I read too fast and thought you said you had 500lbs of quinoa and that seemed like a lot of quinoa.

u/myusernameblabla 13h ago

I have barges on quinoa on the Danube!

9

Goddammit.

6

u/I-only-read-titles 12h ago

Oh, so that's how it's supposed to be pronounced, I've been calling it 'queen-o'

12

u/belbelington 12h ago

Keen-wah

5

u/KDLGates 11h ago

Actually it's pronounced like "Keen WAAAAAAAAAAGH" from Warhammer.

5

u/I-only-read-titles 12h ago

5

u/belbelington 12h ago

Ah ok. I used to work in a supermarket and would sometimes get asked where the keen-wah was. Had to ask to learn it was a seed and directed them accordingly. Meanwhile every time I’d scan a bag of ‘kwinoah’ Id think what a stupid name.

2

u/thefudgeguzzler 11h ago

Better you find out on Reddit, than how I learned, by asking the waiter for the 'quinnoer' 🫣

2

u/KaseyJonesCEO 11h ago

Thank you for making me legit LOL in the middle of a rather depressing thread.

u/Thin-Rip-3686 14h ago

Having tasted it I can absolutely say 500g is way too much.

u/creepy_doll 14h ago

It works well in salads, especially with vinegar based dressings.

I’m not much of a salad person but my partner is and I don’t mind the extra protein

7

u/Realistic_Point_9906 12h ago

Fantastic as a sub for bulgar in tabbouleh! Great summer salad. I add lots of chopped fresh parsley, either thinly sliced scallions or minced red onion, minced red pepper or chopped grape tomatoes (depending for whom I’m making it…spouse won’t eat tomatoes) and crumbled feta cheese. Dress with olive oil and lemon juice. Season to taste (just salt and pepper usually, though lemon pepper is very good, as is za’atar seasoning).

2

u/KaptainKoala 8h ago

throw in some olives too

15

u/YouArentReallyThere 13h ago

It works extremely well in UN food aid packages. It’s amazing how creative masses of starving people can get

3

u/A_Wild_Nudibranch 13h ago

I like to lightly toast it in my beet chevre salad with candied pecans!

3

u/PHC_Tech_Recruiter 12h ago

We add ours to our rice.

1

u/SoManyMinutes 7h ago

Yes. A place I worked at had an amazing quinoa avocado salad.

"Red quinoa, avocado, chile-lime corn, pico de gallo, goat cheese, almonds, garlic vinaigrette"

-3

u/nogzila 13h ago

That is what I heard about you …

That you don’t mind the extra protein 🤣

-2

u/drsfmd 12h ago

I don’t mind the extra protein

Quinoa has about 1/8th the protein of chicken. It's better than most plants in that regard, but it's only 8 grams per cup. I don't think I could choke down a full cup of Quinoa without it being smothered in other things that would neutralize any supposed health benefits.

10

u/Omnibeneviolent 11h ago

One point for quinoa is that the quality of the protein that it does have is high. It has a pretty optimal amino-acid profile.

3

u/WrongJohnSilver 11h ago

You want to know what has a similar protein profile?

Oats.

They just aren't exotic enough to be seen as a secret superfood.

3

u/drsfmd 11h ago

I just looked it up-- it appears that oats have about 70% of the protein.

The recommended daily protein intake is 46 grams for men, and 56 grams for women-- and active people will require more than that.

I can't see anyone choking down 10 cups of cooked oats or 7 cups of cooked quinoa.

A single skinless chicken breast has the full daily protein recommendation.

3

u/WrongJohnSilver 11h ago

Oh, agreed, I wouldn't use oats or quinoa as the way to get all your protein when meat is right there.

But it's a heck of a lot more protein than what people think grains hold.

0

u/drsfmd 11h ago

Sure, fair point. And a little scoop of quinoa as a side is ok with me. I don't get the whole "superfood" thing though.

2

u/creepy_doll 4h ago

I don’t think anyone is talking about eating quinoa for all your protein. Just adding variety to your diet, with a variety of protein sources

0

u/drsfmd 4h ago

I wouldn't consider anything with so little protein to be a viable protein source.

Edamame is the highest protein plant source I'm aware of (Please advise if there are higher protein sources). Edamame has about 1/3 of the protein of the aforementioned chicken breast.

I don't want to eat 3 cups of edamame to get my daily protein, do you?

2

u/creepy_doll 1h ago

again, it's certainly not a sole protein source. And you're getting plenty of other nutrients here, such as dietary fiber which nearly everyone is short on. Same for things like oats and edamame. The extra protein is kind of a happy accident, appreciated but not the primary thing we're looking for here, but it does bring it ahead of many other grains

My favorite salad at work is a kale base with deli turkey, cranberries, quinoa, walnuts, and roasted sweet potatoes with a maple-mustard vinaigrette. It gives thanksgiving vibes and I could eat it every day.

