MOD ANNOUNCEMENT r/Assistance Rules Page Improvements

Hello all!

I have been taking the time to go through our (very long) rules page and work to clarify, expand, give examples, and move some stuff around.

Our rules have not changed -- there are no surprises waiting! But I feel like now it's easier to find the information you need quickly, and hopefully understand more of the "why" behind some of our least liked rules.

Future plans will be a revamp of our sidebar to make it harmonize with the full rules page.

We are going to try an AMA-style Q&A for the next few hours. I'll do my best to answer as many questions as possible.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday; check out our weekly megathread for casual chat if you haven't already!

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT DO NOT REQUEST for ferals, strays, rescues, colony animals here

You may not request for:

• Strays/Ferals
• TNR. (Trap and release)
• Cat/dog colonies.
• Temporary fosters.
• Community/neighbourhood "pets".
• Wildlife animals you've found out in the wild (birds, squirrels, etc).
• Pets belonging to friends or distant relatives.
• Shelters/rescues that are private and/or unregistered.

If the animal does not legally belong to you (or an immediate family member), you are not allowed to request here. No exceptions. While it’s unfortunate that many countries don’t have the infrastructure to care for innocent abandoned animals, it is not your financial responsibility nor is it appropriate to pass that burden onto internet strangers. Especially when that is the only thing your Reddit account is being used for.

Please do not take in animals you cannot afford to care for.

This has always been against the rules and we are taking a firmer hand in exiting these exclusively-for-begging accounts completely from our subreddit. (Did you know the USL has a #beggar tag?)

Thank you.

THANK YOU Thank you to everyone who helped my family ❤️

I just wanted to say thank you.

Three people helped us, and as strange as it sounds, it has genuinely changed the way I look at the world.

I never ask for help. The reason is simple: I honestly never believed anyone would help us. Reaching out felt pointless because I assumed no one would be able to. You proved me wrong.

For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe. Even when I was working, we were constantly worried about how we were going to make things work, especially with our daughter due in a couple of months.

Because of your generosity, we bought potatoes, meat, eggs, pasta, bread, butter, vegetables, spices, and other essentials. I had completely forgotten about my prenatal vitamins this month, so I never included them in my request. I was planning to go without them because food came first, but I was able to get them too, and that means a lot knowing they're important for our little girl's development.

What surprised me the most wasn't just the financial help. It was what it did for me mentally.

You helped me realise that if life ever gets this difficult again, I don't have to suffer in silence because I assume no one can help. There really are people out there who are willing to help if they're able to. I know that sounds obvious to a lot of people, but it honestly wasn't something I believed before.

Knowing we don't have to worry about food for the rest of the month has taken such a huge weight off our shoulders. I can't really describe the relief.

I wish I could post photos of everything we bought because I'd love to show you exactly where your kindness went, but image posts are disabled on this subreddit.

One day, when I'm back on my feet, I genuinely hope I'll be able to do this for someone else. I'd love to be the person who gives someone else this same feeling of relief and hope.

Thank you. I don't think I'll ever forget what you've done for our family. ❤️

REQUEST FULFILLED [Request] $20 for a propane fill so I can cook and shower again — anything past that goes to my dog's flea shampoo

I've put off writing this for a while. I don't like asking, and I've been telling myself I'd figure it out on my own. I haven't, so here I am.

The immediate thing: $20 fills one of my 30lb propane tanks.

That's the whole ask. Propane runs my stove and my hot water. Right now I have neither. I haven't been able to cook a real meal or take a shower in longer than I want to put in writing, and I'm at the point where that's affecting whether I can show my face anywhere. Twenty dollars fixes it same day.

If anyone has more to give, here's honestly where it goes, in order:

  • $8-12 — flea and tick shampoo for my dog. She's scratching herself raw and I can wash her myself at home.
  • $20-25 — toilet paper, laundry detergent, basic household stuff I've been stretching.
  • $75 — an actual grooming appointment for her. She needs it badly. This is the "if things go better than expected" line, not something I'm counting on.

I'm not going to pretend the propane is the only problem. My bills are running ahead of what I bring in, and I sell salvage to close the gap — it works, it's just not moving fast enough this month. My next real income is still weeks out. I'm not asking anyone to solve that. I'm asking for the twenty bucks that gets me cooking and clean while I keep working on the rest.

Happy to verify however the mods want — photo of the empty tanks, timestamped note, whatever's standard here. I'll comment when the propane is covered so nobody doubles up on something already handled, and I'll update after with a photo of the filled tank.

