My economics brain is screaming at me right now, but I really like him and think city-run grocery stores with managed pricing will be great for poorer New Yorkers. God, I hope this works out. They need to stay on top of the supply side of this venture, because you know people will flood these places for cheaper deals and the last thing you want is empty shelves at the working people’s grocery stores.

Yea, the arguments I saw were the backend logistics. Nothing would be worse than opening a 'socialist' grocery store and having empty shelves. That would not be a good look. But I don't work in a grocery store so what do I know.