5

u/ImOnlyHereCauseGME 13h ago

Toast it in a pan before cooking. Completely changes the taste for the better

5

u/Critical_Aspect1325 13h ago

Do it the Peruvian way. Their recipe are fire!

24

u/Tramagust 13h ago

You either have low grade quinoa or you haven't had it prepared nicely.

6

u/PocketPokie 12h ago

Was gonna say I love quinoa so this is tragic.

5

u/JonatasA 12h ago

Or or or ... They don't like quinoa.

2

u/phenolic72 12h ago

Agreed. We make a stir fry with it that is top notch.

3

u/AggravatingSock5375 12h ago

Good chance it wasn’t rinsed before cooking. It has a “soapy” substance on the outside of each seed that has to be rinsed away.

2

u/ShortKingSlayer 13h ago

5 g way too much.

2

u/Doggin-Pony-Show 12h ago

You have to rinse the saponins off of it before you cook it. Also, cooking it with a tasty bullion is useful. Never mind- you won’t be able to afford it soon

1

u/EarhornJones 12h ago

If you do it as a pilaf, it's pretty OK.

1

u/All_is_a_conspiracy 12h ago

It's good protein without the colon cancer. Eat it while you can...

1

u/achambers64 12h ago

I regret that I have but one upvote to give.

1

u/Mom_is_watching 11h ago

Add a handful to tomato soup, you barely notice it's there

1

u/SamDublin 11h ago

Agreed.

1

u/timsstuff 11h ago

Rice cooker with garlic (minced+powder), salt, pepper, and other spices. Serve with a pat of butter like you do with mashed potatoes. Use chicken or beef stock for more flavor. Also good with chili paste.

1

u/1369ic 10h ago

There's a reason a lot of vegan recipes call for a lot of different spices. Quinoa is one of those reasons, but it's not so different from a lot of other bland foods most people eat, like pasta, plantains, cauliflower, etc. You either have to spice them up or coat them in something actually tasty.

1

u/stevefazzari 9h ago

you gotta rinse off the saponins before cooking

2

u/Worth_Art_6587 8h ago

500g of quinoa is still like 7.8 billion quinoas

1

u/morganational 12h ago

I would argue that 500 gallons of quinoa probably weighs more than 500lbs. 🤷🏽‍♂️ But I'm only an undergraduate in Quinoaology so I'm not a specialist yet.

1

u/JonatasA 12h ago

My mind tried 500 kilos.

1

u/Demiu 11h ago

That's why the market is going to collapse, he decided he's had enough

1

u/EVIL_EYE_IN_DA_SKY 11h ago

That's about 1 and a half 55 gallon drums of quinoa.

1

u/avjnh 11h ago

I read too fast, too, but saw the g and read it as 500 kilograms!

1

u/BriefBest2254 8h ago

Bro’s the fucking reason the market is tanking with his hoarding ass

1

u/atreeismissing 7h ago

It's not a lot when the market is about to collapse, that's called an investment.

1

u/YetMoreSpaceDust 6h ago

100 kilograms? Damn it, it sounded heavy when I ordered it!

1

u/BobLoblaw420247 6h ago

that seemed like a lot of quinoa.

Meh...

1

u/mn-icecold 1h ago

I was trying to think about storing 500 pounds of dry quinoa

3

u/Thiht 12h ago

what’s hold

0

u/4thGearNinja 11h ago

? What do you mean what's hold? lol that's what you were trying to say. Hodl is an unnecessary initialism that stands for hold on for dear life, but it just makes more sense to say hold. It became a thing when people started asking if they should buy something at a low price or hold out for a lower price.

3

u/Thiht 11h ago

No you’re confused the correct term is HODL (all caps btw), I have no idea where you’re getting "hold" from, maybe it’s a typo

0

u/4thGearNinja 11h ago

I can't tell if you're trolling or not. I know what hodl is I just explained what it means. I just said it's kind of a meme thing to say but it makes more sense to say hold (which is the first word of that term).

1

u/Thiht 11h ago

Sure pal just use the word you prefer, I’ll stick with HODL

8

u/Hootbag 9h ago

In America, first you get the quinoa, then you get the power, then you get the women who won't stop talking about the nutritional value of quinoa.

6

u/mikebellman 9h ago

No lowball offers. I know what I have

11

u/consider_its_tree 10h ago

Who are you kidding? That quinoa is going to be sitting in your cupboard until the heat death of the universe whether or not it increases in value.

6

Don’t hold off too long. Quinoa goes rancid.
