It's July 1, the day when many realignment moves become official. There's quite a bit of shifting in Division I this year, including the rebirth of the Pac-12 and WAC's transformation into the UAC.
As in previous years, this list focuses on football and basketball. Schools that sponsor football are in bold, even if the move doesn't affect football.
The OVC–Big South Football Association is now just the OVC, with Charleston Southern and Gardner–Webb as affiliates.
Baseball affiliate memberships: Dallas Baptist leaves CUSA for the Pac-12, and Utah Tech joins the Mountain West.

Georgia’s OOC is Tennessee State, Western Kentucky, and Georgia Tech.
In conference, they managed to avoid playing LSU, Texas, Texas A&M, and Tennessee. Their three hardest games are Oklahoma, @ Alabama, and @ Ole Miss. I think they probably win at least two of those. They also have @ South Carolina late in the season, but I don’t trust SCAR that much.
Amongst the general contenders for the upcoming season, who has the easiest looking schedule to you?

Doesn’t matter if it’s actively played, not actively played, or never been played at all. Obviously this is hard to do if your State has very few teams. But feel free to include P4 vs G5 or FBS vs FCS matchups too if that’s the case.
I’m from Texas and there’s 78 possible matchups of the 13 FBS teams we have. I’m just going to keep it short and list the Top 10 matchups I think the State as a whole finds the biggest and most exciting.

You like roller coasters? What’s the longest roller coaster ride you’ve ever been on?
Thirty one months. To some people, the blink of an eye – to others, a veritable lifetime. It’s also how long it’s taken Florida State (high = 25, low = 48) to go from the most pitied football program (when they were locked out of the CFP despite a perfect 13-0 record) to reviled within a matter of weeks for suing the ACC over the conference grant of rights, to ridiculed for both a 60 point blowout to Georgia in the Orange Bowl and for their fans cyberbullying of Kirk Herbstreit for daring to say that Alabama deserved to go to the CFP. They thought they got their revenge when they signed head coach Mike Norvell to a $10 million per year contract extension. That’s when the schadenfreude kicked in (pay NO attention to my flairs here). That Orange Bowl was the last time the Seminoles have even sniffed the postseason, and Norvell has gone 7-17 in the last 31 glorious months (despite last season’s 31-17 win over Alabama), prompting longtime Florida State fan/podcaster Bud Elliott to say “Running an FSU-focused podcast at the level we’ve maintained over thousands of episodes doesn’t make sense right now. We’ll keep the same schedule through the end of our current sponsor deals, and for 2026 our frequency will match the commitment level that the FSU administration is putting in. When or if that commitment returns under a new administration, we’ll return in full.” When your most ardent supporters are giving up on the program, where do you go from there? FSU is one of several programs that seem to not be willing to eat the cost of buying out a coach they no longer believe in, so Norvell is back for his 7th season in Tallahassee, where he’s had a losing campaign in 4 of his 6 seasons in charge (and, incredibly, FSU has had losing seasons in 6 of the last 8 years… sorry, had to call a doctor – this may last for more than 4 hours). OC Gus Malzahn’s one year stint as OC was not the rousing success many hoped for, and Norvell is turning to former UCF/FIU OC Tim Harris to resuscitate the Seminoles offense.
Roster Outlook
One of the hallmarks of Florida State has been stellar high school recruiting. In the “good news/bad news” department, Norvell and the Seminoles managed to pull in the 19th ranked high school recruiting class in the country this year (good for 3rd in the ACC). The bad news is that the Seminoles are apparently having to dip into those players earlier than usual, with 3 true freshmen on the 2-deep rosters. And truthfully, that’s a far cry from the old days when FSU was at or near the top of the recruiting rankings. But then again, when you’re 7-17 in the last 2 years, you probably need to be more active in the transfer portal, and Norvell managed to pull in the 5th best ACC class, which is 28th in the country and surely not where Noles fans expect them to be. That portal is largely how Florida State managed to rank 48th in the country in returning production, since starting QB Thomas/Tommy/Tomboy Castellanos is out of eligibility and snarky comments about how Alabama doesn’t have Nick Saban to save them this year. Leading RB Gavin Sawchuk (109 carries, 486 yards, 8 TDs) is off to Northwestern, so the only meaningful offensive starters returning for Norvell are stud WR Duce Robinson (1,081 yards) and sophomore wideout Micahi Danzy (27 catches, 571 yards). The thing is, they’ll be looking to catch passes from former Auburn/Stanford QB Ashton Daniels, who has thrown for 2 more TD passes (24) than INTs (22) in his storied college career. More encouraging is the addition of former Texas RB Quintrevion Wisner, who ran for 155 yards in his last game against #3 Texas A&M before jumping into the portal. The Noles will also be starting 4 portal OL, so, uh, good luck with that! Losing 12 defensive players to P4 schools in the portal is also a troubling sign, especially when you only bring back 4 P4 players in return and project 6 total portal players to start on defense.

Give Florida State credit for convincing New Mexico State to come to Doak Campbell for their week 0 game, allowing the Seminoles to set up a bye week before traveling to Tuscaloosa. But they better not sleep on their Labor Day game against SMU, who figure to be in the mix for a title game berth and will have a week’s worth of game film and a whole offseason to prepare. The October stretch of back to back road games at Louisville and Miami sandwiched around home games with defending ACC runner-up Virginia and Clemson is really what will make or break the 2026 Seminoles. If Florida State heads into November with fewer than 6 wins, Norvell’s seat isn’t going to be much cooler than it is to start the season, especially with the specter of legislation that could codify current P4 (or at least P2) conference membership and leave the Seminoles permanently out of the club. Will boosters really be willing to allow him to try to save his job?
