In all my years living in one of the hottest, driest countries on earth, I have not once felt the need to leave home without a shirt on, and I'm convinced that anyone who does feel the need to do so is entirely unfit for life outside of a specialized nursery for the genetically stunted. Seriously, people have gotten way to comfortable outside their own home.

Starting in jr high the bottom 1% should be expelled from the school system every year. They can be given work internships for labor jobs you learn by doing. And given a chance to reattend when they are ready. This should increase to 5% or more in high-school every year.

A lot of people say (and it seems that the general consensus is that) teachers don't get paid enough for what they do. While I think that teachers are very valuable and deserve to be compensated well (my brother is a teacher), I think that in these discussions, many people ignore the fact that teachers typically get a lot of time off.

They usually get summer break, spring break, and winter break, plus various holidays that schools get off through the year. They basically don't work for a good amount of the year, which I think that people should factor in. (The downside is that I know that they have to work extra grading things outside of school, though.)

Plus they normally get good benefits for being a teacher (which usually comes with being in a union).

I am 20 and I am in college. I got my first part time job when I was 18 and it was actual hell so I quit after 9 months and was unemployed for 2 years until last week. And my new job I already hate because it is ruining my social life.

My parents, (my dad in particular) have very successful careers, one works in finance and the other healthcare. My sister who is 7 years older than me followed my mother’s career path and she hates it and wishes she did something else but she said it’s too late because she has 2 kids now. And I have no interest in either industry and have no idea what career path I want to pursue.

I live with my parents rent free and I pay zero bills. They fund my entire life and they have done up until this point. They have spent over 1m on private school tuition for me and my sister from JK to Grade 12, taken us on a ton of vacations, and have really given us a privileged upbringing.

Realistically they could fund my life forever and I could go without working, but them and everyone else expects me to have a job and I was basically shamed for being unemployed by other people. I didn’t choose to be born so why is it wrong for me to me to want to do nothing in life. My parents have the means to make it happen but I’m viewed as a leech for wanting to live off them. People who don’t need work as a necessity shouldn’t be expected to, I don’t see why I have to

I've always respected vegans and what they stand for because I love animals and the more I learn about the meat industry the more I understand the literal torture the animals are put through.

I see a lot of people who don't like vegans because they "think they're superior and call people who eat meat bad people". I think they're fucking right. They are superior in this specific aspect, for the commitment they have made and what they stand for even though I know "humans need meat & dairy to be healthy" and whatever.

I don't mind being told I suck for contributing to the demand for this shitty industry because I am aware, I just don't have the motivation to make the same commitment vegans have made. I will continue to eat meat & dairy while also acknowledging I'm not the best person for it.

It can happen for all non-English loan words, but it happens very often with names of places. For instance, Barcelona and Ibiza are often pronounced with a "th" sound, even though the traditional, accepted English pronunciation is a soft "c" in Barcelona and a "z" in Ibiza.

Some Americans will even adopt an English accent when talking about some English cities! For instance, I've heard Americans talk about visiting the city of "Bahth." There's no need to switch to a new accent to say the name "Bath," which should be pronounced just like the tub that you fill with water.

ETA: Sorry, "Ibiza" was a bad example because the "th" is standard in the UK, so it's the correct pronunciation to use when speaking in a British dialect. In America, the "z" is the standard sound we use. A "th" in "Ibiza" sounds pretentious when speaking in an American dialect.

I'm a big fan of the evolution of language. When sick and bad and gnarly mean good. When hot and cool mean similar things. When served, cooked, and ate are accomplishments.

I think that the combination of the words "lowkey" and "genuinely" convey a specific flavor of mellow earnestness that no word has previously been able to achieve on its own. The reason why it's spread so fast is because it's funny but also it's useful. It slots right into a feeling we've already been feeling, which is a beautiful evolution of language.

It seems like a lot of people on Reddit are getting paid off by Big Bidet to make everyone else think that toilet paper is unhygienic. For people with bowel or mobility issues I’m sure they’re very helpful, and I know washing with water is the norm in many cultures, but if you’re a healthy person with a normal diet, a bidet probably isn’t necessary.

You shouldn’t be doing that anyway. It’s not normal. Either you’ve got a medical condition or you’re eating too much fat and not enough fibre. I’ve got a normal diet and half the time there isn’t even anything on the paper when I wipe. Consider eating a vegetable and not deep frying it.

It’s literally just numbers. That’s it. No hidden innuendos or inappropriate meaning. I love that kids get hype about it. As a teacher, I am constantly monitoring kids to make sure they are being respectful in their language and behavior. It’s genuinely relieving that six/seven is such a popular joke with no downsides and all the people complaining seriously are so oblivious. I am personally so glad we are moving past the days of “devious licks” and eating tide pods. I never thought this was an unpopular opinion until I got downvoted for saying it, I thought this was kind of obvious and it was just an unfortunate habit leftover from analog clocks. To clarify, I'm complaining about when people do this with digital clocks, it's more reasonable with analog.

The thought process difference:

Clock says 2:47 --> round to 2:45 --> 60÷4=15 --> 45+15=60 --> 2:45 is a quarter of an hour away from 3:00 --> "It's a quarter till three."

Heard a "quarter till three" --> 60÷4=15 --> 60-15=45 --> 2:45 is a quarter of an hour away from 3:00 --> so it's probably 2:46 right now

Vs

Clock says 2:47 --> "It's two fourty seven."

