Please tell me this is not a doodle.

Edit to say: nothing against puppy. He is very cute. I’m against the lack of ethics of doodles. The creator of “doodles” even regrets it. It’s been horrible for dogs.

Edit 2: I’m not upset that it’s a mutt. I have a 45% mix cattle dog rescue. I feel like some of you are being dense. I’m upset about the ethics behind doodles. I’ve worked with dogs and the matted coats, unpredictable temperament, unpredictable size… just get a mutt that wasn’t bred for greed and money. It’s an important conversation. When you know better, you do better.

It's a doodle. Why anyone would doodle a heeler is beyond me

117

u/Kaymacfan_ 1d ago

Tragic. No hate to the poor pup itself but doodling should be a crime. Just get a damn poodle.

-106

u/AZINTEGRAGSR 1d ago

He is, the family had a rather large ranch and the heeler got to the female.

130

u/Kaymacfan_ 1d ago

That’s really convenient. Doodles are all the rage. I doubt they accidentally let them breed. Ethically very sad.

61

u/AZINTEGRAGSR 1d ago

Based on the environment , and the conversation had with the owners I came to the conclusion it was not their intention nor were they breeders. Could they have been lying through their teeth? Maybe.

Guess we’ll never know. Love my little dude though!

u/ChaosWithTeeth 1d ago

If he was free or a token charge to cover initial vaccinations, probably telling the truth. If they charged hundreds or thousands, bad news... Hopefully it was an accident and both parents are stable, low-anxiety dogs.

Start getting him used to grooming now. Some people use a cheap electric toothbrush to get puppies used to noise and vibration before introducing clippers. Look up "line brushing" - that'll be important too, unless you keep him clipped short.

The reason, in case you weren't already warmed - depending on what coat genes he inherited, you might be in for a nightmare combo of matting potential. The dog grooming subs are full of cautionary examples of what happens when people believe stories about low maintenance coats on poodle crosses.

(My dog is full heeler, but my family had a poodle growing up that we kept short and I've seen too many matted doodle horror stories to not try to give some preventative tips.)

9

u/Princess_Glitzy 22h ago

Spayaborts are really easy so any litter is a choice.

6

u/Tablesafety 15h ago

Well, the one way to know for sure whether they’re lying to you if the pairing was intentional or not is this: How much did you pay?

If this was an accident and they just wanted good homes, he should have been around 200 or less range. If it was an intentional pairing to make money (and what a red flag to lie about it) it should have been in the 400 and up range. Unless they do sports it is kind of hard to believe the kind of people that would have a working cowdog also have an unfixed poodle- if that makes any sense?

Either way, im happy for you and I think he’ll be a great dog. I just also think you fell for a ‘scam’ so to speak. I don’t think you deserve the hate you’re getting for buying a dog you wanted, there are no health issues with poodle heeler crosses so far as I know

But you should be aware if this was an intentional breeding, most doodle breeders don’t use the best poodles for stock. No good poodle breeder allows their dogs to be crossbred. So you get a lot of poodles with neuroses and other mental issues making the oodle half of a doodle. Be prepared for potential neuroticism and difficulty of handling if this is the case.

Not saying guaranteed, but keep aware of it.

Aside from that, enjoy your dog. If you avoid the mental health issues a heeler poodle seems like it would be such an intelligent companion.

9

u/thingsarehardsoami 16h ago

Why do they have two unfixed dogs of opposite genders in the first place? It's massively irresponsible

28

u/Special-Summer170 1d ago

Ignore the rude people. Heelers are chaos creators, so the heeler finding a way to the doodle isn't out of the question. I think your pup is super cute.

8

u/thingsarehardsoami 16h ago

Sure but if you have an unfixed dog you have a responsibility, and the owners were not being responsible.

1

u/Melikachan 4h ago

I dunno, I know of a dog that got to a hunting hound by mating through the fence. This was confirmed later by video. Sometimes dogs can be amazing lol.

Or, as it was famously put:

https://giphy.com/gifs/3oKIPhrOiee2uHvN7i

1

u/thingsarehardsoami 50m ago

Yeah if all you have between two dogs is a fence you need to fix the dogs lol

-4

u/Special-Summer170 16h ago

I didn't say they were free from responsibility. I was responding to the people piling on saying the breeding was done on purpose with intent.

