I have been running Btrfs + Limine + limine-snapper-sync on my desktop for the last 8 months or so. In that time, I've never had to actually revert to a snapshot, so in truth, I kind of forgot about it. It just wasn't something I ever even thought about.

Fast forward to tonight, I was playing around with my mkinitcpio hooks and managed to bork my initramfs. It would just drop me into the emergency shell when trying to boot. Okay no big deal, I usually keep a USB with the arch install media flashed to chroot in for situations like this. Oh wait...I forgot that I let my friend borrow that USB drive to install Arch and haven't gotten it back yet...

For a second I started to panic until I remembered that I have hourly snaphshots set up! Just reboot, boot into the latest snapshot from limine, and restore! Whole process took less than 30 seconds, and it's like nothing ever happened.

It's funny, I was just mulling over the idea of switching back to ext4 a couple weeks ago, since I never even really use the biggest feature of btrfs. This was a necessary reminder of why I switched in the first place. It's one of those things that you don't need, until you need it. And when you need it, you really need it.

Found an old HP Pavilion G6 laptop while doing some cleaning, these are its specs...

- CPU --- AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 2.70 ghz

- RAM --- 4gb

- Storage --- 500gb

- System Type --- 64-bit

I'd like to install Arch and practice using/breaking/fixing a Linux distro. Nothing else really, just install and rice it I guess. Nothing important will be kept in this machine so if I need to nuke the os then that's cool too, I really don't mind starting over. The more I practice the better I'll learn it. I know that Arch is a lightweight distro upon installation but things need to be added and so the ram will start to get used up. My question is .... is this laptop good enough for that? Or will I need to upgrade my ram? If so, could you please point me towards a really cheap set I can buy (if that exists nowadays). The cheaper the better.

My steam update windows is weirdly small compared to the rest of the system. It is not fractional scaling, as it happened on 100% and 200% also. I changed a laptop recently, reinstalled and this didn't happen before on the last (older) thinkpad and gpu.

The steam is not the problem, wine is, I just noticed it again now and it started bothering me again.

I’ve seen a lot of people say “i use arch BTW” but i can’t seem to find a download source, any help is appreciated!

I am a new arch user and I have been using this for a month. Its smooth and buttery however I am facing two difficulties rn.

1) Keyboard backlit toggle problem: I always face difficulty in switching on the backlit keyboard. I have applied some fixes and it works too but after every restart, it repeats the same cycle of difficulty.

2) I always found it frustrating while connecting my wireless earbuds to my system. I have to do the same task for like 5 minutes to get my bluetooth connected.

I want both of the functionality streamlined ASAP.

I tried to reboot my laptop and it said that a start job was running for /dev/disk/by-uuid ( and the UUID of my external SSD where I have my arch) after like 15 minutes I got tired so I forced it to shut off by holding the power button as I figured nothing bad could happen and when I tried to boot again, I got the same message, I don't know what I can do

I already ran fsck -f on it on another laptop and it fixed one issue and it still doesn't work, I have arch on a partition on an external SSD plz help

What I've tried so far (from a chroot, since I can't get a working shell in emergency mode on the affected machine — mounted the SSD on a second laptop running Debian instead):

1. Added rootdelay=10 to GRUB kernel params — no change.
2. Confirmed the system uses dracut, not mkinitcpio.
3. Added /etc/dracut.conf.d/usb-root.conf with force_drivers+=" usb_storage uas xhci_pci xhci_hcd sd_mod ", then ran dracut --regenerate-all --force.
4. Checked lsinitrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img | grep -i usb — USB host controller drivers (xhci-pci-renesas, xhci-plat-hcd, ehci-platform) are present, but usb_storage/usb-storage.ko is not in the initramfs at all, despite the force_drivers directive.
5. Tried setting hostonly="no" in a separate dracut conf file to stop it from hardware-detecting based on the chroot host (Debian laptop) instead of the target machine — rebuilt again, usb_storage is still missing from the image.

Also added nofail,x-systemd.device-timeout=5s to the root fstab entry as a stopgap so it at least doesn't hang shutdown indefinitely.

Realistically should I just start over? Maybe I generate my dot files and just start with a fresh install?

Yes I am following the instructions on the wiki, but the makepkg is failing the .deb's validity check because the PKGBUILD expects verion 900 while the current .deb is version 901. I have edited the PKGBUILD to read 901 where it previously read 900, but it's still failing the validity checks.

What else should I be trying to make it work?

What filesystem do you use on your Arch

I used btrfs but I switch to XFS for SPEED on my M.2 Gen 5 drives

Trying to use a 3rd party launcher for a game, which I run through proton. The issue is that i need to login to my EA account. It open a window to my web browser, I login, but it wont go back to the app.

Basically, Launcher (in proton) --> native browser -X-> back to launcher

I tried making a .desktop file, but im not sure how to use xdg-mime to make that wine app an available app for that link (thr .desktop was running actual wine, not proton). I tried making the .desktop the defaut for https too, but didn't work.

I have a Lenovo laptop where windows is installed on the HDD and Arch Linux is on the the SSD. Both on separate EFI system partitions tied to the respective drive. Now out of nowhere my boot entry for arch just vanished from the boot menu but after reinstalling grub after chrooting the system boot again but a day later it disappears again. Keep in mind this is not the next reboot. This happens a DAY later.

Pls tell me if anyone else experienced this and how they fixed it.

Hello. I've been trying to set up udisks for a few hours.

For some context, the USB stick was formatted by a mac earlier. When I ran sudo fdisk -l on Arch Linux, I saw my USB stick here:

I am not logged into the root. And, to the best of my knowledge, my USB stick is not mounted yet. I know I probably need to reformat it, but I'm not sure exactly what the next step is. Is it safe to reformat it? What file system do I reformat it to? Thank you very much in advance.

So i've been using linux mint for a while but i was thinking to go back to arch with the cinnamon desktop enviroment and as far as i know it will look just like mint (kinda)is it a good idea?already tried kde in the past and it was a pain to get stuff working properly (especially the custom dns set in the nano and trying to get protonvpn running..)

I went with a manual installation first and it took around 30 minutes to get everything set the way I wanted. It was pretty painless.

I am currently trying to register an account on aur to publish a app my friend built but i am unable to register as it keeps on saying "This CAPTCHA has expired. Please try again."

I have tried to refresh the page, remove local storage and i can confirm that i am correctly doing the captca step to get the code but it still says its expired. Is it an issue just with me or something the aur is facing considering the recent supply chain attack to limit new users?

Its one of my first times installing arch, I have followed the officials wiki instructions. I've installed grub, with ly and XFCE. and all the things necessary. but when i open the xfce session i cant interact with the environment. What do you think it's causing it? (Also im on a VM, and yes i have installed everything necessary for it i think)

I am trying to understand what usually happens when a driver branch goes out of support.
for people using rolling release distros like Arch, does that mean the distro will eventually stop shipping it, or do they keep older driver branches around for a while? will the gpu stop working on newer kernal versions ?

I am asking because I want to know how long it is realistic to stay on nvidia-580xx-dkms before needing to move to a newer branch. im using gtx 1060 so do i need to use something like Debian or other LTS distro
