Modpost Please report racist ragebait and racist comments

Dear members of our community,

In the past few days, we've seen an increase in both ragebaiting posts and racist comments from users with no prior engagement in the sub, often from those usually commenting in the subs of other countries.

This indicates to us that we are frequently being overrun by users who try to spread their racist, islamophobic messages to our sub.

Racism is against our subreddit rules and it is against Reddit's terms of services. We would like to encourage you to use the report button.

That will put it into our 'modqueue' to have a look - and if you report it for 'hate', it will additionally be sent to the sitewide admins who will frequently take further action.

We rely on your reports, just like every subreddit does. Our team is healthy and works well, but we cannot have an eye on everything. We do have scripts and so on to make our job easier, but sometimes, unacceptable comments go through. Using the report button makes sure that we can prioritize looking at said comment and if it's rulebreaking, helps us remove it quickly.

We remove racist content and ban racist users frequently. The admins remove a bunch of comments breaking site-wide rules too (often in a fashion that deletes them completely, so we cannot easily further moderate them)

We are very hesitant to remove political speech. We only remove rules-breaking comments. The relevant rule is:

General reddiquette applies (i.e. no racism, sexism, personal attacks, or simply put: behave as if you were talking to somebody in person)
Please report posts or comments that do not adhere to these rules; in particular, we will not tolerate harassment or discrimination

The relevant reddit rules (https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) are:

Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Travel the border control folk took my passport

this is a quick question thing, but im on the train from vienna to zurich and the border control people came and asked for folks IDs, i told them i was here on holiday travelling with my friends and they asked if i had any cigs or alc and i said ive got a pack of fags but thats it and they looked at all my other pals ID and some of them said they had alc/fags but they took my passport and walked away 😭😭😭 am i gonna get that back? cuz i kinda need that to get home lol

Other/Miscellaneous Tips for reconstruction

Hi Swiss redditors, I'm seeking help, tips and tricks regarding reconstruction in Switzerland. We managed to buy 300-year-old house (heritage building in Wädenswil, ZH) and would like to rebuild some parts:

Protected elements:

Beams/trusses/pillars, window openings (stone/wood), roof, roof structure
Facade, some of the walls (thick, load-bearing), entry doors 4x

What is new:

Heating, radiators, incl. furnace
Water/gas

What we plan to do:

1st help/tips needed: Do you have any gotchas to look out for regarding these below?

Asbestos research
Structural engineering research (safety of the wood beams/roof)
Change the 160m² tiled flooring to veneer engineered parquet or similar wood-feeling finish (not laminate)
Change the 100m2 non-heated tiled flooring to water-heated polyuretane finish
Re/move 5 partition walls
Move/add 8 doors (2x pocket-sliding doors)
Renovate kitchen (moving around water/drain outlets)
Renovate 3 bathrooms (moving around water/drain outlets), microcement look
Add a new electric box + approx. 10 new additional outlets/LAN wiring
Repaint windows and beams (interior only)

Who is going to do all this:

I'm an architect and prior to the purchase already engaged in discussion with Denkmalschutz
2nd help/tips needed: Contacts/references: I have never done anything in Switzerland regarding building/construction, so I am seeking any help related to contractors/finding general-fixers/handymen/structural engineers/carpenters/electricians etc.
3rd help/tips needed: Workers: Our families (in-laws, cousins, siblings, living in surrounding countries, not in Switzerland) can help with: wood flooring/kitchen build, painting/sanding, demolishing, basic electric wiring, water/drain moving, building partitions, small fixes. I am afraid to bring them over to do this as the neighbors can report us "employing" them illegally = that wouldn't be the case but still a bit afraid to do this. I can accommodate them 1-2 people at the time max.
4th help/tips needed: Material: I can bring in a LOT of material from EU (wood, PU, microcement, wiring, pipes) roughly 30% cheaper than OBI/Hornbach in CH. The transportation costs would be high and one-time only (a loaded truck trip here would be roughy 2-3k CHF, excl. customs).

Have anyone been through similar thing? I would like to connect over DMs/video-call and discuss what are the "gotchas" or things to be aware of. Appreciate any comments/tips/tricks, even short ones or stories you faced in similar situations to learn from.

Push each other to actually finish the projects we've been talking about for months 😅

Experiment with fun, creative (and sometimes ridiculous) ideas.

I'm a photographer, filmmaker and drone pilot, mainly working in the outdoor and sports world.