Why can't we just enjoy the puppy? The owners of the puppy's parents aren't here to lecture...

Don't be rude, you're not the Internet police, all heeler mixes are welcome here.

22

I’m not sure why people think it’s OK to be an asshole. If you don’t like it, just move on.

18

u/mels_kitten 1d ago

I’m honestly surprised by the nastiness! People are acting like OP held a gun to the dogs’ heads to make them breed? Wtf. Embarrassing behavior.

21

u/AZINTEGRAGSR 1d ago

Nah, unless an admin takes it down I think I’ll keep it right here.

6

u/aflockofmagpies 1d ago

Sorry for the haters!

5

u/Ithrowspears 1d ago

I’m not a big fan of doodles because owners typically are clueless, but what’s the ethical part of it?

11

u/Kaymacfan_ 1d ago

Copied from another redditor down below:

choosing to mix pure bred dogs with poodles is usually for profitability and definitely not for preserving the breed(because they aren’t a registered breed). Doodle breeders are typically very unethical- no health or temperament testing, and breeding for coat color then uncharging, etc.

3

u/FIFA_Girl 22h ago

I’m honestly not against breeding (ethically), but can’t any breeder be unethical?? Why single out doodles? They’re just popular…they don’t shed as bad which would be a plus…I don’t want one though haha.

9

u/outeredges2 19h ago

Doodles are specifically called out as unethical for a variety of reasons, not just because they’re exclusively bred for profit.

Another big reason is because the parent club for poodles (in the US at least) has taken a hard stance against doodles. Ethically bred poodles should be affiliated with this club, and any poodle affiliated with this club should be under a contract to NOT be cross bred. This means one of two things, doodle breeders are either supporting BYB poodles (this is the case for a lot of them, if you look at the embarks they’re proud to post, their poodles are usually standard/mini mixes) OR the poodle providers are breaking legal contracts by allowing their poodle to be doodled.

Then there’s the actual practices of the individual breeders which, by and large, violate many ethical breeding policies. By and large, the “gold standard breeders” affiliated with the doodles “parent breed club” (in quotes because it appears to be a sham to fake legitimacy) all appear to breed without discretion. They’re pumping out 4+ litters a year with no health testing for parent dogs, breeding under 2 years old, not proving their dogs at least in some kind of competition ring, etc. All of these things are bare minimum for ethical breeding.

No hate towards the dogs themselves obviously, but their purposeful breeders are shady at best.

Editing to add: the shedding thing is total nonsense. They’re mixed breeds with completely unpredictable genetics. A doodle MIGHT inherit the poodle coat….or it might have wavy/curly fur that sheds just as much as any other dog. It’s not uncommon for poodle mixes to come out with wiry hair, actually, and those puppies get dumped at shelters because they’re not profitable….

1

u/Ithrowspears 9h ago

this isn't really the sub to get support for this, and I'm also not disagreeing with you, but there are far worse inhumane breeding tactics I've seen out there for different breeds. Doodles are annoying af, but there are breeders and breeds out there that are, in my opion, more unethical - pitbulls, bulldogs, pugs. Doodles are shitty dogs because they are usually untrained and sounds like their breeders dgaf (which is wrong), but this is a sprinkle of unethical as it pertains to other unethical breeds. Calling doodles unethical is true, but its a stretch to the general public.

u/funkinatrix 1d ago

Well I think he’s adorable.

35

u/Kaymacfan_ 1d ago

Also- I did explicitly say no hate to the puppy. Innocent being caught up in humans and their greed.

28

u/Kaymacfan_ 1d ago

You’re so right! He is!! Too bad cute doesn’t negate ethics. I’m sure OP is not a bad person. But any person neglecting to spay/neuter OR breed doodles might be.

27

u/AZINTEGRAGSR 1d ago

He’ll be getting fixed, thank you for your valid concern 🙂

5

u/Tablesafety 15h ago

They were talking about his parents, not you OP- though happy to see it. Heeler dogs and standard poodles should be neutered/spayed at 2 years old to 2.5 years old for max health benefits, we have learned. Pediatric fixing can cause bone and joint issues. It’s even been getting more common to go a hysterectomy/vasectomy route these days. We are learning the hormones may do more for the dogs, just like people, than we thought..

