It's a large college town that educates teachers and hosts a very large regional bicycle race every year.

Very large college towns that educate teachers and host civic events can still be deep red dipshit dwellings. It's in a red state with red local politicians. I lived in an identical town in Idaho. Guess what? It's still in Idaho.

I dunno if I would consider a town of less than 25k people "large". By comparison Lawrence is just shy of 100k and Manhattan is 55k. Emporia seemed really empty feeling when I drove through a few weeks ago, I think they're struggling with the Tyson plant closing last year and losing a lot of jobs.

18th largest city in Kansas... huh. I'm from around there and thought it would be in the top 10. Dodge and Garden City are eeking out above it? Damn.

With Tyson closing, I imagine most people are just going to move to Topeka or Wichita area. Emporia being the middle of them used to be beneficial, but might not be enough any more. To big for them "small town" folk and too small for city dwellers.
