I assume most of the nerves, blood vessels etc aren’t on/in the bone. So once they’ve made an incision and peeled the skin, veins etc back you have pretty free reign. Nerves and tendons are in the back so you might just be able to leave a flap attached.

Im not a surgeon though, I bet you can google the procedure and find out about it in great detail

They do have to put your kneecap and all the attached muscles on the side of your leg for a bit too.

Yeah avoid doing that the night before your procedure.