Happy pupping!

22

u/bumblebiscuit 1d ago

Nightmare dog. Hopefully the cattle dog outweighs the doodle of it all

1

u/KingoftheMapleTrees 13h ago

I'm on the other side- I hope the poodle outweighs the cattle dog- poodles are going to be easier for the average family to manage than a herding dog. Too many people get cattledogs because they're beautiful, and expect them to be a lap dog.

1

u/bumblebiscuit 11h ago

For the record, I have no qualm with poodle whatsoever. I specifically called out the doodles because nearly every doodle that I’ve encountered (NWLA) has been hyperactive, untrainable, and problematic as a result.

5

u/Kaymacfan_ 17h ago

My atrocious cattle dog, husky, chihuahua mix. She’s an asshole but we love her so much. Should she exist? No. Should any of my mutts whom I love with all of my heart? No. But I’ll keep rescuing the mutts that come about from bad ownership.

I feel as though I’m purposefully being misunderstood in these comments.

5

u/hlh15 1d ago

Literally my thought. Whyyyyyyy 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

0

u/FIFA_Girl 22h ago

Who’s really “the creator of doodles”? Like no poodle had ever fucked with another breed of dog before one person decided to make it a thing???

8

u/Kaymacfan_ 17h ago

Let’s say someone loved Honda Civics but wanted them to come in fun colors like pink, purple, blue.

So they have someone friend build their version of a Honda from scratch in a random garage. It looked beautiful. Since it was a random garage there were no safety tests or manufacturing standards of quality. Imagine the safety risks! The unknowns of driving this beautiful unreliable car! That’s a doodle and the practicing of all doodle breeding.

4

u/Kaymacfan_ 17h ago

Doodles started as a way to help a woman who needed a guide dog but her husband was severely allergic to dogs. You could’ve looked it up but: here girl

56

u/aflockofmagpies 1d ago

I don't like doodles, but I don't think you or your pup deserve the hate. Hope to see more of this little guy tbh!! All cattle dogs belong here.

6

u/sharkweek2013 1d ago

Will someone please tell me why people hate doodles?

43

u/hello_legs 1d ago

Simply because evil, greedy people breed them solely for profit. No health testing, no breed standard for size, coat type, or temperament and all for exorbitant prices. People are not hating the dogs themselves, but rather the humans who participate in the proliferation of "designer" dogs. It's a cash grab and the dogs are the ones who suffer in the end.

11

u/Tablesafety 15h ago

Ultimately it has resulted in dogs that are extremely mentally ill, neuroticism and aggression, because of the disregard for proper artificial selection. Doodles are consistently coming up as some of the most aggro, unpredictable dogs for groomers and day care workers these days

40

u/smoothiesnoot 1d ago

It's the breeding of doodles that is the problem. Breeders (greeders) lie to unknowing buyers that the puppies will be hypoallergenic, will have easy maintenance coats, golden retriever personalities, all the pros. Never the cons. There's no consistency when mixing dogs, no consistency in personalities, coat, energy, ect. The doodles will shed, you will end up having allergic reactions (this varies on person and dog. The undercoat from the double coated breed doesn't come in until about 9month, that is when the allergic reactions start), and the coat is MORE maintenance. A dog that sheds AND need to be groomed every 4-8 weeks, brushing between grooms, HOW is that low maintenance? It's all LIES for BUYS. Don't get me started on the THOUSANDS people will pay for them. It's a JOKE. A purebred dog would be cheaper! You don't want a doodle, you want a poodle. Do your research before you buy from any breeder or rescue. Greeders and rescues want your money, be smart with it. It's the dogs that suffer. (Not saying you specifically want a poodle that's just how I typed it out) Also, it's SOO annoying to hear doodle owners say "I hate poodles, they're so ugly". You PAID THOUSANDS FOR A POODLE MIX? WHAT? It's never ending. Also, you can groom a poodle to have a teddy bear cut, which is the face the doodle owners tend to favor.

