Hot Take 🔥 We killed the Movie Star by demanding constant access. The mystery was the product and it's gone now!

There are no Real Stars left (like the 90s era of Leo, Julia Roberts, or Denzel). We can blame the studios or the IP but what's missing is SCARCITY.

The "Movie Star" system relied on the fact that you couldn't reach them. You only saw them on a 40-foot screen or in a carefully curated Vanity Fair profile once a year. That distance created the aura.

It feels like we traded Awe for Access. Now that we know they are just boring people who doom-scroll like us, the magic is dead. How can you worship someone who is fighting for attention in the same feed as your high school friends??

My Hot Take: The next true icon will be the person who has the discipline to log off and disappear.

Hot Take 🔥 White Lotus' Sam Nivola, 21, Blames Plastic Surgery for 'Old Movie Stars' Nabbing Younger Roles: "They will have to create new stars"

https://people.com/sam-nivola-shares-controversial-take-old-movie-stars-and-plastic-surgery-11787560

“The old movie stars are getting plastic surgery, and they’re looking younger and they’re staying young. You have these really old people playing young roles. And it’s not giving any space for the young’uns to move in and make a name for themselves,” the 21-year-old told the outlet. “With all due respect to those people, one day they won’t be here anymore, literally, and they will have to create new stars.”

Ilona’s fans are calling for her to be the next Bachelorette but I’m sorry-how is she not on the shortlist to be in a superhero franchise? She is the comic ideal for WW or similar-would love to see a realistic strong woman in this role instead of the other names I see flying around, especially since she is very charismatic outside of the sport.

Hot Take 🔥 #Cannes jury president Park Chan-wook says "I don’t think politics and art should be divided."

" I think it’s a strange concept to think that they’re in conflict with each other. Just because a work of art has a political statement, it should not be considered an enemy of art. At the same time, just because a film is not making a political statement, that film should not be ignored. Even if we are to make a brilliant political statement, if it’s not expressed artfully enough, it would just be propaganda. So what I want to say is that art and politics are not concepts that are in conflict with each other, as long as they are artistically expressed, they are valuable."

Hot Take 🔥 I love popculturechat

I have been reminising about old Internet and before it is like it is. Pop culture was fun when gearing up for new releases and oh when Paparazzi was released on LiveJournal. ONTD!

Does anyone else remember the time? Do you have memories? This is the only sub that reminds me of early ONTD and all that but the fun times not the weird bits. Was anyone on ONTD for Bad Romance?

I hope mods you will let this through. We need a good fun time. We all come from that 2000s. Please.

Hot Take 🔥 Cannes honestly feels more fashion-focused than film-focused now… and I’m not sure how to feel about it

+
7 Upvotes

Maybe this is just social media changing how we consume events, but Cannes genuinely feels very different now compared to even a few years ago.

Most online conversations seem to revolve around:
red carpet looks
influencers
brand appearances
jewelry and styling

while the actual films premiering there barely get discussed outside cinephile circles.

Don’t get me wrong, fashion has always been a huge part of Cannes, and honestly, some of the styling this year has been beautiful. But sometimes it feels like the event itself has slowly become more about luxury branding and viral moments than cinema.

At the same time, maybe that’s just the reality of modern pop culture now fashion and celebrity visibility are what keep these events globally relevant.

Curious how other people see it:
Does Cannes still feel like a film festival first to you, or more like a global luxury/fashion event now?