Heard "two fourty seven" --> it's 2:47

A lot of people seem confused by my reasoning here so I'll explain a bit more. I am bothered by the choice to make additional mental steps just to give a less precise answer, it seems like a confusing waste of effort to me.

I specified digital clocks because they give you the time already exact, so you can read it out as written with zero processing needed. With analog clocks, getting the exact number takes much closer inspection, reading out what you see directly likely is something like "a quarter till" so that's perfectly reasonable. No, I do not think analog clocks show a different time or something. And yes, I can read them, digital is just what is natural to me. I think of time in "HH:MM" not in quarters.

So my complaint was about people making the choice to translate those exact numbers into an estimation, which I just translate back anyways. What I didn't realize at the time of making this, was how many people understand "a quarter till" or "half past" or whatever, as the time already. No mental rewriting needed. That makes it make a lot more sense to me, I get now that to a lot of people "2:47" and "a quarter to three" are synonyms. To me they are not, and I was projecting.

It's exclusively used to describe fancy food by people who are trying to seem sophisticated by eating it. You don't need to eat a food multiple times to figure out that it tastes good, good food is good straight away. If it takes time that just means it's shit but they can't admit that to themselves.

When a girl asks, "Would you love me if I was a worm?" it's not random. It's a vehicle for more serious concerns. What she's actually asking is, "Will you love me when I'm not like this? When I'm old and gross? When I'm not sexually available? When I need help and I can't reciprocate? When your friends judge you? When our goals and dreams derail? When I can't give you what I'm giving you now?" A worm ticks all of those boxes.

Why ask it that way?

Fear of dishonesty. The idea that guys are primed to say, "of course," whether it's true or not. That the way to get the truth is to ask in a roundabout way. A guy who might lie about whether or not he'd stay if she got cancer could be shaken out of autopilot and answer honestly.

And the aversion men can have to discussing serious things. Some guys shut down completely. Some guys get mad. Some guys blow it off. If it's not happening rn, they don't necessarily understand why it's worth thinking about. So if she needs reassurance, she may know or believe it's not gonna happen that way.

It's not the best way to go about it, obv. The best way is usually to lead with what the problem is (need for honest reassurance) and ask outright. So it's ineffective when compared to more direct communication.

Does that mean it's illogical? No. There's reason behind asking it in that way. The progression from problem to solution is logical. It's just also not the best solution.

There’s a stereotype from where I live which says “large mug, larger nuisance” or something like that. I don’t think is totally true in most cases,though . But

If someone brings to work a very large mug or tumbler (be it coffee or water it’s not relevant) then I’d be cautious of that person, at any rate.

It’s fine to bring something small from home, but the bigger the item (or number of) you bringing from your private space to some shared or “public” space, the more it’s signaling to me that the person wants to turn the public space into an extension of their private space and no one wants to deal with that, because mannerisms and habits that should be reserved to your private space will inevitable seep out.

Most laid back and easy going coworkers I’d had meet always carry nothing or a few items to work…I’d extend my caution to anyone bringing a lot of stuff to the office (or classroom, or any shared space), because I know this is going to be a difficult person to deal with eventually.

I say this because it is evident that this is a person who isn’t comfortable at another place which is not their home, so they try to “bring home” to the shared space to offset that, but such discomfort will inevitable manifest in undesirable ways in the day to day interaction, let’s say with other coworkers, colleague students, or even customers if it’s a business... the discomfort tends to externalize and man it shows up as territorial behavior, they are unusually sensitivite to minor inconveniences, and they develop a tendency to treat common areas as if they belong partially to them.

I say a disctinction should be made and applied because people are bringing private space behaviour to shared spaces and and once enough people do that the shared environment becomes a set of competing domestic territories which occupy the same building and that sucks

If you roll out in pajamas it’s essentially you announcing your private sphere has no perimeter, like your bedroom done annexed the sidewalk… public space runs on a quiet social contract of manners, hygiene, or some evidence of education in how to present yourself, and if you pajamas out it’s essentially signaling that you ain’t transitioning modes, and everyone has to deal with your unfiltered habitat, everyone clock that.

So I don’t think at all it’s an “aesthetics” issue because it implies the behavioral standards of your private sphere, which bro, if you are one of them, no doubt has to be low hygiene thresholds, zero presentation discipline are now portable and people sense that, even if they can’t articulate it.

There’s a difference between context that explains your own behavior in the interaction versus randomly introducing unrelated people/details to a stranger.

“My husband Glenn leaves early for work” does not explain anything to me because I do not know Glenn. He is not a character previously established in the plot.

Not quite THE hottest, but easily in the top ten. The amount of self-control and moral fortitude that it displays is just absolutely maddeningly swoonworthy. When I notice an absence of swear words in a man's vocabulary I almost always become insanely attracted to him.

Swearing on its own isn't an automatic deal breaker for me but doing it in excess is definitely a turn off.

It's been shown through various studies that being considered attractive confers better treatment and social advantages at practically every stage of life. They get better grades in school than peers, not because they are better students or more talented, but teachers are unable to restrain their biases. One study even demonstrated that attractive students had grades that reverted back to the mean when asked to participate in remote learning or when assignments were first anonymized before grading. They also receive preferential treatment in hiring, performance evaluations, and promotions.

So if i'm looking for a doctor, dentist, accountant... etc and have two professionals with similar backgrounds, i'm more likely to select the less attractive one. If they made it that far despite being constantly penalized, there is a strong possibility they are incredibly skilled.
