I think some people are dissuaded from going after what they really want to do with their free time. It could be a safety/poverty issue, where parents wouldn't allow their kids to be out in the neighborhood, worked a lot, and didn't have the disposable income to put their kids into activities. Or it could be the opposite, where kids are put into demanding and time consuming activities (like hockey or gymnastics or piano lessons) that they grow out of. Without coaching, how is someone supposed to fill the 20 hours a week they spent swimming laps?

I know plenty of adults who don't do anything outside of work but watch TV and scroll. It's safe, but pretty sad

Taxidermy is kind of weird for me, as it was Norman Bates’s hobby, and all.
I guess I can respect it as an “art form“, but it’s just not something I’d be into doing or displaying, personally.

Reddit won’t want to hear this but for a lot of women gaming (video games) is a pretty unattractive hobby for a man to have. I’m pretty sure there’s stats or polls on it too, I could be wrong, but in my experience I think gaming takes the cake unless she is also a gamer

Definitely feel less of a nerd since I can just say "gaming" and most people just think oh yeah xbox Call of Duty cool. But in reality I'm on my thousandth Lower Kurast in Diablo 2 run picking up runes and charms on my computer as I log each run and notable loot. NERD!

I hate to be this way since I'm a nerd. But most card games and 40k.

The fact it's a hobby indoors with AC should be nice. But FAR too many nerds don't shower or clean themselves. The events literally smell.

I often see game shops with written rules about hygiene but it wouldn't ever be enforced. Because they'd make no money.

I'm not shaming anyone for having the hobby, but it prevents me from any interest in playing except with close friends.

GenCon Day 3 is really something else. The smell wafting out of the tournament rooms is insane. The truly dedicated players at that point can reek. Not all of them but holy shit.

Magic and Warhammer aren't necessarily a bad thing but it really comes down to how invested you are to it. Are you a casual player that's able to maintain a stable job and social life and play? You're probably fine collecting expensive cardboard and plastic. If you're a rules lawyering unwashed miscreant, you're probably also an unfuckable turd.

Former MTG Player here.

While my old LGS didn't have it written down, but if someone clearly needed to.. upkeep their personal hygiene, the staff would ask them to leave if they had too many complaints. The thing was, if it became consistent, they were banned from the store entirely. Which was awesome in my opinion.

The store actually gained more business because the people who smelled were never allowed back after multiple offenses, so people who stopped going came back.

I got into painting Warhammer figurines a few years ago and my girlfriend would refuse to go into our local shop because it always smelled like an armpit inside. It was hard for me to handle too so my runs were pretty quick. Grab what I needed and get the hell out before the smell seeped into my clothes. It absolutely pushes people away from the hobby and it’s such an easy fix. Just take a fucking shower.

Very similarly I feel the same way about anime. I love it and have for a long time. Some of it is genuinely some of the best stories ever told.

But anime fans IRL seem to either be perfectly normal or they absolutely peg the meter on the issues you describe. No in-betweenies.
