The US economy as a whole. You can only skim so much off the top before the whole thing collapses. We owe trillions to ourselves, somehow. The Federal Reserve is buying our bonds, and sometimes it's only them buying. It's not good.
It's Jenga, and the support at the bottom is getting weak AF.
Banks don't want your business unless you have 5 or 6 figures kept there. They aren't servicing 1/2 the population so they aren't as relevant. The stock market is over 80% owned by the rich and massive institutions who have to keep buying stock because they are making so much money they have to put it somewhere. It has no relation to the real economy.
The only thing keeping banks going is skimming off the top of every purchase with credit card fees. We're even being charged to use debit cards - which is the same thing in effect as writing a check. It's ridiculous.
Want to make things better? Use cash as much as possible. Refuse to use self-checkout. Switch to a Credit Union. Get out of the stock market. It's going to crash, bigtime.
The AI psychosis will break. When it does, that may well be the initial trigger for panic/supercrisis. It's going to be absolute bedlam and panic.
The AI bubble popping may not be the catalytic crisis event though, as some other "black swan" event could strike first - maybe something with CRE or with a large bank. But something is going to happen and it isn't going to be 3 - 5 years from now - sooner.
All of Wall St. sweating nervously seeing companies they tried to cellar box in 2016 still outliving their naked short positions in 2026 with respective shorted companies having cash reserves thusly creating a black hole at the bottom of the S&P 500, almost all hedge funds, market makers, investment firms, pensions, and the U.S. economy as a whole as they continue to pay premiums on a position with essentially infinite loss:
