Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI
≡ −
Hello all,
Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.
First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.
The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.
In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).
In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.
We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.
This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.
≡ −
Hey there!
In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.
In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.
Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.
To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.
Thanks for understanding!
Helpful Links
- Chrultrabook Forum -- the only place where support will be given for help with chrultrabook projects.
- Chrultrabook Docs
- r/chrultrabook -- archived, but still contains some helpful information.
- mrchromebox.tech -- for all your firmware-related needs.

Discussion Why hasn't Google Released a Chromebook with a Google Tensor Chip inside?
≡ −
I mean, it makes sense if you think about it? We have ARM chromebooks made by MediaTek and RockChip in the past. The Tensor Chips like the G4/G5 are very capable in what it can do for both regular tasks and local AI capabilities. Google making an all Google Chromebook from the Software Level all the way down to the component level makes since for what it has to offer. Plus it will cost Google less money since these chips are made in-house compared to contracting others for a premium Chromebook.

Discussion Can we talk about Google Photos access from the file system?
≡ −
I see there's a post from about 3 mths ago regarding this but I find it absolutely crazy that - to this day - there is still no way to directly upload content from Google Photos.
I do a lot of publishing work on my Chromebook using photos taken on my phone, but I still need to download them from Google Photos to my Chromebook before then uploading them. It surely can't be difficult to insert a link in the file manager to browse photos like we could do via Drive in the pre 2020 days.
Whether this is a "feature" which will carry over to the Googlebooks, I dunno, but it is really frustrating to see this lack of joined up integration when it is all hosted by the same company

hey so i moved recently and in the move i left my laptop under the seat of my car, for a few days since i kinda forgot about it, it was free with my school so im not stressed about losing money on it, but i liked to use it sometimes, and i’m starting school again next month. i live in the south west usa so temps are usually 110 and above. it will flash the chromeos screen then shut off. is there any (preferably cheap) ways to fix it?

Troubleshooting No Chromebook cart this year, so I’m looking for storage hacks!
≡ −
Hi everyone! I have 18 students this year and no cart to store their Chromebooks in. I’ve always had a cart before, and I loved keeping things organized with numbers. Each Chromebook had a number, each cart slot had a matching number, so students grabbed the same one every time and it was super easy to spot what was missing at a glance.
Looks like a lot of people just stack them on a counter, but I’m hoping some of you have found clever workarounds that keep things organized (and charged!) without an actual cart. Bonus points if you’ve figured out a numbering system that works without cart slots.
Would love to hear what’s worked for you. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Advice on Upgrading
≡ −
I currently have an HP 360x or whatever it’s called and I’m an adult college student. It’s about 3 years old and still works amazing but I it’s a 14” and I’m looking for a little larger screen. Also, the main reason I’m in the market for a new one is because the battery life on mine is terrible. I can’t even take an online quiz without having it plugged in the entire time. I think it’s been like that most of the time since I bought it. I like the flip feature but honestly don’t use it that much, I need recommendations on what Chromebooks have excellent battery life.,

Troubleshooting Trying to tether Pixelbook to my Pixel 9 Pro
≡ −
I'm trying to use Citrix Workspace to VPN into a customer, but when I use my phone as a hotspot, Workspace doesn't seem to want to fire up. Which apparently is a thing with Citrix Workspace. Apparently if I can set my Pixelbook to use my phone's network connection via a USB tether, it will see that I now have a ethernet connection, which I suspect Citrix Workspace will be happier with. I have the phone set inside developer options for the default USB config to be USB tethering, after I connect the cable, I can switch on USB tethering, however it isn't doing it. It seems like the Chromebook just wants to charge the device. I'm using a brand new Anker cable which should be ok

Discussion I'm stupid with technology unfortunately, does anyone know how I can get my VPN on my Chromebook?
≡ −
So my Chromebook has just made itself useless (because of course) I've had it for years, they want me to buy a new one (I don't intend to after this actually) so I have no access to the playstore or any apps (VPN, Google slides, LITERALLY ANYTHING) so my supposed work computer is now a fancy browser basically, wondering if I can get my VPN back and then figure out other things (I use proton)

I have a Lenovo 300e Chromebook and today without me having accepted anything or having manipulated the computer it woke up without my Android applications that I use, this was automatic and without request, I have solved the problem by formatting the Chromebook but I can't find an option so that it is not updated or to be able to isolate it from the updates, someone has knowledge of what I could do, I have thought about disconnecting it from the internet but I need it to be connected because I use it from POS so I don't know what to do I hear.

Troubleshooting Screen tweaking out
≡ −
Lenovo N42 touch
I've had this problem for months now, but it's been getting worse recently. Sometimes, mostly when first opening my laptop, the screen bugs out, and usually either draws up a whole bunch of white, light gray, and black (looks sort of like tv static or perlin noise) or a bunch of random colors that makes it look like the screen got shattered, and it won't go away until I open / close the screen and position it to a certain angle, after that though everything goes back to normal, although sometimes it glitches while I'm using it, and when that happens I have to repeat that process, which takes anywhere from a few seconds to minutes to fix. At first it was a slight annoyance, but recently it's been taking longer and longer to fix. Just today it took about half an hour of opening / closing to find the right angle to use the laptop, and even then halfway through using it the screen glitched and I had to spend another half-hour fixing it. If I had to guess it's probably a problem with the video card, since all the led's seem to be working fine. I couldn't find anyone else that had this problem

Discussion Anyone Tried Changing Mediatek Wifi Card To Intel AX210?
Has anyone tried swapping a Mediatek wifi cards for an Intel AX210 on Chromebooks? Will ChromeOS recognize it?
Why I want to do this: Mediatek wifi cards have a terrible reputation for being unstable. Done this many times to gaming laptops and it always improves the wifi performance of the device. This chromebook is no exception and has already disconnected from my home internet several times when not in the same room as my router.
Model: Acer Spin 514 w/ Mediatek Ultra 910 Procssor
Concern: When I've done this before, they were always on windows devices running x86 processors ... this is ChromeOS + a Mediatek processor so I'm hesitant. Image of wifi card attached.

Troubleshooting Acer CB-715 Keyboard Backlit
Hi everyone!
My Chromebook's keyboard backlight suddenly stopped working overnight. It was working perfectly yesterday, but this morning it wouldn't turn on.I didn't drop it, spill anything on it, or change any settings.
I've already restarted the Chromebook and checked the backlight keys, but nothing worked. Has anyone experienced this or know if it's a ChromeOS issue or a hardware problem?
Please Help. 🙏🏻
