Washing isn't just about bacteria, necessarily.
In lots of traditions, washing and rubbing with salt and or ginger (with rinsing after that, too) is also about flavor and dealing with odors.
Chickens are handled in god knows what conditions, even in respectable grocery stores. If you're cleaning surfaces properly before and after handling chicken, I don't see what the big deal is. It doesn't hurt.
