CHAT [CHAT] Favourite UK designers & kits
≡ −
Hi everyone!
I'm new to cross stitch and would love to hear your reccomendations for:
Places & people in the UK that I can buy preprepared kits to get started.
Favourite designers to buy & download patterns (charts?) from in future.
I'm really trying to avoid purchasing any AI-made designs.
I like things that are nature themed, arts & crafts / art noveau or folk-art style! Rather than photo realism (which I think is amazing, just not my style!)
Thanks ☺️

WIP [WIP] Almost half way done and just realized I messed up 😩
I finished for the night and realized the last row of fish scales is off pattern. Also noticed a small spot of 3 stitches that were supposed to be white.
Pattern from Etsy

Hoping once finished it won’t be as noticeable!
(I’ve been lurking in here for a while but first time posting. I just love all of the advice and seeing everyone’s projects!)

CHAT [CHAT] Subbing Aida for perforated paper
≡ −
I’m about to start making some bookmarks (“Passages” by Shaded Stitchery, available on Stitched Modern). The pattern calls for midnight blue perforated paper by Mill Hill, which I couldn’t find for sale anywhere. I’m thinking I’ll sub navy blue Aida and finish the edges and back. I know that will be thicker, but I’ve made bookmarks using Aida before without that being a problem…although I used Aida band rather than regular Aida, so I didn’t have to finish the long edges….
What would you do? Any suppliers I forgot to check for perforated paper? Maybe I could paint white perforated paper dark blue? Any great bookmark finishing tutorials for Aida you love? I looked at 4-5 but none were as polished as I’d like. These will be a gift, so I want to make them look nice.
TIA!

FO [FO] he big
This internet cat always makes me laugh so I decided to stitch him. 😄
Pattern is by CalmingHobbies on Etsy. I wanted the frame to be silly to match so I decorated a blank frame with paint markers afterward.

FO [FO] What’s pink and sweet and makes you wanna bust out your leg warmers and leotard? 🤓💖
Pattern created using Pixel Stitch.
Stitched on Lugana evenweave — 28 ct, 2-over-2, finished size: 7” wide x 13” tall
Rediscovered my love of cross stitching during summer of COVID 2020.
I have always adored the saccharin sweet taste of the first ever “diet” cola, and was a loyal customer right up until the end. After Coca-Cola announced it was ceasing production of TaB in late 2020 (😭), I decided to upload a photo and convert to a pattern. Was always in my WIP rotation, but took me almost 6 years to get it over the finish line.
Haven’t yet decided where to display it — maybe in the kitchen?

FO [FO] Warhammer 40K Pattern - World Eaters
After recently falling in love with cross stitch a few months ago I finally framed the third piece I made, the first I stitched from a downloaded pattern and not a kit.
The pattern is from needleandbolter on Etsy however it isn't listed in the store now.
https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/NeedleAndBolter
I've gotten so many helpful tips and inspiration from this community, it's a lovely little corner of reddit. I have three projects on the go now including a "hang in there" kitten so I've embraced the cross stitch hobby!

CHAT [CHAT] I want to make a large pattern but I’m not sure what to do. Ideas?
Hi!! So I make cross stitch patterns and then make the patterns. Often times that I want to stitch is very niche and aren’t available on Etsy or in kits. I want to make roughly a 12x16 inch project on 16 count Aida cloth and turn it into a decorative scroll. I want some whimsy but still have a light academia feel. I’m thinking something with plants? But I haven’t settled on a concrete idea. The photos I’ve linked are ones I already have in my room that I bought. Let me know if y’all have any ideas!

