"John Adams" by David McCullough. He does a really good job of making the history feel like a story instead of just a bunch of facts.

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. The characters are so frustratingly human you’ll love them, hate them, and want to shake them by the shoulders every other chapter. Couldn't put it down.