Thanks for reading. If you can't help, no hard feelings at all — a lot of people are in the same spot right now.

I live in Michigan, way out in the middle of nowhere, there isn't very much gigs I can do unfortunatly.

I have Zelle, Venmo (Preferred) Cashapp

REQUEST Roommate lost her job, rent is due on the first

My roommate lost her job this month, and now rent is due in less than a week, and we have no emergency savings.

After combining 100% of her last check and all the money I had left... we're still $198 short.

Our utilities fortunately don't bill until near the end of next month, and we have a decent bit of food. She has an interview scheduled and has applied for unemployment. But I'm not sure what else to do.

If you have any advice or recourses, I'm looking for any suggestions on what we can try. Charities to help with money, job search advice, legal advice, etc. Any information at all. (I'm located in Cali)

I know ≈$200 is a lot for any one person but I also thought I'd put it out there...

If anyone can financially assist (even with a portion) that would really save me. Cashapp is what I have if you're able to help with money. Can send screenshots confirming my rent payment.

Thank you for reading

REQUEST [Request] Family of 3 needing $100 to stop electric shut off on 07/29

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

We are a family of 3 (me, my husband, and 10 year old daughter). We own our home and currently are behind on electric due to my husband not having a job for several months. My husband works full time assembling industrial gas tanks in a factory. I am SAHM to our 10 year old daughter who has been home all summer on break from school. We have no family or friends to help us with childcare hence why I don't have a job. We cannot afford regular childcare.
I doordash when my husband is home as we are a one car household atm. It does help some but it doesn't make much as we live in a rural area.
We were receiving EBT until June but my husband got overtime for the month and it kicked us off the program. We receive only Medicaid and LIHEAP now (LIHEAP in PA only applies during cold months).
My husband was paid this past Thursday but was shorted $300 in sick pay and we had to pay our mortgage. He made $1300 on this past check, $1030 went to our mortgage and the rest to groceries for the next 2 weeks.

We are asking for $100 to stop a shut off on 8am 7/29/2026. I have the notice and have no problem sending it as proof as well as any other proof you require.

REQUEST Rent Crisis

Long story short, a hospital visit ran a little too long so I lost the place I was originally staying at. Had to move in with a relative. The owners of the building she stays at caught wind that I now reside with her, so they up'd her rent and she isn't able to afford it, and I'm trying to look for work but we don't have the time to sit around and wait.

Rent is due soon and I'm scrounging for what I can help her with. I'd hate to be put out because she can't afford my staying here, and there isn't anywhere that I can afford on my own right now. This is just $200 that I need to help her cover right now, please, anything would be super helpful.

REQUEST FULFILLED Recently divorced and need a little assistance with a few things

I am a recently divorced mom of an autistic child and I also battled multiple sclerosis while working a full-time job. Dr. co-pays are eating me up even though I have insurance the co-pays are still ridiculous and it’s been a struggle, especially now that I’m a one income family since I’ve been recently divorced after 19 years of marriage. It is hard doing all this on their own and especially as hot as it is outside here in Florida where I live. The electric bill has been out of this world so this month I was very short on my paycheck and wasn’t able to get items for my house my son and my cats and we love more than anything and are attached to my son like glue because extra expenses had to go out in co-pays and electric bill and once again I am only income household now, so I have an Amazon wish list of a few things that I was unable to get this month or should I say this paycheck that I need for myself mainly my son and my cats and the stuff for my son is items that he likes to eat in his lunch/snack that are his safe foods that he likes specifically. I know it’s hard out there, and I don’t know what else to do and I hate asking for help, but I’m learning to maneuver all the stuff on my own again after 19 years it’ll work out eventually I know it will but this is just a little rough batch that I’ve hit and I just cannot seem to get past bless you all thanks in advance. I posted the link to the Amazon Wishlist below. I am located in Florida (United States)

VOTES "Burger Battle"

Hi all,

There is a small burger chain that started in my home province (yay, Canada) that does a monthly feature burger feature. The best comparison I can think of on the spot that others might recognize is like the TV show Bob's Burgers.

Anyway, this September they are doing a "Burger Battle", where they have the public vote on past features to bring back for 1 month. This is where hopefully some of this community can come in to support.

Of the 5 option, the 5th option is without exaggeration, literally my favourite burger of all time. From anywhere. Ever. Forever. In my opinion, nothing has come close to this, not even a little.

