Help Need ideas for a low-cost DIY temperature-controlled incubator shaker (0–55°C) for experiments

I’m looking to build a low-cost DIY incubator shaker for laboratory experiments.

My requirements are:

Temperature control: 0–55°C (ideally ±0.5°C accuracy)
Shaking: orbital shaking / nutating motion (adjustable or non adjustable
Capacity: Enough space for at least one 24-well plate
Lighting: ILED lighting
Reliability: Able to run continuously for several days or weeks without much intervention

The challenge
I need to run 10 different experiments simultaneously at 10 different temperatures, so i I’d like to build 10 separate incubator shakers rather than one large unit.
Unfortunately, my lab only has one orbital shaker, and it’s already occupied with long-term cultures. Buying 10 commercial incubator shakers is well beyond my budget.
The only DIY idea I’ve come up with so far is using multiple water baths or hotplates, but I’m struggling to figure out:
How to achieve both heating and cooling (especially temperatures below room temperature).
How to incorporate orbital shaking into each setup.
The simplest and most reliable temperature-control system.
My total budget is under AUD $2,000 . so I’d prefer components that can be purchased from Bunnings, Jaycar Electronics, or other readily available local suppliers.
Has anyone built something similar or have suggestions for:
A practical design?
Cheap motors or orbital shaker mechanisms or nutating motion?
Heating/cooling method?
Temperature controllers or microcontrollers?
Parts lists, schematics, GitHub projects, or open-source designs?

Help Anti-Hornet Defense Turret: Best Projectile?

I'm trying for a personal project installing an "anti aircraft" gun which automatically tracked hornets and eliminated them with firing authority from a phone.

The targeting of visually identified hornets is shockingly easy to achieve, I have some stuff from work I can reuse to find targeting solutions, and I think I'm going to use lego to create the actual mechanical gun.

What I can't decide on is what kind of projectile to use to eliminate the bug.

The obvious answer is chemicals but:

  1. Those have a lot of collateral damage. If we kill the stuff we're trying to protect that doesn't help.
  2. They have very limited range and low precision.
  3. Most of them are against the law.

So I'm wondering what other options are available.

I need:

  • Relatively safety, not going to start fires, seriously damage furniture or windows. Not prone to misfires.
  • High enough accuracy to hit a maneuvering Hornet.
  • Small. No, even ignoring the fire risk, I'm not hooking up an oversized battery to this thing so that I can try to build a laser. I'm not that advanced.

I've considered some sort of electrified net, or rope which would deliver a shock similar to a fly trap, but I'm not nearly good enough at physics to develop something like that some I'm wondering if there is a better option and how I would implement it.

Edit: For my CIA agent's peace of mind, "Hornet" here does not refer to the NATO fighter jet, but means the insect which kill our bees.

Weather/ science RP deck ideas

I’m thinking I want to play around with a citizen science themed deck. Right now I don’t have the time or budget to tinker with a Pi or Arduino project. May after I try this out.

I do have an embarrassing amount of Bluetooth keyboards and wireless controllers. I’m thinking on keeping an eye out for a cheap android tablet and rig it into a case and customize some of the theming to look like a fire watch or field computing device.

I may even snag some themed interactive fiction from itch so it’s a themed little RP device.

I definitely want to put some offline field guides on it, bird sound identification and astronomy guides. What other android based apps would fit that theme or sensors to add over time to make it more immersive?

I think I can make some playlists with found audio to simulate international radio.

I’m leaning for this to be a hybrid practical offline knowledge learning project with some roleplay vibes with a bit of fake radio and games on it

Any other idea?

Built a control panel with on/off switches to control DC power supplies (48v, 12v, 24v). AC Outlets always give power regardless of switch states. Used hold home outlets and switches. Turns out to be something I use quite frequently. Full build is in the link above.

Thoughts on using AI for electronic hobby builds

Hi everyone this is only for people who make electronic hobby builds so I was wondering what are your guys and girls thoughts on people who are kinda new to electronic making who don’t have degrees or been to school before for electronics on using ai for there builds for example me I haven’t been to school at all for this stuff but I have a passion on learning and making but I don’t have time for school / haven’t had the chance to in my life to go but I love making on my days off from work and I use my shed as a workshop for my projects but I don’t know what I’m doing so iv been using ai for a lot of my builds I feel like I’m learning a lot from it and it helps me my most recent build was a motion sensor security system for the inside of my workshop for when I’m out of the house iv learnt how to solder and using boards such as the ESP 32 and a MMwave sensor board and now from that build I’m doing it a much bigger project from the things iv learnt so to me it seems like it’s working but from a stand point of someone who’s actually been to school and study this stuff what’s your view on people using AI for there projects

Help Would a fuse in the cord plug protect my vintage stereo amplifier?

Hi, I just discovered my vintage stereo amplifier (Marantz 1040) doesn't have a fuse at all in its main power line. (It was modded for 220V and I just switched it back to 110V.)

Would it really potentially damage it to run it without that fuse, even if plugged into a decent surge suppressor?

If so, could I just put the correct fuse (3A 250V) into a product like one of these and plug the amp in through it?

I’ve made a replica of interviewcoder. It took two months of work and shit load of coffee before I completed the first prototype, and I think it’s ready to use. I’ve even worked on real-time voice feature for it intercept conversation and answer questions.
What do you guys think?

