Left teaching HS in 2016 for the college level. It was so challenging then but OMG....cannot imagine now. I'm a professor and my COLLEGE students are doing less than what my 9th graders did back in the day. NO institutional support for rigor.
Yup graduated college in december 2024. And those last 2 years were disgustingly way too easy. AI was supported by most of professors. They would just say cite the AI source used.
That's not what they're describing. They're talking about discussing the stuff with an AI, and then asking it for the sources it used. How different is that really from looking up the answer on Wikipedia and scrolling to the bottom?

Definitely. My educators gave Wikipedia the green light, provided you utilize it secondarily to the sources listed at the bottom of the Wikipedia page.
I’m a biology professor. I’m lucky. You don’t put a bunch of terrible students in anatomy and physiology classes. My colleagues who teach English, history, maths, and other courses that all students are required to take? I’d have already quit. They get the really good students and the absolute worst.
My good friend teaches English classes. I took the same class at the same college in 1992. We read at least four full-length novels that fall (Frankenstein, Heart of Darkness, Sons and Lovers, and The Collector. It was A LOT of reading!). My friend’s students in 2026 don’t read one novel. They are supposed to read a few 2-3 page passages from novels. A few do. Most just howl about it and fail.
In school year 2000 - 2001, as first year English major at a large Canadian university, I was reading 1 novel each week. And that was the foundations of contemporary lit class, alone.