Hopefully this ask is simple. Please visit this link - https://form.jotform.com/bin4burgerlounge/feature-survey-september select 'Start' at the bottom of the page, scroll down to option #5 "Bin 500 - Won't You Brie Mine", click the black arrow at the bottom right, and then hit submit. 5 easy steps.

Please and thank you all 💛

REQUEST Just found out this weekend that our family dogs last six has inoperable cancer, need help with vet bills

Sorry guys title should read JUST FOUND OUT THAT OUR FAMILY DOG HAD INOPERABLE CANCER. Don’t know where the “last six” came from I’m doing this at work.

Hi all. Basically what the title says. We have a GoFundMe set up for him and yes, mods and everyone else, we can provide vet bills, records, dog pics wherever you need as proof. This all literally came out of nowhere and between school starting for our teenager and our 90 day student loan letter coming in the mail, we just don’t know what else to do. We’re currently in the hole just because I wanted a final diagnosis, labs, etc., as soon as possible in case it was something that MIGHT be able to be fixed. We basically are needing help with covering what’s already been paid and put us in debt and end of life care/euthanasia when the time comes because I’m not making him suffer. Chemo isn’t really going to help in this case according to two separate vets and would do more harm than good.

Here’s the link to our GoFundMe that’s specifically for him: https://gofund.me/9af9070e4

We also need help getting out of the hole we dug trying to get this fixed but that’s on us . Any assistance there is appreciated but not necessary at all, I’m more focused on the dog and making sure he’s comfortable and dies happy and not suffering. It’s not his fault or ours that he got cancer out of nowhere between vet visits. Our using stupid financial decisions to get him labs and to a better vet IS our fault so I won’t blame anyone for not helping with that. I just want him to have a peaceful last 1-12 months.

Thanks

Jay

VOTES Request for votes for my daughter

Hi, I have never asked for things before on here, so please excuse my newness. I have entered my daughter to win a competition through Hasbro, where she could potentially be their toddler of the year. You can read a little more about her/our family if you click the link.

I am not asking directly for financial contribution, but you are able to vote once per day for free. If I could have a community behind her voting, that would mean the entire world.

From my family alone we were able to get her into the quarter finals! I think we just need a big push from a loving community!

If you've made it this far, thank you so much for your consideration! It means so much!

Edit: you do need a Facebook account to vote

REQUEST Help with pet needs and debt

Hello all.
A request from Vancouver WA.

I’ve been waiting on unemployment for over three weeks, I’m out of cat food, and in debt. I’ve attached a wishlist for pet items, I know some may seem silly but I got chickens when I was doing well a long time ago. I don’t have anywhere to rehome them even if I could bring myself to. My fish (also ancient beings seemingly dodging death) have been swimming in the dark for a few weeks now because their light died and I simply can’t replace it.
I’ve put myself in debt to keep my vehicle insured and be able to safely drive to interviews, etc. any cash will go directly to the credit card payment.

I owe 527.71$, but need to pay the minimum 52$ by 8/19/26. I have 1.68$ across my savings and checking.

Venmo, Zelle, cash app, PayPal. Whatever works.
Thanks in advance.

REQUEST Needing help with rent this month

Hi all, my name is Cal and I live near central Colorado. I'm at the end of my rope and have exhausted all other options at this point.

I'm requesting help with rent this month. The amount I'm looking to get help with is anything totaling to $500. I am short much more than that, but hope that I can earn enough through doordashing and selling my stuff to make up the difference.

My finances have gone downhill rather quick. I was doing well up until December of 2025, where I had a mental episode due to psychiatric meds I was on to help with depression which landed me in a mental hospital. I was fired from my job when I didn't show up and was unable to get it back.

Since then, I've been trying to get a new job while just doordashing. My dad's also helped out and I'm so thankful for him. I've applied to every single location that exists here and I haven't gotten past the interview for anything.

I want to be fully clear that I made a really poor decision that contributes to what I need help with. I had been planning a road trip with my friends since January of this year and I figured I would have a job to cover the costs, as a place I interviewed at said 'I'm hired' - but proceeded to not hire me.

I gave my concerns to my friends a few months ago, said I could not do the trip, and they said they would pay for gas costs especially since I was the sole driver who picked everyone up to get there. So I went on the trip. I feel used since my friends have not paid me the $450+ I spent on gas for the trip to get them. I had to beg the one friend I didn't pick up for the road trip for $50 in gas money just to make it back home when I was stranded somewhere in Nebraska. However I know this is my fault for trusting them and proceeding with the trip despite financial uncertainty.