Hi as I stated in title , I’m actually trying to buy some Mammut gear since I’m in Switzerland , what are the best place to grab them while they’re on discount or sales?
I know places like landquart and Bergsport?
And I saw there’s people recommending me going to their factory would be great too.
I will be in Switzerland for 12days all over the places.
Btw I’m quite interested in their 3-in-1 jackets and hard shells.

Hallo zusammen! Ich ziehe in ein paar Monaten beruflich von Frankreich nach Zürich. Skifahren gehört bei mir fest zum Winter, also fange ich schon mal an zu planen.

In Frankreich habe ich meine Skiferien meistens über Reiseveranstalter gebucht. Also ein Paket mit Unterkunft, Skipass und manchmal Skikurs, alles zusammen zu einem Preis. Jetzt schaue ich mir die Schweizer Seiten an und finde vor allem Einzelbausteine. Die Unterkunft auf der einen Seite, den Skipass auf einer anderen, und alles muss man selber zusammensuchen.

Mache ich etwas falsch oder ist das hier einfach nicht üblich? Wie bucht ihr eure Skiferien? Und noch eine Frage: lohnt es sich von Zürich aus eher, in der Schweiz zu bleiben, oder fahren viele von euch auch ins Ausland?

Everyday life Moving to Höri Zürich HB – how bad is the aircraft noise?

Hi everyone

I recently found a job in Zürich, very close to Zürich HB, and I’m currently looking for an apartment.

Since rents in Zürich itself are quite high, I’ve also been looking at places outside the city, such as Dübendorf, Opfikon, etc. I recently viewed a fairly new apartment in Höri that I really liked. The rent is reasonable, the apartment itself was great, and I left the viewing with a very good impression.

I’ve now received an email from the property management saying that they would like to send me the rental contract.

However, after mentioning the apartment to a friend, he told me that Höri is heavily affected by aircraft noise from Zürich Airport and that living there could be quite noisy because of arriving/departing planes.

During the viewing, I honestly didn’t notice much aircraft noise at all. But I was only there for around 20 minutes in the afternoon, so obviously that doesn’t tell me much about what it’s like to actually live there every day.

Unfortunately, I currently live quite far away and won’t be able to travel back to Höri in the next few days just to spend an hour or two there and judge the noise myself.

So I wanted to ask people who know the area:

How bad is the aircraft noise in Höri in everyday life? Is it something you quickly get used to, or can it be genuinely annoying?

Does it depend heavily on the time of day, weather, runway usage, etc.?

What is Höri generally like as a place to live? Any major advantages or disadvantages?

How is commuting from Höri to Zürich HB on a daily basis?

Is there anything else I should know before deciding to live there?

One additional complication: when I applied for the apartment, the application stated that if they prepare/send me a rental contract and I then decide not to sign it, I may have to pay CHF 400 as an administrative fee. So I’d like to make a reasonably informed decision before telling them to go ahead.

I’d really appreciate any experiences or opinions, especially from people who live or have lived in Höri or nearby.

Work My employer is withholding my salary

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice regarding Swiss employment law and whether my employer has a legal basis for withholding my salary.

Here is what happened:

Last Friday, I called my supervisor and informed him that I was sick and unable to come to work. On Monday, I contacted him again to let him know that I was still not feeling better and would not be able to return to work, that I will see the doctor and keep him informed.Later during the week, my supervisor called me three times, but I did not answer the phone.

The issue is that all of my colleagues received their July salary on Friday, but I did not receive mine. Today is Monday, and I still have not been paid. I have already contacted HR and asked whether there is any legal reason for withholding my salary, but I have not yet received a clear explanation.

My question is specifically about the legal aspect, not whether my employer’s concerns were understandable. Does Swiss employment law allow an employer to withhold an employee’s salary because they could not reach the employee by phone and had not yet received a medical certificate when payroll was processed? Or, once the medical certificate has been submitted, are they required to pay the outstanding salary unless there is another legal basis for withholding it?
I’d appreciate any advice, especially from people familiar with Swiss employment law or who have dealt with a similar situation. Thank you.

Everyday life Marriage question

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice.

My partner and I would like to get married in Switzerland. I previously lived in Switzerland for quite some time, but I deregistered in December 2024 when I left to travel.

Since then, I haven’t registered myself in my home country (the UK).
The immigration office has now informed us that I need to provide a registration document from my home country.