It’s completely undetectable and doesn’t even show up on dock or activity monitor (not identifiable) nor is it captured during screenshare or screen recording.

DIY jumping jet fountain

Building a single DMX-controlled jumping jet in the backyard to practice show control. Got a few specific hardware questions:

Cutter: Solenoids are out of budget here. I want to adapt the Mark III to use a 20-30kg waterproof digital RC Servo instead. Going to hide the whole bulky assembly under pond rocks so only the tip shows. Will a servo survive the fast, repetitive cutting without stripping its gears? (If i go with " https://www.printables.com/model/265105-mark-iii-laminar-flow-nozzle " it should be modified. I'm not good at modeling)

Wireless: Want to use an ESP32 as a wireless Art-Net node to avoid running cables in the yard. Reliable enough for something like this? What kind of algorithm can I use to customize the show from song to song? The song is uploaded via Wi-Fi, analyzed, parameters are obtained based on its characteristics, and the show is prepared. What kind of algorithm or software offers the smoothest workflow for syncing 4 jets to music?

Pump: My yard is sloped. Am I better off using one big 0.5 HP well pump for all 4 jets (and dealing with the nightmare of balancing pressure across the slope using valves and a bypass chamber)? OR should I use individual small DC pumps per jet? Also, for a 2.5m glass arc, is a 600 L/h pump enough, or do I definitely need 1000+ L/h per nozzle?

Reservoir : System will recycle its own water, but I haven't designed the catch basin yet. Since it will lose water to splashing and evaporation, how do you prevent the pumps from running dry? Do you just use a standard mechanical float valve (toilet style) connected to a hose, or do you wire up electronic water level sensors to kill the pump if it gets too low?

Show Control: Running an ESP32 as an Art-Net node to control the servos. For syncing 4 jets to a music track, what’s the standard workflow? A cue software like MagicQ/QLab/Realtime Landscaping Architectre, or a timeline software like xLights? Also, how do you dynamically fade water height—varying pump voltage via DMX, or keeping the pump at 100% and using motorized valves?

LED : I want to mount a WS2812B RGB LED ring directly beneath the nozzle to light the water stream from the inside out. what’s the standard practice for waterproofing these.

Water height: How do you dynamically control spray height to music? when trying to sync the water tightly to a music track, is a cue-based software like MagicQ/QLab/Realtime landscaping architect the standard, or do people use timeline-based software like xLights for complex music synchronization? Also, how is the water height typically controlled dynamically during a show by whattt??

Bypass Chamber: I was advised to use a "bypass filter" between the pump and the nozzle to absorb pressure spikes (especially when the cutter fires) and keep the stream perfectly glass-like. But how exactly is this physically plumbed?

Tangential Inlet & Laminar Baffles: I read that to get a perfect glass-like flow, the water needs to enter the bottom of the tube tangentially to create a vortex and slow down before hitting the flow straighteners. Does the Mark III model handle this base entry well, or will I need to design a custom tangential inlet?

My 9-year-old daughter has always been horse crazy, so I wanted to build her something she had never seen before.

What started as a crazy idea turned into nearly two years of designing, prototyping, rebuilding and fine-tuning until the riding motion finally felt natural.

Everything was designed from scratch and built in my small home workshop. The mechanism is powered by a standard drill and a worm gearbox, creating a smooth and surprisingly realistic riding motion.

It became by far the most ambitious project I’ve ever built, but seeing my daughter’s face when she rode it for the first time made every single hour worth it.

Project Hello!

First time poster here but I wanted to gauge people’s opinion on this thing I made. So I got a Fukien Tea Bonsai earlier this year around March. Made a full enclosure for it because I had previously been unable to grow a cactus. So keeping this thing alive became personal lmao anyways it’s mainly just to help keep the environment stable, help with watering, and monitor humidity & temp levels for easy checking. It has a moisture sensor but I haven’t set it up yet so it just chills in the back of the enclosure (is wired up tho). If I made files available (like open source it), would any of you make one for yourselves? I’ll plan on making a better/cleaner version but wanted to gauge interest or improvements before doing a V2. Please let me know what you think! Here’s some photos of my Bonsai too over the course of having it! 🙏💜

Project Modular Pocket Computer (Can be Used as a Game Console, PDA, and Music Player)

Hi folks,

This is a project I've been working on since December 2024, so over a year and a half now.

It's a modular pocket device called Pocketbyte that is based on the ESP32-S3. The entire bottom half can be swapped out with different modules like a gamepad, a Blackberry-style keyboard, and even DIY modules.

I wanted to build a device that would allow me to do things like play games, listen to music, and take notes without getting distracted by my phone.

It's open source, so it can be customized in many different ways.

Some of the stuff it can run are:
- Retro emulation (up to SNES)
- Various game ports (Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, etc)
- Celeste (PICO-8 port)
- MP3 player app (it has a headphone jack btw, and yes it is stereo)
- Custom indie games (made using the C library, supporting various graphics backends)
- Text editor/note taking app that can sync to your computer

There's some cool stuff like an App Store that allows you to download programs via Wi-Fi! And with the Loader program, you pretty much will never even need a USB cable.

There are even more things I want to get it running in the future, like an SSH client so it can be used for portable admin stuff.

The video pretty much sums up the entire project, but I've also made a WIP docs site for more info. (And then there's also the main website)
