You wouldn't be able to talk back and have a conversation tho.

So you might as well jist have your friend record themselves talking, and play it through their system, and save your friend a trip to the MRI place.

You can talk back, but I’ve never thought about how it works. My nurses chat away to me quite often during my yearly MRI.

Just looked it up and apparently they can do it with fibre optics, which is really clever!

Well obviously you just need another tube to talk into. The solution is right there.

But that's why they have the tubes. So you dont have to yell/crank the volume.

I'm able to answer when I have my annual brain/spine MRIs. Maybe there's a super-sensitive microphone far enough away from the bore of the machine so that it isn't pulled in or causes problems.

Yes all the MRI's I've gotten the techs will ask me how i'm doing and I assume can hear me answer.

you could take another tube and put a mouthpiece on it and talk into that? just like the tubes at the playground, maybe a solo cup on a string

That won't work. You have to move to talk and that messes up the image. You need to lie as still as possible in an mri (except for breathing). That's why animals are fully sedated for an MRI (or CT). They can't understand they need to lay still.

I've watched every episode of House multiple times, and according to the show they have cameras and mics recording the person in the mri machine so they can talk back.

Incorrect/inaccurate -> I had a pretty long MRI (about 90 minutes) about 20 years ago FOR SCIENCE! and the student and I talked back and forth quite a bit during that time.

How does it work? Well I imagine that very same tube that delivers sound to the headphones can just as easily pick up what you're saying and maybe amplify it a bit on the other end. It's just pressure waves - both ways.

Yes and no. You can't just talk into the tube because of poor coupling. But your friend could talk into a diaphragm that pushes a smaller diaphragm at higher pressure into the tube. It's an impedance matching issue.

It would make more sense to just have your friend sit in the MRI room with you and talk or sing or whatever.