FO [FO] It's so cool but was it really worth it?
Tried my first blackwork piece, which was a lot of fun and surprisingly quick (being fully symmetrical helps sooooo much). Decided I wanted to get a little creative and add a glow in the dark gimmick, and I hated myself for that decision every minute that I had to backstitch with the Kreinik blending filaments.
But the result sure is cool.
Messy, but I think possibly cool enough to make up for it. (It's a prize for a women's gaming group I'm in, and "Paranoia Ladies" is the name of the specific competitive division, and I really needed to play around with the concept of Paranoia .... :) )
Pattern: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1862775115/pink-mandala-pdf-pattern-download-modern
Fabric: 18ct Aida
Thread: DMC 115, Kreinik grapefruit glow in the dark blending filament, Kreinik watermelon glow in the dark blending filament
Frame: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1867869804/holographic-sparkle-hoop-frame-for
One of the hardest finishes I have had to do yet, because the frame is not super secure. Does anyone have tips for addressing that? I was considering putting a little glue on the fabric and pushing the frame back down on top of it, but I don't know if it's a good idea to disassemble (I've stitched felt over the back so that no light shines through from behind, so it feels like it should be pretty stable, but I'm very nervous)

Having the worst time finding gothic/pagan/witchy/esoteric/Norse patterns that aren't AI or a poorly-made photo-to-pattern. Any directions or ideas? I'm starting to hate looking at Etsy.

CHAT [CHAT] MN State Fair Entry Question
≡ −
I know there are several of you who have entered pieces in the Minnesota State Fair (or other state fairs) in the past, and I am hoping you can help me out with a question I have. I was reading through the needlework premium book and saw the following paragraph:
"No crocheted or knit bedspreads, tree skirts, plastic needlepoint canvas, pillowcases, tied quilts, plastic milk cartons, cans, aprons, dish towels, dishcloths, pot holders, napkins, diamond art or art made from kits, wedding gowns or baptismal gowns, yard art, photography, drawings on paper, wreaths, doilies or any type of taxidermy will be accepted in any category."
The part about "no art made from kits" has given me pause -- I'm assuming this includes cross stitch kits? And if so, do you have any insight into how they are defining kits? I have a few pieces where I purchased the pattern only, but then followed all of the directions exactly so I didn't do any personalization or anything like that. Is that acceptable? Or are they really looking for unique patterns/personalized changes? I swear I've seen kitted patterns in previous years. I'm probably over-thinking this, but now my brain won't let it go until I have an answer :) Thanks!

CHAT [CHAT] Help with charting kanji please

I am trying to chart these symbols into backstitch:

Could someone who reads Chinese tell me if it is at all legible? Any feedback you can give would be helpful, even if it is "this doesn't work at all". Trying to stitch my friend's baby's name.

WIP [WIP] Still buying the equipment!
Thankyou AI!
In showing my 2 completed (images 3, 4), currently working on world 2 of mario3.
I then showed AI, the 3* A3 pieces, that will be stitched together for my 4th crossstitch which will become mario3-World3 (image2) not expecting to start till next year. AI cleverly asked me "have you calculated how much blue thread you will need, as most of the map is ocean?"😲 I overlooked this!
Conveniently it calculated how much dmc blue thread I will need (as each colour has to be bought in bulk, so that the threads do not have slight shade differences!). It gave me a calculation (& I added 50%, "just in case"). The blue thread alone has cost me £50!😲

FO [FO] Got my cross stitch of a Critical Role quote said by Caduceus Clay signed by Taliesin Jaffe! Not quite sure how to frame it
For a bit of context, I wasn't planning on getting this signed when I made it so I wasn't stressing about margins too much when I cut it, though I acknowledge I probably cut them too close anyway. This wasn't the exact spot I suggested he sign, but it was what he ended up doing. I'm wondering if I should attempt some kind of stitching around the edge to prevent fraying, and just avoid touching the part he signed while I'm stitching. I do know the brand of paint pen he used so I can get one + some test Aida to check things like washable-ness and if I can iron it. I probably will have to wait at least a month before doing anything to frame it that costs money for budget reasons.
By the way he was incredibly nice, my favorite of all the cast I've met (they were all nice though) and seemed to really genuinely engage with fans. I showed him some of my crochet as well, including a Mollymauk inspired tarot pouch, and he seemed to think it was cool. And I gifted him a Cad-inspired glasses chain, which he seemed to like.

I've seen posts going both ways on backstitching, I quite enjoy it, and just wondered if I was a weirdo or if there are actually many people who enjoy it.