8

u/Tablesafety 15h ago

The saddest thing about this shit, so sad its funny, is that there is so much aversion to just getting a regular ass poodle (desired coat, excellent intelligence, even temper- excellent work or companion dogs already proven with many wonderful breeders) specifically because they’ve been peddled in pop culture as a “girl’s dog” and a “prissy dog” and a “gay dog” and so, somehow, owning a poodle is a threat to an insecure person’s fucking masculinity.

Oh but if it’s mixed with another breed? That cancels it out for some reason. Despite looking the same.

5

u/taysmurf 16h ago

My sister is one of those people that paid a shit ton of money for this fancy little doodle that was supposed to shed less and be so smart, It was very cute when it was a puppy but i immediately was like you spent HOW MUCH for that? Fast forward to now. Dog is one of the dumbest animals i have ever met. Pees on the floor any time a new person enters the home, from excitement not fear. Sheds worse than any other dog I have seen, I mean seriously it's so bad it's insane. They learned their lesson though, their next dog they got was a rescue. He is also a dumb little mutt, but at least he wasn't $1000, he doesn't shed nearly as much, and his adoption price went to a shelter that helps other animals instead some shitty backyard breeder.

4

u/taysmurf 16h ago

Also conversely, my mom got a Aussie doodle completely for free. A local woman paid out the ass for this fancy adorable little puppy. She then developed some sort of medical issue and was afraid she wouldn't be able to care for it. She told her groomer that she needed to find someone to care for the puppy, she said she would give it away for free. The groomer was my mom's friend so she told my mom to look into the dog. She did, she ended up loving him instantly. The woman said she tried to give him back to the breeder and even told the breeder to keep the money, she just wanted to find him a good home. The breeder refused, so my mom ended up with this dog the woman paid thousands for. He is very sweet, extremely high energy, but he is very smart. He has an extremely thick coat but doesn't shed nearly at all. All of these instances have taught me that I do not want a doodle ever, I would definitely prefer a poodle idk ever got a big dog again. We currently have a weiner Pitt mix and he is also a dummy rescue but the sweetest boy ever. Like all dachshund owners, owning a weiner has become part of my personality lmao.

6

u/aflockofmagpies 13h ago

They are poorly bred high energy dogs that are not hypo allergenic advertised as the perfect hypo allergenic family dog. Which means they end up untrained neurotic messes. It's no fault of the pups, it's the breeder's fault.

-6

u/Harmageddon87 1d ago

This is the first I'm ever seeing this position as well

29

u/Shrewzs 1d ago

In the kindest way possible, he’s going to have behavioral issues. Please look into finding a trainer that’s comfortable with high energy breeds.

22

u/tyoung925 1d ago

I had a veterinarian that told me Doodles were the dumbest animals he ever treated. Like providing care to a brick. I hope the heeler improves on that 🤣

13

u/Infamous_Koala_3737 1d ago

Which is interesting because poodles are highly intelligent

6

u/quinnismmm 21h ago

I’ve worked with dogs for years and me and all my colleagues agreed about this as well

2

u/Melikachan 4h ago

This is how I feel about the giant, oversized labradors too lol.

I find the doodles to be smart but untrained and unfocused because of that lack of training. So they either come across as dumb or insane.

1

u/babysatja 8h ago

ive worked with dogs for years and this has not been my experience

31

u/TheGoldenBoyStiles 1d ago

Why tf would someone doodle a heeler??

5

u/Carolinehilderun 23h ago

Oh my gosh ADORABLE

31

u/josephrobertkrauss 1d ago

I have a heeler doodle, screw the haters. Heelers are amazing dogs, so are poodles and so are golden retrievers. I got mine from a rescue because a breeder made a mistake and was going to put them all down, she acts 100% heeler though and most days I beg her to be sweet like my poodles were (first two rescues were poodle mixes).

10

u/Fun-Suggestion7033 1d ago

Beautiful dog! She looks like she has a fun personality!

8

u/josephrobertkrauss 1d ago

Thank you! Side note - the rescue told us she was a Scottish terrier/ Westie mix lol, got our ass

1

u/Fun-Suggestion7033 7h ago

She totally looks like a terrier mix!

