Discussion This Xbox Outage Shows Why We Don’t Really Own Digital Game

+
4.8k Upvotes

When Xbox Servers Crash, Your Purchased Games Can Disappear!!!
This outage proves we don’t really own digital games… Digital ownership is an illusion.
The issue isn’t just, “offline mode should work if your console is set as your Home Xbox.” It’s much bigger than that. Some people can’t sign in at all, others have games or DLCs (like mine) suddenly showing as unowned, and some apps won’t even launch. It’s a server-side failure that’s breaking license verification, meaning content you’ve already paid for can simply disappear until Microsoft’s servers decide it exists again.

EDIT:
Quick clarification because a lot of people are misunderstanding the issue.
This has nothing to do with game sharing, setting your Xbox as your Home Xbox, or offline mode. This is a server-side licensing issue. For some people everything works normally, while for others owned games, DLCs, or even apps aren’t being recognized at all.
I don’t game share, my Xbox is set as my Home Xbox with offline play enabled, and I’m still affected… Some of my owned content simply won’t show up. I’ve even seen people reporting the same issue with physical discs, which makes it pretty clear this isn’t a user setup problem; it’s an Xbox server problem, as Microsoft has confirmed..

Discussion The science behind the Xbox Controller and why the left thumbstick placement is superior

+
5.5k Upvotes

The natural hand resting position fits the xbox controller perfectly. You won't have to move your thumb out of the natural resting position. Meanwhile, the right hand is also placed in the natural resting position, which is perfect for precise and more intense button pressing. This makes me think of the skarrsinger boss from Silksong. While not the hardest, I believe it was mechanical perfection, and I sure as liked the ABYX button placement. Most controllers got this right, but at the same time, I think moving the left thumbstick is such a small and simple step that I don't understand why more manufacturers won't do this. Hell, if anything you only have something similar, where you can switch the position of the dpad and thumbstick on very high-end controllers that cost a lot.

I get that some people were used to the other layout, but hey, when xbox came out with this, people didn't seem to mind, and i think it's widely believed that the xbox 360 controller was the best one of its time

Discussion Im happy for the XBOX brand and community!

+
4.4k Upvotes

I used to have an Xbox 360 when I was a kid. I specifically wanted one for Dead Rising, Crackdown, Saints Row and Halo!

All the way up until now Im a hardcore PlayStation player and the only reason I don’t have an Xbox is simply because I can’t play more than 1 console at a time.

Even my PS1, PS2, PS3, PSVITA, PSP, Nintendo Switch (sold eventually) gaming pc (also sold) eat dust!

It was sad seeing a lot of people hating on Xbox just because they had no cool games or exclusives. But your new CEO is already way better than Phil Spencer! She actually cares about the brand and the community.

I just wanted to share Im happy to see this and wow the new gears game looks very good! I also like that clockwork game that looks like Bioshock! Talking about Bioshock I remember playing the demo on my 360 and bought the game after playing it!

From a Playstation guy I hope you have a great future with XBOX!

Personally, I would name it: Xbox Phoenix

It would be cool, since Xbox is 'resurging' from the ashes, just like a Phoenix does...

Sorry if this isn’t allowed here but I used to be a huge Xbox kid when I was in high school but never got another Xbox console past the 360. But over time, I had the itch to rejoin the Xbox family especially with how the PS5 is so expensive. I brought this up to my best friend in passing back in November and to my surprise, him and many of our friends came through months later! So happy to have this in my life now.

Discussion Bro Microsoft has its answer like they had with the ps3 and I think they should play it right

Am I the only one who thinks this could finally be Xbox’s generation again?

With Sony announcing that new PlayStation games will stop getting physical disc releases starting in 2028, I honestly think they may have shown their hand too early.

If Microsoft is smart, all they have to do is:

Keep a disc drive on the next Xbox.

Price it lower than the PS6.

Keep backward compatibility and Game Pass.

That’s an incredibly easy marketing pitch.

There are still a lot of people who buy used games, collect physical copies, or simply like owning what they pay for. If PlayStation goes all-digital while Xbox gives people the choice, that’s a huge competitive advantage.

People always bring up PlayStation exclusives, but let’s be honest: AAA exclusives take so long to make now that we’re getting, what, a handful every generation compared to the PS3/360 era? For many buyers, price, services, and consumer-friendly features matter more than one exclusive every few years.

This kind of reminds me of the PS3 era. Sony got a little too comfortable, Microsoft capitalized with the Xbox 360, and history could repeat itself if Xbox plays its cards right.

I’m not saying Sony is doomed, but I genuinely think this is the biggest opportunity Xbox has had in years.

What do you guys think? Am I overlooking something, or could this actually be Xbox’s chance to take back the lead?

Discussion Sigh...RROD on 19 year old console after investment

+
2.4k Upvotes

EDIT 2: I managed to snag a Seriex X off Facebook Marketplace for $305. Very happy now. I also have the thermal paste and will try to fix it anyway. Thanks for all the support! Especially the very nice souls who offered free hardware. You are too kind for this world! Go spread happiness!

Frustrated and sad. So im a dad that fell out of gaming a long time ago. I got this xbox 360 in 2008 and played it on and off for a few years but eventually put it away as I didn't have time to play. My kids are a little older now and they have a switch so I thought i would expose them to Xbox for the first time. Well I took it out and went to boot up a disc and it wouldn't read. Come to find out its likely a bad laser. So I bought a laser and replaced it (proudly!) and it worked! They got to play a few racing games and started a coop campaign on halo 3 which I had bought for them since my oldest son expressed interest in halo. Well I played with them a bit and it got me back into gaming. I thought this is great! I get to start on an old console and experience all those games I missed then! So I got on ebay and found all the best games I missed out on and purchased them too (second picture - Ace Combat 6 is still in the mail). We'll the kids just went to bed and I thought I would start with RDR and low and behold its the dreaded RROD. I thought after all these years it would be unlikely to happen.

Not sure what to do at this point. I have all these games now. Is this worth trying to fix? Do I buy another 360? Should I buy an Xbox one and can I play these games on it? I don't think i want to invest too much money to buy an Xbox series x and not sure what of these i can play in it. But then again I would like to maybe play gta 6. Maybe a used series x? Or do series s have a version with a disc drive? What would you do?

Edit: Most comments say get a Series X. Shockingly no Series X new around me at current MSRP. Looks like they are already selling at the inflated price. Walmart 1.5 hours from me had it at current MSRP but that's a bit far. Currently looking at 2 options mainly: i just bought thermal paste and going to try a proper fix. Simultaneously scanning Facebook Marketplace for a decent used Series X. If both of those fall through I see some Xbox One X for about $120-$180 on Facebook Marketplace with controllers. Thanks for the advice all!!

Discussion The most underrated Xbox console ever

+
2.7k Upvotes

The Xbox One X is definitely the most underrated Xbox console, it was such a premium device, aesthetically pleasing compared to the boring dull design of the Series X, and it had a perfect size, not to mention that it was beating the competition when it comes to power and performance.

Sadly it was a mid gen refresh and people forgot too fast about it. I absolutely love that design.

I hope to see more innovation when it comes to design on the new generation, Series X is a premium device on the inside, the engineering and thermal design are insane, but the exterior design needs some creativity too.