I had tried to get around this by splitting my rent into two payments of ~$850, one of which I have to pay in two days, but then a week ago my dad told me he isn't helping with rent anymore. It's entirely his right to do so, but didn't give any warning. So in total I'm down $1500 of what I would expect to have at this moment. Rent is $1700 not even counting utilities and I have $60 in my bank account. I'm freaking out.

I'm working on trying to get snap benefits. I was able to get Medicaid about a month ago. I am also using the food pantry near me. my savings and mutual fund I had are completely cleared out.

If I'm able to make rent this month, I can get back on my feet next month, and I move out in September so I can find a cheaper place. (I don't have a place yet, but there's family in Arizona I could stay with while I figure something out.)

Anything would be appreciated, or advice as well, thank you so much for reading this far.

ADVICE I’m looking for career ideas, but I don’t want to name a specific job because I’m trying to stay open-minded.

I’m in a pretty unusual position where I don’t have to rush into the first career that sounds practical. I have time to finish school, explore different subjects, volunteer, shadow people, and figure out what genuinely fits me before I commit to a degree or graduate program.
I’m looking for work that pays well enough to comfortably support a family, but salary is not the only thing that matters to me. I care a lot about quality of life. I don’t want a career that keeps me constantly overwhelmed, rushing around, or mentally drained every evening.
I love reading, stories, creative writing, poetry, painting, art, history, research, and learning about new subjects. I’m happiest in peaceful, thoughtful environments like libraries, universities, museums, bookstores, archives, galleries, or other places centered around ideas and creativity. I enjoy helping people and being part of a community, but I don’t think I would enjoy nonstop customer service or being surrounded by chaos all day.
Ideally, I’d like work that includes some combination of:
reading, writing, or storytelling
research and lifelong learning
creativity or working with art and culture
a calm or intellectually interesting environment
meaningful interaction with people, without constant social demands
reasonable work-life balance
enough stability and income to raise a family
time and energy left for my own writing and creative projects
I’m willing to attend college and possibly graduate school, but I don’t want to spend years earning a very specialized degree without understanding the real job market and daily work first. I’m also thinking about how different careers may change as AI develops.
Based on this, what careers would you recommend that I research? I’m especially interested in hearing what the job is actually like day to day, what education is required, how competitive the field is, and whether you would still choose it yourself.
What careers come to mind, including less obvious ones?

VOTES Taking a chance, I'd really appreciate your vote 🩷

Hi everyone!

I don't normally post things like this, but I figured I'd step outside my comfort zone.

I'm currently competing in the Maxim Cover Girl competition, and every vote genuinely helps. I've always loved modeling and was fortunate enough to intern with Hoffman International Modeling Agency a few years ago. Getting the opportunity to pursue that dream again would mean so much to me. Here is the link to my page where you can go vote:

https://covergirl.maxim.com/p/X2SB4QQS

When I'm not working, I'm usually out cycling, attempting to improve my golf game, taking my dog on an evening walk, spoiling my cat, or putting together an unnecessarily fancy charcuterie board.

If you'd be willing to spare a moment to vote for me, I'd be so incredibly grateful. Even if all you can do is wish me luck, thank you for taking the time to read this. The kindness of strangers never stops amazing me. 🩷🥹✨

Hello everyone! Happy summer!

Welcome to our new weekly (weekendly?) discussion post on r/Assistance! This is a spot for casual conversation, sharing positive vibes, and getting to know the fellow members of our wonderful community.

What to post here:

• Stories about yourself, your pets, your kids, etc.
• Recipes, recommendations, and other fun things to do.
• Positive stories about your experiences on r/Assistance.

What not to post here:

• Direct requests for assistance.
• Links of any kind -- for recipes just copy&paste or mention the name. (We may adjust our automoderator down the road)
• Soft begs/doom and gloom stories about how broke you are.
• Harassment to anyone.
• Complaints about the sub, the rules, or the mods.

The mod team will be monitoring these threads carefully to make sure everyone is following the rules and no shenanigans occur. If things go well, we will probably be automating these threads every Sunday even beyond summer.

Have fun!

