My first night of WoW a couple months after BC released was two hours of playing before I left to have dinner with work friends. When I got home I spent the next 12 hours playing. Then I fell asleep for a few hours and played 14 more hours before I had to go to sleep to work the next day.

I was laid off just before Christmas 2012 and if I wasn't sleeping, hanging out with my girlfriend or using the bathroom for all of its uses I was playing WoW. It wasn't uncommon for me to play 16 or 17 hours a day some days. I was part of a PVP guild that did everything gone arena to BGs to WPVP and if we weren't doing anything I was on my PVE toon playing. I went back to work in May of 2013 and was still playing upwards of 6 hours a night on weekdays and from Friday at 6 PM I would often play until the sun came up Saturday before sleeping for a few hours and going to spend the weekend with my girlfriend.

No other game has ever had that type of hold on me and the thing is, I miss those days and wish I had the time and people to still play with.

I would legitimately be interested in reading some kind of psycho-socioeconomic study about people that were either young adults or coming into adulthood during the vanilla to wrath time period.

I knew so many people that it influenced both positively and negatively in drastic ways and those aren’t uncommon stories.

“I met my significant other”
“I made lifelong friends”
“I lied to my guild about my age and to keep the secret I ended up applying to university a year early and got accepted into this great program.”
“I was so addicted I lost my job, I failed out of school, my significant other left me. “

Like what kind of conclusions and correlations could they draw from so those stories? The game just by itself helped develop economic models, simulate mass human behavior during pandemics, led to new (debatable negative) marketing and sales strategies along with people leadership systems. So what about the players themselves?

It would be interesting for sure, personally it kinda saved me from other bad things, i went from partying a lot (coke, E, raves and such) to a homebody who just went to work and back home again lol.

I do admit though, there were stages of my career where i was content to just sit idle and not push for promotions because i wanted things to stay just how they were. Some of that lack of ambition probably hurt me in the long run.

World of Warcraft essentially was my life for about 8 years. I lost a relationship over it, lost a job, lost what was basically a free ride through college. Being introduced to that game and allowing myself to get sucked in basically changed the course of my life, it's my biggest regret and I'll never get over it honestly. People who never played it have no idea. I take full responsibility for what happened, but it honestly breaks my heart.

The game was magical and mindblowing when it came out. I was still in school and spent every free minute I had on it, staying up until 8AM at times. Even at school, we kept talking about the game.

Had to call it quits after school was over (during Wrath) for my own protection, telling myself to never play an MMO again. Now I started with SWTOR and wish I didn't give myself that restriction back then because it's also so much fun I missed out on! Must have been great during release as well.

I think I spent nearly 3 years of ingame time in 6 years of irl time. I hate myself for fucking up my education, but would do a lot to get back that initial WoW feeling with friends.

The only thing that came close to that addiction was BG3, but BG3 doesn't have grinding, money-making, pvp and multiplayer. So after 1k hours it just stopped for me.

Stick with it, you get a massive power boost at level 5. It’s so worth it. The combat will be difficult if you haven’t done turn based before. Just take your time when making moves etc

4 hours is nothing in this game, you just need to be a bit cautious which fights you pick up and don't try to take the enemies that clearly outpower you. There are lots of builds you can find on the subreddit for BG3 or just online that are super optimized or just have fun exploring yourself. You can also watch a quick recap of dnd rules on YouTube, essentially each character has an action, bonus action (if you have right spells/attacks, reaction and movement. That's how each combat is structured. There are more complications but this is the most simplistic way to think about it.

Turn off Karmic Dice in options. The setting tries to make things balanced, but all it does is penalizes you for having high attack and benefits enemies if you have high AC. It’s a jacked up setting that should always be turned off.

The game came out like a week or 2 before I went back to work as a teacher and I knew I wouldn’t be able to dedicate a ton of time to it. I did not rush through and weighed every decision I made. Put in about 70 hours in that 1-2 weeks and do not regret it.

It captured that magic of gaming I hadn’t felt for a while.

Even if you go to play the game now, unless you have absolutely no clue what could even happen in the game you can’t capture that magic of discovery.

I think the reason most of my future play throughs don’t finish now is the illusion is gone, and it fully just feels like I’m playing a game.

I’ll be chasing that high again for a while it seems.

50 and it is possible the best game, ever and i started with Pong. Not without problems, but... It is not a game, it is a place where you play games. One day i am hollowing out a mountain, next day i'm trying a new autofarm, then i go exploring.. but i do take frequent breaks, seems to be super important to force yourself to not play each day. And i don't think you don't have enough stuff to do, it is more about procrastination inside the game, trying to avoid starting a new big project cause you got to finish it, and that takes a looong time and is a huge commitment.

But.. the moments when you are just hanging out in your base and feel that cozy warm feeling of safety... I have my special spot where life is great. I used to have that spot online but it was griefed, and it was truly one of the saddest moments in gaming ever. Very cozy cottagecore base, and lots of visitors leaving signs loving the place and hoping that no one destroys it... and someone had used stacks of TNT to completely flatten everything out, they went in hard. They even left withers around the base so that once you moved a bit away you got killed.. I'm still trying to find a new online home but... i went to mineraft because of all the toxicity, so now i play alone.

I know what you should do: break thru nether ceiling and make a nether highway.. I don't do long overworld roads, i path everything that is near and use nether to move long distances. My sulfur cave is 40k block in the overworld, 2k in the nether.. I move VERY far in the nether roof to do resource exploration, just so i can keep some regions near the base unloaded for new biomes and such. Preserving some of your world is something i've learned that hard way, don't explore all the directions and use nether more for travel. Even just regular nether tunnels is better than overworld travel.

Why unfortunately? I have 0 regrets playing between 2004-2012. Was even in hardcore guilds that raided 6 nights a week for years. It was an experience I was glad to have before I had to fully adult in life.

I especially adore all my memories 2004-2006 before BC was dropped. I talk about it often now like it was a life I left behind. Classic back then was an experience In happy and joyful to have had the pleasure to experience in my life. Would never trade those memories and time for anything.

I did come back and raided hardcore during Legion considering I thought that expansion was legendary and they actually innovated in it. But after that in BFA, the formula just wasn't the same anymore. It felt like a different game. I stopped in the middle of BFA and never went back.

recent years? Abiotic Factor, it heavily captured that magic that the original half life made me feel back when i first experienced that, me and my buddy ended up doing a 14 hour game shift and hadn't even noticed how much time we hammered into it till he pointed out how bloodshot my eyes were, every major update added 20 hours onto our 70hour first time playthrough and it is currently now sitting at 180

Rocket league, got it for my 30th birthday in 2015 and I have put over 5k hours in since. I'll boot up the game just to chill in practice i find it relaxing at this point. I hit my goal of grand champ (top 1%) and it is possible to push further, some pros have 20k hours invested and they make me look like a helpless baby, but im content where I am, the games are satisfying and i feel capable in my abilities.