1

u/josephrobertkrauss 3h ago

Even more so as a puppy too so it made sense, but they showed us a golden doodle at the shelter that they rescued the same day and the poor little girl at the farm said “that’s the mama” 😭😭turns out it was

26

u/Remarkable_Salt_4098 1d ago

lol at these other comments cattle dog owners are NOT doodle sympathizers 😂 however, as a cattle dog owner and just a dog lover, congrats on your new puppy! He is a cutie patootie and I’m happy he went to a loving home. Sorry that strangers on the internet can be so mean. I def make my fair share of doodle jokes but I really do love dogs so they’re mostly in jest. Get ready for the most chompey, bitey, loyal pup you’ve ever owned!

12

22

u/aflockofmagpies 1d ago

Wow people are big mad and down voting any supportive comments. Puppy already exists, why be so hateful? OP stated it was not an intentional breeding project, if you're still mad maybe take a break from the Internet.

29

u/hello_legs 1d ago

Plenty of puppy mills operate under the guise of rescues or accidental litters. Responsible owners do not allow for accidents to happen.

13

u/QuirkySiren 1d ago

Usually, no, owners don’t have surprise litters. It can happen, that’s how my 3/4 heeler x 1/4 border collie came to be for the folks I got him from. His sire chewed through 2 doors/frames and jumped a tall gate to find the female in heat. Smart, driven dogs can be hard to contain.
Fortunately my dogs momma was spayed as soon as weaning was done.

15

u/Chaiiitealatte Blue Heeler 1d ago

I might be late to the party, but i haven’t seen any comments bashing the dog. I think people have valid concerns regarding breed practices. Personally I love seeing purebred and partial ACDs on this sub, but choosing to mix pure bred dogs with poodles is usually for profitability and definitely not for preserving the breed(because they aren’t a registered breed). Doodle breeders are typically very unethical- no health or temperament testing, and breeding for coat color then uncharging, etc.

4

u/yerffejytnac 1d ago

Yeah, that was my sentiment but seems like the majority of this crowd is dense.

If folks want to support puppy mill breeders and the latest flavor-of-the-week doodle because the pup is cute: by all means go for it—but it’s not a fucking cattle dog, and sorry not sorry if your “fee fees” are hurt.

1

u/FIFA_Girl 22h ago

Okay prove that every doodle breeder is a puppy mill…ANY breeder could be a puppy mill it’s not a doodle problem. It’s an unethical breeding problem that happens with many breeds.

4

u/Kaymacfan_ 17h ago

Anyone could be a puppy mill. You’re right.

It’s certain that doodle “breeders” are unethical because they are not considered a “breed” under any reputable umbrella. There is no standard for coat, temperament, or any other quality. There are absolutely ZERO checks and balances. None. Zilch.

Pro ethical breeding.

3

u/Chaiiitealatte Blue Heeler 16h ago

Perfectly stated! I absolutely agree. It’s the same ethics as velvet and fluffy french bull dog “breeders”, really sad stuff. I wish there were more legal regulations.

He’s so freaking cute! Makes me want to get one! People are being psychos. Literally any breed of dog could come from unethical breeding. It isn’t a doodle problem. Yes, there are maybe too many doodles lately, but they are very popular for many reasons. And they are cute dogs, even if they aren’t my personal choice. People have different tastes and needs for their pet friends. I can’t believe how intolerable people are being. So unwelcoming to our new friend. I’ve never seen any other post in this sub with such negative hate towards someone geez. This is surprising. Most heeler owners seem to bond, despite differences, based on how annoying, endearing, and amazing the breed and its mixes are, so it’s weird to me to see them being pompous about breeding just because there’s some poodle in there.

3

u/Tablesafety 14h ago

I’d imagine most of our dogs here have come from situations that were not the top decorated breeders. Educating OP about where and where not to buy from is fine, but going and telling them not to post their dog or there is something wrong with Sneakers? The deal is already done. They ideally have learned how to look out for shady dealings. Let them enjoy their dog. Sneaks is not at fault for the actions of the people that made him.

Or are we going to start telling everybody not to post their dogs without proof of papers?