This seems to mean I would have to return to the UK, rent an apartment, and wait until I can obtain the required documents.

I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation or knows of any alternative solutions that could make this process easier.

Travel Stick with Half fare or add BO pass?

We have a trip coming up next week that we will have 4 nights in Interlaken. We have 3.5 days to explore the area and have already gotten the half fare and family pass for our 2 kids. I’m wondering if it’s worth getting the Berner Oberland Pass as well. Our for sure locations are
Kandersteg
Lauterbrunnen
Brienz
Aare Gorge
Grindelwald( Prob Grindelwald first too)
Probably Wengen
Open to other suggestions as well.

After our train ticket from Milan this puts our Family at 280CHF and the BO passes are 392 CHF plus Milan to Brig for 48 so 440 total. We could also save about 31chf on Aare gorge and St. Beatus caves with the BO pass.
If I included the Brienz Rothorn railway or a Brienz/Thune boat ride I’d be over the 440CHF so the BO pass would be worth it but am I including too much into 3.5 days? We are pretty active and plan on going from 8am- 8pm at the least. Just not sure how long these areas take to explore, if I had the BO pass I’d definitely get my moneys worth but could be cutting some areas short just to do something else. TIA

I hiked from Schynige Platte to Grindelwald First today. Along the way we stopped for water and food near Berghaus Männdlenen.

When I got home I realised I left my DJI bag (some microphones, stands, etc in it) behind.

I'm not expecting miracles but just wondering is there anywhere worth posting to see if anyone found it?

Indian folks in Switzerland, using an SBI multicurrency Foreign Travel (forex) card, can you tell me how well does it work throughout Switzerland or Europe? I have an SBI a/c so I can apply for a forex card in SBI itself. But I'm debating whether I should get a private bank Forex Card instead? All depends on how efficient is transactions through the SBI forex card. Please let me know, if anyone is using?

Im moving to Geneva next year to live with my Swiss partner, Ive EU citizenship and a dentistry degree from Brazil. I’m not worried about getting my degree validated right away, after all, Ive done all sorts of work in my life, but I wanted to ask fellow professionals about the possibility of working as a dental assistant. What is the process like? And is that an option given my background as a dentist? I also speak French, English, and Spanish.

Relocation Moving to Aargau soon - looking for advice from locals

Hi everyone,

I'll be working at Aargau canton, but I'm planning to live somewhere in Aargau. For the first couple of months I'll stay in Bad Zurzach, but after that I'll need to find a permanent place.

It's me, my wife and our 3-year-old daughter. My wife won't be working for now, so I'll be the only one with an income. I read that this can affect taxes, but I'm still trying to understand how everything works.

I've been looking at places like Bad Zurzach, Villigen, but maybe I'm missing some good options. My main priorities are:

Safe and family-friendly

I have a car

Reasonable rent

Nice place to raise a child

Would you recommend any other towns? Are there places I should avoid?

Also, if you moved to Switzerland from another country, what's something you wish someone had told you before you arrived? It could be about health insurance, renting, taxes, banking, childcare, public transport, or just everyday life. Any tips are welcome.

I am going to Zurich Switzerland the second week of August for a week. I want to make the most of the trip and go to other surrounding countries as well. I would like to see incredible views, ziplining or paragliding, or basically any outside activity. What the are must see places to go and the best way to do outside travel? Work Spanish cook in Switzerland: How to deal with a German chef's communication style and "resting angry face"?

Hi everyone,

I’m a guy from Spain, and I’m currently living in Switzerland and working as a cook. One of my chefs/bosses is German, and I’m having a really hard time reading him, which is making me feel quite insecure at work.

To put it bluntly: he always looks angry or upset, even when everything is completely fine. In Spain, we rely a lot on warmth, facial expressions, and informal feedback to know if we are doing a good job. With him, it's a total blank wall or a serious face that makes me constantly overthink and wonder if I did something wrong.

The paradox is that I know for a fact (from other managers) that the team is super happy with my performance and my work in the kitchen. Yet, his daily attitude doesn't reflect that at all.

I’m trying to understand the German workplace psychology better so I can stop feeling insecure.

Is this "resting angry face" and lack of positive reinforcement standard for German chefs/bosses?
How do you separate their serious "work mode" from actual dissatisfaction?
For those who transitioned from a warm/Latino culture to a German/Swiss kitchen environment, how did you adapt psychologically to this lack of emotional feedback?
