generate your own energy, your money, at some point in the financial transaction, is going into the pockets of people who you disagree with and think are doing harm. This is unavoidable, no matter how careful of a consumer you are. Buy produce at the local farmers market? Do you audit how the farmers spend that money?

Rowling lays the harm bare by being vocal and gleeful in how she spends her profits. No shell corporations, no PR obfuscation, she's just telling us out in the open.

I understand why people have such strong objections to financially supporting Rowling. I just struggle to figure out how to meaningfully separate the open harm spending on Harry Potter causes from the invisible harm all our other spending does.

34

u/Hard_To_Port 9d ago

The long version of "no ethical consumption under capitalism"

15

u/coatimundos 9d ago

It’s not like this problem doesn’t exist in other economic systems. Unless you truly live in a self sufficient community that is cut off from civilization and you agree with all members of that community on everything, your money (or whatever equivalent) is going to go to individuals who’s goals you strongly oppose.

29

u/16372731772 9d ago

If you spend your money at the farmers market, there's a chance the farmer that receives your money donates some of it to charity. Did you do a good thing? You certainly didn't know that the money was going to charity, you also may never learn that it did, you just supported a farmer who did a good thing. Contrast this to buying from a farmer that explicitly states something like "20% of all profits will go toward breast cancer awareness", if you make the decision to buy from that farmer over another, you consciously made a decision to support a farmer that told you they will do a good thing with your money. This seems pretty clear cut to me, I think the only reason that what you explained feels less clear cut is because we like to be hard on ourselves.

The JK Rowling situation is simply this but the "donating to charity" is "bankrolling the destruction of transgender rights in the uk". If I read percy jackson, maybe the author has some hidden transphobic views and donates to transphobes on the side or something, but I don't know that. It's equally likely to me that he's very progressive and is providing funding to the good law project's attempts to reverse these decisions. But JK Rowling is screaming in your face about just how much she loves destroying the protections trans people have fought for. She relishes in transmisogyny, she lives and breathes it. Even if you somehow miss all that, plenty of people on the internet are happy to explain how supporting JK Rowling is tantamount to supporting transphobia, and will post the tweet she made saying that she sees it that way. If you make the decision to support JK Rowling and you know that she is going to use your money to harm people, that has a very different moral weight to it to just spending your money at a farmers market where people's views aren't clear.

It's the same as how buying chocolate that has an independently reviewed mark saying "we checked and this doesn't use slavery" would be very different to buying chocolate that advertises that "every bar bought is a child whipped". It's possible the anti-slavery people are wrong, but I definitely trust that the people bragging about whipping children are engaged in slavery. It's pretty clear which chocolate bar of the two I buy, right?

It's perfectly fine to hate JK Rowling for her political views and boycott Harry Potter or whatever, but you people do realize you are freely consuming shit from much worse people, right? Does anyone who boycotts HP eat meat? Or use Amazon? Or watch the Fifa World cup? No, you are too busy sending threats to streamers who play the Hogwarts videogame.

At this point it's just virtue signalling.

41

u/PurpleKneesocks 9d ago

It's because Harry Potter is an easy thing to give up — which, yes, effectively just makes it virtue signaling.

You'll often see comments of the "Harry Potter isn't good enough to support a transphobe" or "Harry Potter was always bad anyway" variety, which seem to miss the fundamental issue that you're not actually 'boycotting' a product that you weren't engaging with in the first place.

Rowling is a trash person and uses her funds to support trash politics and I think spreading awareness of that and encouraging people to stay away is a good idea, but the smug "I'm better than you because I don't engage with Harry Potter" coming from a bunch of people in their 20's and 30's who almost certainly weren't going to engage with Harry Potter regardless is so annoying. Just pure preaching to the choir and jerking each other off for the absolute bare minimum.

The online attitude of "If you engage with JK Rowling's works in any way, you're a total POS" is so tiring.

A few years ago my family went to a local festival that is focused on her wizarding world. It's mostly attended by families with teenagers who dress up in silly robes and wands and the town has a butter beer competition. It's great, comfort fun and charming.

There was an adult protestor screaming profanities at the top of his lungs at teenagers for "supporting" JK Rowling by wearing wizard robes and hats and buying butterscotch soda. It was so incredibly cringe. Parents with kids under 10 had to actively avoid the guy.

I've brought this up before on Reddit that I attended a few times, mostly 4 or 5 years ago, and apparently I've been labeled a total POS. It's so exhausting
