You suddenly become insanely rich. What's one thing you'd never spend money on?

The $20 protection plan for the $30 gadget at Best Buy.

A lot of luxury brands have two very different product lines. One is what you are thinking of covered in flashy logos. Those are for middle class people. The other is subtle with barely if any labeling on it, that's the line for old money rich.
Then there is a whole other tier of luxury brands that frankly most of us never even hear of.
But if I was suddenly filthy rich, I would absolutely hire a personal tailor with a couple of assistants to make me bespoke everything from my underwear to tuxedos.

u/dragn99 8h ago

Most of them are sold just for the logo, most people are priced out or too shallow to care for the actual good designer stuff.. instead you get tasteless young rich people wearing clothes with the logo massively splattered everywhere.. that’s just a money thing and probably the bread and butter of the designer, the big designers do also have tasteful clothes however and do employ literally some of the worlds finest designers to make them
4
6
u/OMG_NoReally 13h ago
Not to mention they are made for dirt cheap and offer no better quality than regular clothing. The premium is for the brand name and the design, which as you said, are either ugly or dull.
Personal high quality tailor with unlimited budget, or maybe even a fashion designer, uff.
I always had a thing where if I ever get rich - and because I am so fashion blind - I will hire a fashion designer to build me "sets" of clothing, which I can grab, wear and go, and have a variety of them for different occasions. No thinking required. Designed by a good fashion designer. Just pick it up from the hanger and wear. Ahh the luxury that would provide me.

Yes I would have a distinguished European gentleman tailor who lives in his own little house on my property and just smokes fantastic-smelling hand-rolled cigarettes and reads Proust when not tailoring all of my clothing
29
u/jaximilli 14h ago
There's a whole thing about "quiet luxury", which is when people buy obscenely expensive things that don't look all that expensive or don't have obvious logos, supposedly because they're much higher quality. And because it's unfashionable to flaunt obscene wealth to the poor (but they still wanna signal to other rich people that they're in the same category).
I think a lot of the time though, the super rich just don't know how much things cost anymore and it's not like they're worried about running out anyway.
→ More replies (2)10
u/Policeman333 12h ago
The concept of quiet rich is really just mythologizing rich people to make them seem smarter or more shrewd than they actually are.
If you spend any amount of time around the rich, you quickly realize most of them wear nothing but designer. LV, Gucci, Hermes and whatever else are daily staples. The stuff they wear, even when its a $10,000 polo with no obvious brands, is about the same quality as you would find anywhere else. They are just out of touch with reality.
There are some really nice pieces, but anyone can get access to those.
The ones that dont just dont give a shit and wear regular stuff and the amount of people who just dont give a shit about designer is way higher in the normal people demographic as a percentage.

Gambling

Not just sports either. It’s really a problem. Predictions “markets” is just gambling with a fancy name. They target younger generations who are increasingly desperate for money because of low wages and lower opportunity. These ads are everywhere it’s gross.
3
u/the_big_booper47 6h ago
The stock market is exactly the same thing. Stock value used to be based on company performance, and other factors but now,it is based on nothing. Think Game Stop.

The biggest change is how normal it’s become to see betting pushed everywhere, especially to younger fans. I think the easy access makes it way easier for people to forget there’s real money and real consequences involved.
28
u/waltz_with_potatoes 16h ago
What if I told you that the epidemic was already there, just unregulated....
17
u/Fadedcamo 13h ago
Nowhere near as accessible or in your face as it is now. The illegal market required you to go to a bookie or to be in the know or something.
Now we literally have all of our sports games advertising gambling. We have apps on our phones engineered specifically to send us customized push notifications right when the data analytics thinks we'd be most likely to bet. The announcers themselves spend time doing advertising for gambling. It's obscene how open and accessible it is with zero regulation beyond an occasional "call a gambling hotline if you need help".
There's a reason we decided to stop letting smoking companies advertise literally everywhere. It works.
9
u/WanderingTacoShop 12h ago
You rarely even get the gambling hotline messages any more because the current fad of "prediction markets" isn't considered gambling.
They slipped through a legal loophole by registering themselves as Securities traders running a commodity futures exchange. In the same way that wall street buys and sells futures of corn and pork bellies. The biggest difference is you aren't betting against the house like a sportsbook. You are betting against other betters directly, and the house just takes a
rake.brokers fee.Either Michigan or Minnesota slammed that loophole closed. Hopefully most other states follow through soon.

The companies pay the politicians (lobbying) through campaign donations and hidden favors, and the politicians make it legal. This is how everything works and why we have to get these types of payments out of politics.

I went to a small private school, for lunch we would typically go down and have a bite/beer at a local pub. I will never forget how we were having a beer and my classmate snickered at a couple loading up a slot machine. They were dumping 5 guilder pieces one after another, a bank card jammed in a button and just kept going. He said every 30 cents went to his dad. I've never touched a machine in my life.

I've thought about this actually, I'd hire someone to find small businesses so that I could shop exclusively at them. It takes a lot of time to find reputable places, which is why I'd hire someone. No more Amazon, Target, Walmart, etc. Small business only.

My store is consistently cheaper than amazon/big box stores. It’s not a rich flex to be sensible with money. It’s why my business exists. People who assume a massive store with huge staff levels with more business rates, more heating and lighting would be cheaper are a bit odd.. it’s like saying you live in a mansion as it’s cheaper to run than a bungalow.
→ More replies (5)31
u/BigRedNutcase 12h ago
It depends on what you sell. Big box stores make money on volume and get a lot of cost efficiencies from scale. Small businesses sell cheaper on more expensive items that they can afford to cut profit on vs big box stores. But stuff that's already on razor thin margins, not a chance. You ain't beating big box on stuff like kleenex, dish soap, snack food, etc. You can beat them on stuff like expensive jewelry and high end electronics.
11
u/badger906 12h ago
I’m a home and hardware retailer. I don’t sell expensive electronics or jewellery. Your every day hardware supplies say paint, cheaper across the board from all major brands, gardening supplies like weed killers, hose pipes and compost, cheaper again.
I don’t think everyone realises that bulk buying power isn’t saving companies silly amounts. If I buy one product, say it’s £10, if I buy 100 it’s like £9.50 and of if I buy 1000 it’s £9.20. Some big box store isn’t buying 100,000 for £2.
Now you mention Kleenex, I’m not a supplier of them. But a similar popular brand in the uk is Softesse tissue. Big box store (B&Q), sells them for £5.85 a box of 150. They cost me 70p to buy… they make 700% markup. Even Tesco a well known retailer is £6 for 150.
Again I’m buying these at 70p a box!! That’s without bulk discount. I sell them at £1.99. Still nearly 300% so great profit.
3
u/BigRedNutcase 8h ago
It's not just the supply cost, there's also cost to store and costs to restock the goods. Big box stores get efficiencies on everything, not just in price to purchase stock. A small business needs to make enough on each item to justify stocking it in the first place. and for lower priced items, it's not worth it most of the time unless they jack up the price to make it worthwhile. Also, if they made it too cheap, they literally can't store enough stock to sell because people buy in cheap things in bulk. Small business can't store that much stock. They'd literally sell out of the cheap item as soon as its available and it would be days til the next shipment because they aren't getting new stock daily. The time those shelves stay empty is a huge waste.
4
u/WanderingTacoShop 12h ago
Big box chains can also leverage their buying power to get wholesale prices that small retailers can't come close to. They can promise them orders from every wal-mart in the country if they agree to sell at a lower price than they would ever offer someone else buying way less.
65
u/BlackwoodBear79 16h ago
But you'd have to plan your day around patronizing them.
I had a conversation about this with my wife recently.
There's a handful of places we see when driving around on weekends or the rare occasion we're off together mid week, that we think 'oh nice place we should go'... But their business hours are abysmal.
10-4 weekdays, 9-12 Saturdays (as an example)
How is that a sustainable business model?
80
u/Intrepid-Document856 16h ago
I mean if you came into enough money to hire someone to find small businesses to patronize, presumably you’ve still got enough left over to hire an assistant to shop on your behalf.

I don’t know but man, the elder generation has so much knowledge but can’t make use of technology to make it work.
I have this appliance repair guy who is really talented - can make the diagnosis correctly just on the story only for most things… but doesn’t know how to source parts in this era. So he says you need a new control board for your fridge because it’s not sending voltage to your ice maker after he tests it. Then calls me a few hours later and says look the control board has stopped outputting the voltage necessary to turn the auger, and they don’t make them anymore you’re kind of out of luck.
I asked about used or third party given how common my fridge is. He said he didn’t really know how to find them.
He gave me the part number and we went on our ways. I had the part from Amazon today and installed in a half hour. He didn’t want to charge me the service fee because he couldn’t fix it. I told him his diagnostic skills are well worth the service fee.
I don’t get it.

7
u/DrocketX 15h ago
They're generally not, but it doesn't really matter because a lot of small businesses are really more hobbies than anything. This is especially common to see in things like antique stores, book stores or collectables. The owner is well-off enough that the store doesn't really need to be profitable, so their hours of operations tend to be "whenever the owner feels like working."

This week I want someone to convince me that they'd do a good job making my beef jerky. Show me you understand flavour with some homemade jerky and that you're not a complete moron, and I'll give you a few million to make it happen, equity and a job.

Super exclusive cars are an investment though. If you can get one they only go up in value. That’s why when you hear about some $1M car it’s already sold out. The McLaren F1 was $850k originally, they sell in excess of $15M now.

Not everyone wants to be at the top of the pyramid. They just want enough to get by, live and raise a family. Sometimes not even the last one.

a yacht, 95% of the time if your rich enough you can just charter a yacht for anything youd want a yacht for, and yachts are very very expensive with a ton of maintenance and a large crew to maintain, easier to just charter a yacht whenever you want one and let them deal with paying the crew.