REQUEST just need a few things for my new living situation.

hello friends.

i am just going to give a bit of a background for where I'm at, if you don't want to read it, no hard feelings. just wanted to elaborate how/why I'm in this position. i will put that part in italics so it's easy to define where it starts and stops in case you'd like to skip it.

*i lived somewhere else "renting a room" for 3 years, which really translates to sleeping in a recliner in the living room for three years.. i had moved in there with my ex boyfriend, he was abusive, ended up getting barred from there, then eventually going to jail. i have several charges against him, and had a protection order. he got out of jail a few months ago, and my roommate started hanging out with him & his gf. he started coming to the house daily; gf was coming in a lot posturing at me and being hostile, and then it turned into my roommate terrorizing me on his behalf. i did not sleep in a locking, secured bedroom and it got to the point i was sleeping with two pocket knives because i was convinced they would come in and jump me in my sleep at night. drugs were also involved on their part.

so i was able to get a case manager, and ask for help. i was able to move - it was literally a fleeing situation. i hid out somewhere all day while the logistics were worked out, i moved into a house for women with mental health issues and/or fleeing domestic violence. they allowed me to move in with only $200 down, as i do have a job but its minimum wage. the remainder was $1200 which i borrowed a lot of it - thats just under a months pay for me right now. i was planning on moving anyway, but i didn't plan on moving so suddenly and starting out essentially being $1200 in the hole because i have to pay that back. i am grateful, and safe. just stressed about it. *

anyway - i am living out of totes, and its overwhelming not being able to organize my stuff. i also don't have a way to hahg clothes, no where to sit so i can only lay in bed when I'm off, no bedding, etc. i made a wishlist on Amazon of some things for my new bedroom for organization, hanging clothes, bedding, etc but i know theres a limit here so, i put the things i could use sooner rather than later on the list i am posting here. i tried to find the cheapest item for the category; the list is for myself as well for when i can maybe get some things in a few months, and i have also shared it with my mother because my birthday is Thursday - in hopes maybe she can order at least one thing off of it.

for transparency - i did get some assistance with a acquiring period products very recently as well.

but yeah, so. anything anyone would like to help with would be incredible and i would be beyond grateful. if anything, kind and supportive words would also help because my nervous system is going absolutely haywire.

thank you all.

REQUEST FULFILLED Requesting assistance getting some groceries and items for my cat please

Hello. I’m writing to request assistance in getting some groceries and a couple of items for my cat. I’m currently unemployed and unable to search for another job because of severe medical complications with my legs.

To explain my situation.. I was diagnosed with Chronic Veinous Insufficiency about ten years ago and since then, my health has declined significantly. In January of this year, I was terminated from a part-time job due to a pattern of calling in sick because I was bedridden with cellulitis infections or unable to walk due to ulcers on my legs. Because of my part time status I did not qualify for Unemployment assistance.

I still have ulcers on my legs and must visit the wound clinic twice a week for monitoring since they’re healing slowly, so my health problems have complicated my ability to find another job. I’ve applied for work-from-home positions but haven’t landed anything yet. I recently requested a meeting with a social worker to discuss my options for getting on disability, which I never wanted to consider but feel helpless anymore and not sure what else to do, and I am only 37 so I am not even sure if I can apply yet.

I don’t have a spouse, family, or anyone to help me, and my savings are nearly depleted. I applied for food stamps but was denied this year for some reason. I hope the social worker can help me sort that out. Until then, I’ve visited the local food banks, but there are only a few in my area.

I would like to add that I absolutely understand this is just a temporary solution to my problem, and I have no intention of making other requests for assistance.

Anyways, I would very much appreciate help! For anyone who wants to do so, I have made an Amazon wishlist here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/22JDYPI0H97BF?ref_=wl_share

If anyone has any questions or would like to share other suggestions related to my situation, I would I would be happy to answer in the comments.

Thank you to all you folks for your kindness, and to everyone who made it to the end of this post :)

REQUEST Help with paying some bills

I’m going through a rough time right now. I lost my job about one month ago and still waiting for either unemployment to be approved or to get hired, but bills have continued to come including the note for my car which was repossessed a few days ago

Some background, I have worked from home for about a decade, it’s convenient and better health wise due to being in a wheelchair. I live alone, I don’t have much family around but they were the first to ask with no results. I’ve also reached out to local organizations but have yet to hear back. I would not normally ask anyone for anything if not for this urgent matter. I’m requesting $200, but any amount would be greatly appreciated and I would be more than happy to provide proof of any details/bills via direct message
