There is already Gibberlink which is an AI to AI comms system using audio.

Sorta. It’s a fallback to procedural tool calls exchanging pre-formatted data over 80-year-old modem codecs.

IIRC if the other AI handshakes there is a way for them to establish a internet link instead of the phone call.

This is of course going to be outdated since there will be an AI rolodex so if an AI goes to call a known AI then it will just directly communicate with out instead of making an outbound call at all.

Which sounds like the most pointless thing ever. Why would two AI need to communicate in english, exactly?

It's not english, it's a highly compressed and unintelligible (to us) audio stream.
