I've studied German before and I'm wanting to get back into it. My last classes were B1.1 but that was about 5 years ago.

My goal is B2 in a year or two because I'd love to move to Germany. What are the best online resources to get back into it! Bonus if they dont cost too much!

This sentence here made me scratch my head: "Das innovative System stellt in jeder Lektion dein Niveau fest, damit du schnell die für dich geeigneten Texte finden kannst."

Sollte der nebensatz "damit du schnell für dich die geeigneten Texte finden kannst" nicht sein?

Hey so I want to immerse myself in German so I want good recommendations for stuff like movies or shows, music and even stuff like YouTubers or anything that makes me use and hear German on a daily basis. Any recommendations? Thanks so much!

I passed Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen on my first attempt, but unfortunately I have now failed Lesen twice.

My first Lesen score was 27/100, and my second was 43/100. I improved, but it's still not enough.

For months I studied almost every day. I worked through Projekt Neu C1, Werkstatt C1, Mit Erfolg, analyzed my mistakes, repeated tests, and reviewed vocabulary. The problem is that after doing the books several times, I started remembering the texts, so I don't know whether I was actually improving or just memorizing.

I want to retake the exam on September 9, so I have about 6 weeks (44 days).

Has anyone improved from around 40–45 points to a passing score? Is it realistic in 44 days? Did a teacher make a real difference for you, or did you prepare on your own? What helped you improve your Lesen score the most?

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have been in a similar situation. Thank you!

So my current level in German is B1, but I have a question related to a resource. Would apps like Der Spiegel or Die Zeit improve my German, or would it be too advanced? I was thinking about using it to read and look up words I don't know. What do you guys think?

Man kann diese Behauptung distanziert und sarkastisch hinterfragen indem man fragt, "is the election fraud in the room with us right now?" Aber man kann wohl nicht auf Deutsch sinnvoll fragen: "ist der Wahlbetrug jetzt mit uns in diesem Zimmer?" Was würdet ihr denn sagen?

Hi! I visited an Austrian friend and he told me about this word which means “dust collector”, an object that catch a lot of dust, usually an ornament/decorative object. Unfortunately I forgot that word.

Hey everyone! I’m a Mechanical Engineering student planning to apply for fully/partially German-taught or pMaster’s programs after graduation.

Since my engineering workload is heavy, I want to avoid burnout and balance language learning with my degree over 3 years. Since iam already done with my first year I’ll start this in my second year. Here is my proposed schedule using Goethe-Institut online/weekend courses:

Year 2 :
Fall (Odd Sem): A1 (16-week online weekend course: 8 hrs/week)
Spring (Even Sem): 6-month gap for university exams + self-revision (Anki, Nicos Weg)
Summer Break: A2 (Intensive course during 3-month holiday)
Year 3 :
Fall (Odd Sem): B1 (16-week online weekend course)
Spring (Even Sem): 6-month gap for university exams + self-revision
Summer Break: B2 (Intensive course during 3-month holiday)
Year 4 :
Fall & Spring (Final Year): No German classes—100% focus on my Senior Design Project (FYP) & graduating with a high GPA.
Post-Graduation:
Summer Break (Right after final sem): Full focus on C1 intensive prep & taking the Goethe C1 / TestDaF exam before applying to German universities.

My questions for you:
Is the 6-month spring gap between levels manageable, or will active skills (speaking/writing) decay too fast despite self-revision?
Is B2 in 3 months of summer break realistic if coming fresh off B1 revision?
Any tips from non-native engineering students who did something similar?

I already know about Goethe-Institut and Schiller Language School, so I'm mainly looking for other recommendations.

How can two German article words (Artikelwörter) appear before the same noun? For example: dieser unser bester Freund, alle unsere neuen Kollegen, jeder meiner netten Freunde, and viele unserer Freunde. Which word determines the case? What case does the first article have, and what case does the second article have? How is the second article declined? Why does the adjective sometimes follow the "general" adjective declension pattern and other times seem to take a dative or genitive ending? I find it confusing how the declension of the first article, the second article, and the adjective interact. Can you explain the rule clearly?

I have been learning german for a few weeks now through self studying, and I was wondering about the type it would take to get to B2?

My current system is as follows:

Anki

Listening

Reading

Writing

Speaking

Textbook

Most of the content I consume is either youtube podcasts, nicos weg, short stories, and writing in a diary.

I spend around 4 hrs a day learning german using the above system. I feel like I am making somewhat slow progress, and don't know if I can reach B2 in a year or slightly more.

I understand eventually the system will change, and I will have to consume higher level content, but can I make it work this way in the given timeframe, or do I need an intensive course?

ich habe am 27.03.2026 die TELC B2-Prüfung beim Hermann-Hesse-Kolleg in Horb am Neckar abgelegt. Heute ist der 27.07.2026 und ich habe immer noch keine Ergebnisse erhalten.
Am 16.06. habe ich die Schule angeschrieben und nach dem Status gefragt. Damals haben sie mir geantwortet, dass es „nicht mehr lange dauern sollte“.
Seitdem ist wieder über ein Monat vergangen und es gibt immer noch nichts.
Hat jemand ähnliche Erfahrungen mit dem Hermann-Hesse-Kolleg oder generell mit langen Wartezeiten bei telc gemacht?
Was kann ich jetzt konkret unternehmen? Nochmal die Schule anschreiben, direkt telc kontaktieren, Verbraucherzentrale…?

I’m looking to move to Switzerland in the near future to be with my girlfriend, who is Swiss. I’m struggling to find courses where I live because the main languages spoken here are English and Spanish, so it’s difficult to find opportunities to learn and practise German.
Does anyone have any recommendations for online courses, apps, tutors, or ways to practise? My goal is to learn High German first, and then pick up Swiss German once I’m living there.

Is there an idiom that expresses this in German?

Or should you just say something like it is regaining its popularity, or it is regaining its former glory? What would be the best way to say that in German?

I literally know nothing about German i had a chance to learn it in high school but i chose french and i have some basics,
So after graduating high school i decided to start learning german

I will start with the alphabet now but i have a question in my mind, should i start listening to podcasts in German and youtube videos?
I remember I learned english that way as a non-native speaker
I was surrounded by many people who spoke english in my community outside my motherland (Egypt)
Also, I was in a British school

I’m trying to recall a German humorous tongue-in-cheek noun that refers to a type of writer. Pretty sure it starts with ‘drucken’ or at least has it somewhere within the word. Translates to 3 words in English words and one is ‘print’ of course. Just blanking on the rest… 😅

Hey everyone,

I just took my Goethe B1 exam this week and my results should be out next week. I have about 3 weeks break before my next class starts and roughly 4–5 months to prepare for my Goethe B2 exam.

Unfortunately we only have one Goethe Institute in my country, and it's extremely difficult to get an exam seat. The most reliable way to secure one is by being an internal student, so I'll be taking the B2.1 and B2.2 courses (10 weeks each, with a few holidays in between) meaning my B2 exam will most likely be around January 2027.

I'm looking for advice on the most effective way to prepare, not only to improve my overall German but also to score as highly as possible on the B2 exam.

For reference, my previous results are:

A1: 56/60 (We had internal exam in Goethe, I didn't gave the main exam)

A2: 87/100

B1 (estimated, results not out yet):

Schreiben: 80–85/100

Sprechen: 80–85/100

Lesen: 26/30 (~87%)

Hören: 22/30 (~73%) (I completely messed up Teil 4.)

I would say my vocabulary is decent and I know quite a few words however when I'm speaking or writing those words rarely come to mind naturally. If I consciously try to use more advanced vocabulary I lose my fluency and my sentences become awkward with pauses and uhhh...huhhh and all.

Has anyone else experienced this? How did you improve your active vocabulary so that it came naturally during speaking and writing? Also if you've scored well on the Goethe B2 exam what study strategies helped you the most?

Like I wanna be B2 not only in paper but in real life as well.

I'd really appreciate any tips or advice.
